Tho IVick and Southwest Coke com panies of the C'onnellsville region have posted up notices at all their works that an advance of l.'i per cent In wages will go Into effect the first of April. Bion is a brilliant newspaper man and will be a good addition to the already excellent paper, Pittsburg Timm. This Is a peculiar world, remarks an exchange. One Is struggling for just ice, another Is floolng from it. Ono man is saving money to build a houso, and another Is trying to sell his for loss than it cost to build It. Ono man Is spending all ho can make in taking his girl to tho theatre and sending hor flowers, with tho hope of making her his wlfo, while his neighbor is spending what gold ho has In getting a divorce. One man escapes all diseases that flesh is hoir to and gets killed on the rail road. Another escapes with a scratch and dies with the whooping cough. Ono man stands otT all his creditors and goes traveling whllo another pays his debts and btaya at home. Tuoro is a severe law in the state of Pennsylvania against selling cigarettes to unyone under the age of 10 years, and it la safe to assume that parents will not willingly furnish tholr children with cigarettes or give them money to purohase them, but in spite of paternal admonition and state laws many ohil Jlroa are seen puffing the vile stuff that "goes into manufacture of cigarettes. Tho e (Toots are deadly. The poison, in sidious and apparently almost harmless at first, gets into the system, and once there it Is as hard to uproot as the Can ada thistle Is from land. Tbe taste for the cigarette once acquired may be broken, but it takes more effort than most cigarette fiends can make, for one of the chief attributes of the little pest Is that it seems to so sap the vitality as to leave its victim helpless to resist. When one looks at it from the right stand point the tax of one mill on building and loan associations, as is proposed by a bill now in the State Legislature, is an imposition. Through the many build ing and loan associations throughout the statu, Pennsylvania takes the load in thu prosperity of the working clossos. Many homes are built at the cost of what the house would rent for and if this additional burden were put on the associations it would oome off the stock holders, the majority of whom are mem bers of the associations because through the association they expect to ultimate ly own a home. These associations en courage home building, encourage economy and Industry, and better citi zens is the result. Therefore the State should onoourago aud foster such socle ties. The borrower in these associations pay a real estate tax and he should not be asked to pay another tax. There are 12.10 associations In the state, with as sets of nearly (104,000,000. Tbe gains to shareholders are $17,000,000. The total expense of carrying on the business of last year was $381,000, or three oenta a day to tbe four hundred directors doing their business. There are 284,000 mem bers and 1U.700 homes have boon built by aid of these associations. Puuxsu tawney jVtitrn. Scraps of Philosophy, Don't hire a lawyer to help you quarrel.
