"Corporations holding labor con tract's." be said, "set the dally task of convicts so high that it Is practically Impossible for them to get In any ex tra work for which they would be paid cash. In November the total extra re muneration at tho reformatory was $7S. Poor material, lnelllcient ma chines and unjust Inspection prevent prisoners doing any work for them selves. "Nearly 300 boys are employed on the contract for shirts and overalls. The task Is twelve shirts a day. The completion of the task Is demanded, and if not completed the prisoner Is sent to the 'hole,' which Is a circular cell barely largo enough for a man's body. On the bared floor are two Iron gloves, and into these prisoners' hands are fitted and locked. "There the prisoner stands, unable to change his position. The average commitment is two days, and in that time all the food he receives Is a little corn bread and water. Nine out of ten are taken to the hospital when released." Wnrreu to get possession of Walter Wellington Warren, the ten-mouths-old son of Mrs. Mnudo M. Campbell, on the ground that the child's mother had agreed to permit Warren and his wife, Dora, to claim the child as their own by blood and did permit them to nssert such claim to their friends and relatives for eight mouths, when she took the child uway from. them. Warren said In his petition, upon which he got an order directing Mrs. Campbell to produce'the child In court, that prior to Feb. 15 Inst Mrs. Camp bell resided with himself and his wife. They desired n child very much, he said, and Mrs. Campbell Svus about to become the mother of one. Accord lugly they made an agreement. War reu said, by which Mrs. Warren was to claim the child as her own, and as soon as It was born and had been In her custody she was to appear to be lli and a physician was to bo called to treat her for tho period necessary In such a case. By a vote of KU) to 472 the striking chauffeurs decided to accept the last proposition of the taxicab companies, which they reject ed at flrst, and returned to work this morning. The strike leaders hold that the strikers go back to work under better conditions than they had before they went on strike and that the clause In the agreement by which union men will not be discriminated against amounts virtually to recognition of the union.
