Be a Good Loser.
If there is anything that is irritatinc:
it is the way that some people talk of
their trouble, as if they were a kind
of treat not cheerfully, but with a
kind of gloomy joy; in a word, they
are resigned. It is only mighty big
humbugs that will say they are thank
ful for troubles. We may eventually
live to see that they were right and
best for us, but at the time it is sheer
hypocrisy to waggle our bends solemn
ly nnd say. "Happiness Is a snnre any
how; it Is foolish for any one to ex
pect happiness in this grizzly old
world."
People who tall; that way don't de
serve happiness. We weren't put here
to 1)0 miserable. The Idea that lifo is
for suffering and not enjoyment is fast
being shelved. If the Lord approves
of lamentation and tears he would not
have put so much in the world to make
us hopeful and happy.
There is nothing more common than
trouble. We all have our troubles, but
it is the wise ones of earth that keep
their burdens in the background. It
is so common and cheap and selfish to
be continually parading one's griefs
and disappointments. Wbntever our
lot, we should all learn the wisdom of
that helpful little prayer, "Help me to
win, if win I may, but if I may not
win make me a good loser."
Concerning Women,
The famous lucky petticoat of the
Stroud family Is now on its way to

Ellen Terry says that when men
writers draw a good woman they In
evitably depict a silly one. She charac
terizes Helena in "All's Well That
Ends Well" and Julia In "Two Gentle
men of Verona" as "doormat women."
Imogen Is tho most attractive of
Shakespeare's women, says Miss Terry
Queen Olga of Greece baa a confes

most of the crowned beads of Europe
who have been induced to answer more
or less personal questions propounded
by the queen. Edward VII. of Eng
land has written after the question.
"What la the most objectionable man
you know?" the answer. "The .man
who points an umbrella at you and
shouts. 'There he is.'" The queen
takes the album when! she travels aud
is said to display unconcealed delight
in exhibiting its contents to her royal
acquaintances.

"If a hen and a half lay an egg
and a half In n day and n half, how
many eggs would six hens lay In six
days?"
That question was not answered
at tho regular monthly meeting of
tho Wayne County Pigeon and Poul
try association which was convened
Wednesday evening In tho basement
ot tho Allen House, President E. E.
Kinsman in tho chair.
This question, however, was solv
ed at tho special request of the
i itizen man, who was honored with
an invitation to attend the meeting:
"How do you make hens lay in,i,thls
kind of weather?" "Get your pul
lets hatched early enough; got them
all they want to eat; and make thorn
scratch for It, nnd you'ro all right."
April, it was said, was tho best
month in tho year for hatching. The
trouble is most peoplo don't hatch
early enough.
"We're going to have a poultry
show next November," declared sev
eral enthusiastic chicken men, who
were present at tho meeting.
"There's some mighty good birds
right up hero in Wayne county."

tell, however, of a woman up in
Seelyville. Mrs. Minnie Polley by
name, who has twenty-four Leghorn
pullets, and has been averaging
eighteen eggs a day right through
the zero weather. She opens up her
foop every morning at seven o'clock.
They told of a fellow, who has COO
hens, and is only getting 50 eggs a
day. His eggs cost him fifty cents
a dozen.
The meeting was called at 8:23 p.

kept tho minutes of the meeting on
tho poultry stationery of F. U. Lord,
