Tho I'lttHburtf Time says: When

what many thought would he an Im
possible feat, but in Philadelphia a man

Carlylo says: "Cast forth thy act,
thy word into the ever-living, ever
working universe; it Is a seed grain that
cannot dio. UnnourUhcd to-day, it will
be found flourishing as a banyan grovo
perhaps, alas a hemlock forest after
a thousand years.
Tho DuHnis ball team, which played
with Frunklin, Oil City and Tltusville
last week won two games out of six.
Tho last game was won at Oil City
Saturday. The Cmirirr stood by tho
boys faithfully and always had good
excuses to offer for each defeat.
The last legislature passed a law re
quiring the county commissioners to
subscribe for Bnd have bound, at the ex
pense of the county, at loast three coun
ty papers. Our county commissioners,
we understand, will not mako a selec
tion of papors, but will allow tho incom
ing commissioners to subscribe for the
papers they may select. If the leading
papers of the county are chosen, of
course the Star Is sure of a cash sub
scriber. Astronomers will tell you that it Is
very difficult to establish an observa
tory in a great city. Why ? Because
the thunder of the vohlcles upon the
pavement is such that there are oscil
lations going on all the time, slight
trembles so that you can not measure
with absolute accuracy. There is great
danger that when men are whirled in
business they cannot make clear and
critical observation of important things
which concern their soul.
If your friond goes wrong, even griev
ously wrong, it is base in you to desort
him. Thon, more than ever does he
need your aolp, and, on the supposi
tion that he has been your true friend,
he is entitled to it. Of course, you
can neither approve or condone his
wrongdoing. It may become your pain
ful duty to toll him with the utmost
candor what you think of his faults, but
never to kick, him while everybody else
la engaged in the same business. To do
that roqulres no oourage nothing but
a little cheap bluster.
Wear a sunny face. It Is your privi
lege. It has the quality of morcy; it is
twioe blessed. It blesses its pos8essor,and
all who come under its benign influence;
it is a daily boon to him who wears
it, and a constant, ever-flowing bene
diction to all his friends. Men, women,
youth and children, seek the friendship
of the sunny-faoed. All doors are open
to them that smile. All social circles
welcome cheerlness. A sunny face is an
open segatne to heart and home. By it
burdens are lightened, cares dispelled,
sorrows banished, and hope made to
reign triumphant, where fear, doubt
and despondency held high carnival.
Try It.
By the way the wind blows now there
are good Indications of a warm time
between the school directors of Brook
ville borough and managers of the
Memorial Home about the schooling of
the inmates of the Home under the act
of the legislature at its last session.
The management of the Home have
asked the school directors to allow ten
of the children of the Home to attend
the borough schools this coming term,
and the remainder of the inmates will
be provided for at the Home. The
directors say they cannot attend unless
the sohooling is paid for, but the law
Bays they can. A school building was
erected last'year in the neighborhood
of the Home to accommodate the
children of that section of the Brook
vllle school district and the children of
Home, but now the management want to
send the older scholars to the higher
school and keep the smaller ones at
the home. By this charge there are
only about twenty-five children for the
new school building. It looks very
much now as if the matter will get into
court before it Is settled. An appro
priation of tl,500 was made to provide
for the schooling of the Home children
for two years.

Brookvllle Democrat.!
Last Saturday afternoon the Reyn
oldsville brass band drovo over to
Brookville, tholr object being recrea
tion, and to furnish our citizens with
some good music They supposed our
street was nearer paved than it proved
to be, and expected a fine promenade on
it. Thoy discoursed excellent music for
about two hours, to the delight of all
who listened to them, and that was a
large crowd. This is, without question,
the best band In the county, and it has
few superiors in this section of the
State. They drove back home Satur

Sandy Valley.
As Sandy Valley has not been heard
from for a number of weeks, we shall
recount tho events of tho past two
weeks.
Mrs. Ida Saltzglvor, of this place, is
very ill.
Mrs. Mary Shoemaker Is visiting
friends at Reynoldsvillo.
Miss Eva Bee bo, of this place, is vis
iting relatives at Brookvllle.
Miss Magglo Woods, of Brookvlllo, is
visiting friends at this plaeo.
Miss Netta Coax was on the sick list
for a few days during tho past week.
W. T. Cox rojmrts a good rush of bus
iness at his new store at Reynoldsville.
James Saltzglver has completed his
now residence and removed thither last
Friday.
Thore will be an ice cream festival at
tho Sandy Valley church Saturday ovon
Ing, Sept. 2nd, for tho benefit of tho
preacher.
Master Todd Johnston, of Pittsburg,
is sending a fow weeks with his grand
parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Coax, of
Valley Homo.
Mrs. N. J. Steelo, our genial store
keeper, is doing a rushing business.
Our pretty postmistress seems to be
doing the same.
Miss Edith Coax, whllo enjoying hor
solf Immensely, was thrown from tholr
hoi-so hurting her right arm so severely
that sho was comollcd to carry it in a
sling for a short time. Edith, bo more
careful the next tlmo you mount so
vicious a quadruped.
Some of Roynoldsvlllo's gontlomon
must have had a Sunday picnic last Sab
bath some place back in tho country
judging from tho number of rigs that
passed through here on that day. If
"Llttlo Annto Roonoy" Is tholr sweet
heart, wo would advise them not to
distribute the information all over tho
stato of Pennsylvania.
The picnic at the Pine Grove school
house ono week ago last Friday was an
entire success. A large crowd was in
attendance as also was an excellent din
ner. Rev. A. E. Metier was present
with his tout and photographing appa
ratus and delighted the boys and girls
with some fine specimens of tholr coun
tenances. Recitations and vocal musto
were the order of the afternoon. Among
the speakers were Rev. Jelbart, of Era-
orlckvillo, Miss Weir, of DuBols, Miss
Bessie Moore, of Brookvllle, Miss Jennlo
Waito, of Sandy Valley, Rov. A. E.
Metier, of SchatTnur's Corners, and the
home talont, A largo swing was erect
ed which afforded a great deal of amuso-
mont for tho younger class of people.
We extend our thanks to the people of
that place for the hospitality shown us
on that day.
We pity Boobe's hogs. Why? Be
cause, after the ravagos made on their
cornflold by a number of town ladles,
in all probability they will have to
starve during the coming winter. Let
us explain our meaning. Last Friday a
number of ladles from Reynoldsville,
including Mrs. Jno. Bartle, Mrs. E.
L. Evans, Mrs. Annie Hendricks, Mrs.
H. Herpel and Mrs. Joanna Anderson,
arrived at the home of L. M. Beebe al
most entirely unexpected. Thoy took
possession of the farm, ransacked the
larder, deposited the roof of the house
where the floor should be and, not
content with this much, shouldered the
cornfield and took it home with them
on the evening train. Come again, la
dies, the potatoe patch and the onion
bods are left yet. You forgot those,
did you not? A great deal of amuse
ment was afforded by one of ladies
asking who was the largest lady in
the crowd. Their prospective measure
ments were taken and it was decided
that Mrs. Hendricks outrivalled them
all.
