STEEL PROBE.
Report of House Committca
to Deal With New Laws.
MORGAN NOT TO TESTIFY
StanUy Investigators Will Urgo New
Legislation Aimed to Prohibit In
dustrial Corporations Engaging
In Railroad Business Many
Millionaires Witnesses.
Washington, Feb. 20. Public hear
lugs by the Stanley steel Investigating
committee are approaching an end so
far at the work of "digging" Is con
cerned. Tho Stanley committee lias
practically cpmpleted Its labor. A few
more witnesses will he put on the
stand, after which the committee will
begin work on the report. The Indlca
Hons aro that tho public hearing will
be closed the latter part of next week
When the Investigations begun last
spring Chairman Stanley planned to
ask J. 1'. Morgan to appear as a wit
ness. Mr. Stanley has entcrtnliml a
number of milllonalrei, among them
the late John W. Gates. B. H. Gary.
Andrew Carnegie, George W. Perkins
and Jnme.i J. Hill, as well as such em
inent publicists ns Theodore Roosevelt
and Louis l nrandels. Mr. Morgan
will not appear In this investigation,
because tho committee does not believe
his testimony Is Important enough to
delay action on the report until his re
turn to the United States.
It is the belief of the committee that
lames J. Hill's testimony demolished
the theory that Mr. Morgan was in
strumental In Inducing the United
States Steel corporation to take over
the Hill ore leases. Mr. Hill denied ab
solutely that Morgan had anything to
do with the negotiations between the
Lake Superior Consolidated company,
trustee of the Hill properties, and the
teel corporation.
Important recommendations looklnv
to changes In the anti-trust and com
merce act may be Incorporated In the
report for the committee on inquiry
It is the understanding that the ma
Jority wlllrecommend that the com
merce act be so amended as to prohibit
industrial corporations from engaging
in the business of common carriers. If
such a law were enacted it would com
pel the steel company to dispose of Its
roads in the Mosaba region. Members
of the committee nre" unable to indi
cate at this time Just what amend
ments to the Sherman law will be rec
ommended. Present Indications are that the re
port of the Stanley committee will deal
largely with proposed legislation rath
er than with disclosures of tho prac
tices of the steel corporation.

CHANCE FOR INVENTORS.
Fortune Awaits the One Who Can De
vise a Cheap Process of Detinnlng.
One honest method of getting rich
quick is pointed out by the Waste
Trade Journnl. A fortune awaits the
inventor of n cheap process for de
(Inning old tin cans. Saya the Journal
"The dllllculty In the wny of re
claiming the tin from old tin cans Is
In tho amount of refuse they contain.
They nre rnrely free from food nnd
when picked from n dump nre filled
with ashes and other refuse. In ad
dition to this, they are covered with
a paper label nnd frequently varnish
ed besides. Before the tin can be dis
solved off by any substance the food,
lnhels nnd other foreign matter must
be removed, and this Is tho obstacle
hi tho way. There nre several plants
In the United States which carry on
