, Color Itllnd.
John Pulton, wlthont whose dinoovery
of tlio lnvvs of chmninal combtnntion
chomistry nn no exnot boIpik-o conlil
hnrdly exist, was wholly color blind.
His knowlodRO of the fnot cntne nbont
liy a hnjiponinu; of the iiort which we
cull chance. On hi mother's birthdny,
when he wns a mnn of 20, he took her a
pnir of fttockiuRR which he hnd "ecu In
a shop window labeled :
"Hilk, and newest fashion. "
"Thco hits bought mo a pnir of grnnd
hose, John," snid the mother, "bnt
what, made thee fnnry such a bright col
or? Why, I ran never allow myself at
meeting in them."
John wns much disconcerted, bnt he
told her tlmt ho considered the stockings
to be of a very proper go to meeting
color, ns they were a dnrk bluish drab.
"Why, they're red asa cherry, John,"
wns her astonished reply.
Neither ho nor his brothor Jonathan
could see anything bnt drub in the stock
ings, and they rested in the belief that
the good wifo'g eyes were out of order
until she, having consulted various
neighbors, returned with tho verdict,
"Varra fine stuff, but nnoommon soar
loty." The consequence was that John Dal
ton became almost the first to direct th
attention of tho scientific world to the
subject of color blindness. Youth '

Thin Pklnnt-d OnuigM.
It has often been questioned why
orange growers will graft and plant
varieties with thick skins when the
great public appreciates a thin skinuod
one more highly. Asking a grower, if
not one of the secrets of the orange
growing trado, why this was thus, he
replied that the thin skinned kinds were
rarely ns productive as tho thick skinned
ones that the public would give no
more for a boi of thin skins than for a
box of thick ones and as there was
consequently more profit in growing
orange skins than in growing orange
flesh the skins carried the dny.
Wo have never heard such an expla
nation before, and this mny he only
"chaff." ftill, tho great question re
mains, Why do orungo growers graft
and plant thick skinned sort when the
thin skins are preferable? Meohan'

Ronton'! Pnhlto Library.
In Boston, at lenst, is a public library
where the eye may share its pleasure
with the mind and our popular taste
mny gain tlmt impulse in the right di
rection for which, with us, the opportU'
uity is still far too meager. We have
hnd no Medici to adorn our streets, and
often our public buildings have been tho
deplorable issues of inexperience and
political scheming. Now, for once, wo
have an enduring monument worthy of
our material prosperity and progress.
Turning away, we linger and look baok
at the long inscription of its northern
facade "The Commonwealth Re
quires the Education of the People as
the Safeguard of Order and Liberty"
and we are profoundly grnteful to the
commonwealth which has justified itself
so nobly that all the world may learn
from it a useful lesson. Scribuor s.
Bli Price a DHBonlty.
"Every man has his price," senten
tionsly announced the philosopher of
the all night drug store, where the
street railroad franchise wns being dis
cussed.
"Well," said the wit of the establish
ment, "I wish somebody wonld discov
er my price and offer it to me.
"My boy," solemnly remarked the
perfumery drummer, who had not spo
ken boforo that evening, "there is no
smaller coin made than a cent. "
And for several seconds thore was no
sound heurd save the drip, drip of the
real mineral waters from the hydrant-
