Ill no country is the business of life
insurance on n sounder or move conser
vative basis than in the United States.
There were some attempts madn in the
early years of tho century to start life
insuraiieo companies, but life instiraneo
wus not popular in those days, it being
regarded by many, as the quaint reiuiuk
of a writer of the period puts it, as
"wicked to insure their lives, or to trav
el in steamboats against wind and tide,
lho threo largest companies ut present
doing business begun in 1841, lH4:i and
isr.it.
Tho remarkable development in the
business began after the civil war, and
it has grown with an unexampled prog
ress. '1 be greut conservative life iustir
anee companies stood tho shock of the
tinaneial convulsions of 1H7!I and lMiij
better Hum oilier tiiiaueiiil institutions,
and the words of the famous matheuia
tieiaii, Do Morgan, still remain true,
"There is nothing in tho commercial
world which approaches, even remote
ly, the security of u well established
life ollleo. " The three largo companies
receive annually in premiums and other
income about $100,000,000, their assets
aggregate about $000,000,000, and they
have outstanding insurance . to the
amount of about $3,400,000,000. The
natural presumption arising from a
study of tho development of such an en
terprise is that to havo maintained its
place in the great Held of competition it
must havo subserved n purpose of greut
benefit to society. Cutholio World.
