"There was nothing left for us to do," said President Underwood of the THOUGHT FIRE PART OF SHOW. Qreat Loss of Life In Russian Theater Due to Showman's Order. St. Petersburg, March 8. The fact that only twenty persons out of 140 were saved In the fire at the moving jplcture show at Itologoe Monday night was largely due to the showman tell ing the audience that the pictures would bo accompanied by appropriate sounds nnd that they need not be alarmed. When the explosion occurred the spectators thought It was part of the entertainment. Even the cries of "KIre!" were received with laughter. A number of men escaped by tram pling tho women and children under their foot On the other hand, a work man braved tho flames fifteen times and rescued about twenty persons, but finally perished himself. Will you please tell me how to tell tho gander from the goose? A. Tho guilder is larger, his head Is coarser, and he has a squeaking voice. while the female makes hoarse sounds. Turn a dog Into the ynrd and the gander will hiss nnd chase him. Q. The ground In my poultry yard Is rank. How can I get It sweet again? A. Cover the top with air slaked lime, let it Ho a day, then spade under and sow a quick growing crop. Q. I notice whole wheat in the drop pings of my fowls. Is this usual, or Is It n disease, and how can 1 stop it? A. You are not furnishing your fowls grit or what you do give them is not sharp enough to grind grain. Q. I have a beautiful Buff Leghorn cock bird and would like to know how to straighten his lopped comb. Would you breed from a bird In such condition? A. If your fowl's comb is creased and has finger marks, is too thin or has something else about Its shape that makes It turn, nothing can better it: otherwise the fowl may be out of condition. Examine him for lice or any ailment you may not have ob served, place him in seclusion nnd feed him well, especially of meat. Hardly think we'd breed him in such condi tion, especially for show. Q. If I glvo my fowls good care nnd rations In January and February can't I get as good fertility as in April? A. No. Fowls havo their natural reproductive season, and those months aren't on their calendar. April and May are best. THE FARMER'S DUCKS. A farmer friend had bred from the same ducks for fifteen years nnd each generation got smaller and smaller. To him ducks were just ducks if they had a rubber neck and a quack, until n year ago ho "happened in" and wo showed hi.n our Peklns. Sixty big fellows paraded before him; ho looked them over quietly, then said: "Rig ducks, them. Pretty old. ain't?" "No, Just ten weeks." "Ten weeks? Thunder!" It was hard to convince him. Ho took up a youug drake, balanced him in hand nnd said, "Why, this duck weighs nigh to seven pounds nnd !fl heftier than two of my old ones." When wo told hiui six to eight was the usual weight of ten week ducks. THK FAItUEH'8 SUCKS. that old quacks often reach twelve 4iid nre great layers, he said, "That settles It, I'll git rid of mine and raise Pektns." We took a picture of two of bis quacks to show tho usual farm duck which many farmers raise when they might breed the big profit payers. The two Just weighed seveu pounds, Md this Isn't much for adult ducks. Let the farmers quit raising little fishy flavored puddle ducks and take up tho big Aylesbury or Pekln. The Pekln is tho better, as it grows quicker, is the popular yellow, has a finer grain and flavor and picks easier. DON'TS. Don't throw feed Into filth. Try to feed hens on new ground, in clean lit ter or troughs. It's an old story that filth breeds disease. Don't make hoppers so largo that ground feed will stand long in them nnd mold. Don't forget that most of our practi cal knowledge comes from experience ami that attention to details makes up the sura total of success. Don't use a round roost. It causes corns, and round off the roost edges so fowls may sleep in comfort. Don't expect eggs to stay at winter prices all the year around. They drop If feed prices don't. Don't expect your hens to pay profit unless you keep' them busy. Lazy hen, llko lazy men, no good. Don't forget that poultry is an hon orable paying business for the man that will work, but no place at all for tho loafer and shirk. Don't forget that, gecso are vegeta rians; therefore feed them plenty of beets, cabbage, waste apples and pota toes In winter.
