The ofliclul program of entertainment for the annual convention of the Amer ican Bankers' association to be held in New Orleans beginning Nov. 20 pro rides n continuous round of pleasure for the financiers and their wives. Atwood Plans Air Trip From Brazil to Valparaiso For $100,000. narry N. Atwood, tho aviator, plans to fly across the South American cou tluent, for which he will obtain ?100, 000 if successful. The route, which will take him across the South American continent, will touch Bahla and Rio de Janeiro, In Brazil; Montevideo, In Uruguay; Bue nos Aires, in the Argentine Republic, and Valparaiso, Chile. y "I shall net $100,000 if I am success ful," said the aviator. "I may cros the Andes mountains, but that will de pend upon what conditions are prevail ing. I shall go to Brazil the latter part of November and start the flight Imme diately on arrival." ADVISES VACCINATION OF HIS EMPLOYEES. Secretary Wilson Warring on Typhoid. Is Not Compulsory. War on typhoid fever was declared by the department of agriculture in a recommendation approved by Secre tary Wilson that nil tho 13,500 employ ees of the department be vaccinated against typhoid. Secretary Wilson's action followed the report of a special committee of three appointed by him to look Into tho ndvisability of recommending that all the employees of the department bo vacclnntcd against tho disease. It was explained that the department cannot compel Its employees to submit to the vaccination, but the department expressed a strong hope that tho re quest that tho employees bo vacci nated would be acceded to. Secretary Wilson gave his hearty approval of the plan. Ho pointed out that of the 11,000 employees of the department outsldo of the District of Columbia many are engaged in traveling about tho country during at least n part of tho year. To protect them from tho dangers of lmpuro water the vaccina tion against typhoid has been recom mended. Secretary Wilson said that the sug gestion came from the war depart ment. During the Mexican revolution the war department had had many of the United States soldiers stationed nlong the Mexican border vaccinated agninst typhoid and thoso vaccinated escaped the disease, while many of those who wero not suffered from ty phoid. A similar recommendation, it Is un derstood, will be made by the heads of the other departments to their employ ees, particularly to those who have much traveling about the country to do. Chief Clerk McNeir of the state department said today that while no general recommendation hnd yet been made to the employees of that depart ment, still vaccination against typhoid had been recommended to the Wnlted States consuls going to typhoid Infect ed districts. Some of them, be said, had acted upon the suggestion. NAVY NAVIGATION HEAD. Commander Andrews to Succeed Ad miral Nicholson Jan. 1. Commander Philip Andrews, aid to the secretary of the navy, will become head of the all powerful bureau of navigation In the navy department on Jan. 1, succeeding Rear Admiral Regi nald F. Nicholson, who will hoist his flag as commander in chief of the United States Asiatic fleet. Although Admiral Nicholson will be relieved of his duty as head of tho navigation bu reau the first of the year, he will not assume his new command until some time In March, when he will relievo Rear Admiral Murdock, the present commander. In nunounclng the proposed changes Secretary of the Navy Meyer said that he was In receipt of a telegram from President Taft approving tho trans fern and also called attention to the fact that he now had a number of commanders Instead of admirals head ing the bureaus of his department.
