Candidates Must Ho Careful Where
Tlicy Place Their Money.
Under the corrupt practices act no
candidate for office and no treasurer
of any political party "shall pay, give
or lend, or agree to pay, give or
lend, either directly or Indirectly,
any money or other valuable thing
for any nomination or election ex
penses whatever, except for printing
and traveling expenses, stationery,
advertising, postage, dissemination
of information, the payment of clerks
and typewriters, and for watchers to
the number allowed by law."
Candidates are required to fllo
sworn accounts of all their expen
ses, both at the primaries and gen
eral election, and are not allowed to
take their offices until such accounts
have been filed. Severe penalties
are imposed upon any candidate vio
lating any of the provisions of the
law. Those who solicit contributions
or gifts of money or other things of
value also subject themselves to se
vere penalties. No one should ask
any candidate for contributions for
any purpose other than thoso allow
ed by law, for In so doing he or
they not only break tho law but also
ask tho candidate to break it and
swear falsely when he files his ac
count and takes his oath of office.
