, Mr., Van Home seemed

Principal Oday Says They
Study Better On Cloudy
Days
AN INTERESTING INTERVIEW
GIVEN EXPRESSLY FOR THIS
PAPER.
" Do you find that the children
do as' well on rainy, days .as they do
when the weather is clear?"
Such was the question put to
Prof. Harry A. Oday, Ph. B super
vising principal of the Honesdalo
Public Schools by a Citizen man last
Monday afternoon, shortly befor
the .close of a day that was cold and
dark and dreary, When it rained and
rained, and never seemed to weary.
" I rather think they do fully as
well," he said, " and I would say bet
ter. There Is no desire on their part
to be out-doors. They would rather
be Indoors than anywhere else. That
contentment of spirit Is present If
you can have lights turned on,
" A day like to-day," he continued
rumlnatively, "I can work better
than any other day, On a nlc
bright, sunshiny day I sometimes
feel I'd rather be somp other place,"
he .sighed.
" Do you know of'any cases where
children of poor people, Tvho, are be
yond the school age, are kept In
school by their parents at a personal
sacrifice?" he was asked,
" I doubt it very much," he re
sponded. "Take It In the borough,
we 'haven't many poor families. We
have one. or' two families that are
very poor. The other day I found
two boys, one fifteen,-the other seven
teen. One can read and write, and
tho other can't read at all, They
haven't been kept, In schoQl to the
detriment of their parents.
" I have at different times taken
cases to the Poor1 Board, and they
had to furnish 'the families with the
necessary -clothing. We have a few
families that the Needlework Guild
helps. They do a wliole lot for the
poor people. All our children are
comfortably clothed. We go through
the school and have the teachers
make up a list of the needy and give
it to the Needlework Guild and they
help certain families.
" I think there Is one case 1b
Honesdnle where) a woman keeps a
boy, who could go to work, in
school, at a tremendous sacrifice on
her part. She does any kind of
work to make a living. He is the
oldest of three or four children.
"Next Week is Institute Week.
The entire building -will be open all
of the week, The, "work of the pu
pils will ho on exhibition in the dif
ferent grade rooms. Last year we
locked the. entire building.
" In the grade rooms in the new
building we put a green burlap strip
one foot wide Just above tho black
boards for the purpose of beautifying
the room and also to pin the work on
they exhibit
" So If tpe parents come to In
stitute and want to see the ivotk of
tho children they can do It. Also we
would very much like tho people of
the town to come In and see the kind
of work the chlldron are doing.
" White Mills won both prizes U
tho contest last Friday night, The
room -was very comfortably filled.
The Judges were Prof. Mark T.
Creasy, principal of tho Hawley
