Pennsylvania legislature changing the
date of Labor day from the first Satur
day in Septenilx-r to the first Monday

Adams, Somerset, Blair, Cambria, Hun
tingdon, Union, Lebanon, Perry, Juni

penitentiary Is to be located at or near
Harrisburg. The bill provides for the
appointment by the governor of a com
mission to select the site and appropri
ates $100,000 for the purchase of tho

Senator McQuown, of the Clearfiold
BiftsmaH''s Journal, has Introduced a
bill to put a stop to the frequent chang
ing of school books, which results in a
vast deal of money being expended for
books and nothing substantially accom
plished thereby. His measure amonds
tho act of 1871, making the period fiva
years instead of three for the introduc
tion of new school books. He adds pen
alties that will make tho law effective,
if enforced. It provides that any school
superintendent, controller, director or
teacher, who doesn't comply with tho
act, cuu bj fined $200 and deprived of
his oiricu. State appropriations will
not be paid, either, to district that do
not obey the law.
The reports received at the depart
ment of Internal affairs show that there
has been a steady increase in the total
railroad earnings in Pennsylvania slnoe
181I0.- The report also show that there
has oeon a decrease in the number of ac
cidents. In 18H4 there was one passenger
killed out of every 3,543,205 carried,
and one Injured out of every 191,747. So
there is a chance in every three million
and a half of being killed. Eight per
sons wore killed and 47 injured to every
hundred miles of road operated. The
Secretary of Internal Affairs says that
