Wild Ballooning.
u IFUaiVTML, flV 111!
proved unproductive of results excopt
to dc?icii tho conviction that ordinary
, ballooning Is In the highest degree
foollutrdy. The balloons drifted In one
! general direction, mid the race proved
to ho merely n test of endurance for
, the balloons and of the nerve of their
navigators. The lesson of tho veil-
turcs ns to nlr currents seems to le
that tho currents In tho northern iart
( of Europe arc to be avoided unless the
1 voyager wants to drift toward the
. North sea. The contest in America n
je-ir ago was much more Instructive
In a practical way.
1 The race from St. Louis for the Iten
, nett cup In October, 1007. was really a
sliced test. The balloons drifted east
1 ward, as they were expected to do.
and apparently confirmed the theory
held by aeronauts fifty years ago that
I there Is a reliable eastward current
j that the skilled balloonist may enter
and travel In at the rate of forty to
sixty miles an hour with sonic chance
of landing near n destination fixed be
forehand. This current was noted by
Professor Wise during an nscent with
1-n Mountain In the fifties.. This trip
began at St. Louis and ended In Jef
ferson county, N. T., the balloon trav
eling 1.150 miles 620 air line In twen
ty hours. Wise believed that he could
! cross the Atlantic In a balloon, but
: lacked funds to make the venture.
'These early halloonlsts at least made
discoveries as n warrant for their dar
ing. In one nscent Washington Ioii-
nldson's balloon collapsed at the height
of a mile, but the aeronaut kept till
senses. Seeing that tho balloon sway
ed Instead of descending rapidly, he
clung to the basket and landed In a
prtrt XVIan fifirl n a I rti lint nvnnrlnnnn
.......... .-rvw-''v
nnd then odopted the parachute with
success. Tho eastward current Is sup
posed to be two miles above the earth.
If It Is there always some daring nero
naut may chance to get Into It and add
useful knowledge to this particular
branch of aeronautics.
Personal litbcrty.
Every great election brings out In
somo form this question of personal
liberty. It Is often strenuously invoked,
although tho right to Its exercise Is
seldom If ever strenuously denied. It
Is probably stretched unreasonably
more often than It Is unjustly confined.
If a man living whero there Is hut a
single highway wished to shift n pile
of heavy bowlders nnd In the course of
transferring them should deposit them
In the middle of tho road so that no
team could pass he would be going no
further In the exercise of liberty than
do some who take license with liberty.
No man will do that, because he knows
that personal liberty Is the right of all,
nnd every one must guard It for all.
This Is tho sane view, and If It were
generally lived up to there would lie
few clashes on this question. All roads
are everybody's, and no man or class
should abuse privileges on them.
Booscvclt as Editor.
Gossip with a peg to hang Its talcs
upon has settled for Roosevelt's case
the burning question, "What shall be
done with ex-prealdents?" After do
ing the stunt in the African jungle be
Is to edit a magazine. There were
good grounds for the guess. lie had
been engaged to write n scries of hunt
ing articles for one periodical, and tho
only way to get a "beat" on the lucky
publisher was to go one better nnd
star the ez-presldent as the editor of
a rival magazine.
Mr. Roosovelt Is a ready writer and
will have nn Immense audience for his
output His opinions will always find
n world of somo magnitude awaiting,
nnd as editor he will have both oppor
tunity nnd incentive to slice them up
nnd dole thorn out Just when they will
be most likely to "hit tho nail hard."
With a warship fleet going to the
rescue of a balloon fleet which was
dono up In a peace- cruise, It looks ns
though predictions of the havoc nn
airy navy can piny with old style
armament is forty horsepower loose
talk.
It goes without saying that what
ever copyright name the magazine to
ho edited by "ex-President" Iloosovelt
snlls under tho public will never know
It ns other than "Roosevelt's maga
zine." A letter mailed fourteen years ago
recently reached Its destination. If
that had happened to certain letters
heard from lately a world of bother
would havo been saved all around.
Bo Tolstoy is a "no government"
man. That's usually tho way when
ono has had "too much of a good
thing" as it Is mado lu Russia.
If tho knlser really wants to acqulro
glory as tho Inventor of a brake ho
should got up something that will call
a halt on runaway balloons,
