Governor Hastings, In bin Thanks giving proclamation, says: "We huve abundant ami unusual cause for grati tude. No poHtili'iii'ii has Invaded our borders, and peace hns prevailed. God's love has spared our lives, made onr liomos 1iuy. Inoiviisnd our devotion to country nml should inspire a nobler manhood and a grander statehood." "Brother," mild tlio minister, gently, "yon should read your Mblo more br Blduously. Hrolhor Biu'rough your next door neighbor, by 1 no way never lets a day go by without a perusal, at least, of bis copy of the Holy Writ." "Yes, ho may rend his Bible all right," said the dollnuent, "but ho always borrows my home ncwspaer.'' Ex. Dr. Swallow Is at present the Barkis of Pennsylvania polifles. Ho rather likes campaigning. He will take a nomination for the Governorship next year If his friend Insist. The news of his willingness is not received without trepidation by the Republican organs, and we observe a sly endeavor to take the popular imi-son out of State politics by the suggestion that he reserve him' self as the logical Prohibitionist candi' date for the Presidency In 1900. I'hlla dolphla Iirrnrfl. "Christian Science," in so far as Its devotees seek to apply it to tho cum of disease, will soon be tho subject of judi cial consideration. Afetnalopractition- or of tho art of "divine healing" has been arrested In Kansas City for failing to notify tho health authorities or a caso of diphtheria which she bad at tended. The validity of her arrest and any punishment that may be inflicted upon her for failure to observe health regulations or for the practice of tho mummery known as "divine healing" will bo contested by appeal to tho courts of last resort. Tho Christian Scientists of Kansas City are said to number from 1500 to 2000 pel-sons, who will pool their money and interests in defense of their cherished superstition. Philadelphia Iiccnrd Some of the newspapers within the past few months, Including THE Star, liave been advocating cheap excursions on the A. V. R'y, and as a result there wag an extremely cheap excursion run to Pittsburg Sunday. We cannot speak for the other papers, but as for The Star, It was not advocating Sunday excursions, no matter how cheap. Some people take advantage of Sunday excursions for a day of drunkenness, and we understand this was no excep tion, as a number were drunk. A cheap excursion like that last Sunday put a premium on Sunday desecration. If the A. V. R'y Co. would run an occa sional 12.50 or $3.00 week day excursion to Pittsburg, good for two days, then they would not bo offering the people an inducement to take such a trip on Sunday and it would be better appre ciated by the public. Talk Is cheap and no matter how travagabtly it is used, there 1b no pos sible danger of the supply ever being exhausted, but talk alone will never build up a town or community. Of course it is often necessary to do consid erable talking to get the people to a point where they are ready' to do more than talk. Much has been said In the stores and on the streets of Reynolds vllle in the past few months about do ing something that will better the eon dltlonof the town in the future, but so far not a thing has materialized. In stead of waiting on outside capitalists to drop in our midst, why not raise stock companies and start manufactur ing establishments in tbe town? A number of small industries would be no mean thing for Reynoldsytlle. We be lieve a chemical mill would pay big interest on the money invested, and it would give employment to number of men and put considerable money in cir culation in this Immediate vicinity. We have plenty of the necessary wood nearby to feed a chemical mill. There re four or five such mills at Mt. Jewett, Pa., that are doing a good business, Industries will not drop into our lap, we must roll tbem in by special work. Bell can show you ti $8, $0, and 910 suits in the county, chestnuts.
