Washington, Deo. 29. Upon tho
windy heights of Arlington cemctory
the Maine dead. brounht from Havana
by the battleship Toxos, yesterday
wore laid awry in thoir final resting
plncos with simple religious services
and the impressive honors of war In
the presence of the president, mem
bers of the cabinet, ofllcerB of tho army
and navy and other representatives of
the government. A cabinet officer,
surveying tho flag draped colIlns before
the ceremonies began, said: "The lives
of those men cost Spain her colonies."
Tho caskets Interred yesterday rang
ed row on row. Over each was spread
nn American ensign, Upon which lay a
wreath of galax leaves. Around the
enclosure were drawn up the cavalry
of Fort Meyer, to the right was a bat
talion of mnrlnos from the navy yard
and to tho left a detachment of jackles
from the Texas. In tho flag draped
stand in the rear wcro the president
and his cabinet, Admiral Dewey, Major
General Miles and a distinguished
group of officers of tho army nnd navy.
while nil around pressed the throng of
people who bad braved the snow and
biting cold to pay their last tribute to
the dead. Among these woro many
relatives and friends of those who had
been lost In tho disaster.
Thero was 1 tender appropriateness
in tne fnct that Captain SIgsbeo, who
was In command of tho Maine when
she was blown up, had charge of the
ceremonies In honor of his men and
that Father Chldwlck. who was chan-
lain of tho Maine, was there to per-
rorm tne last rites. Three others who
lived through that awful night In Ha
vana harbor were at tho side of tho
graves of their comrades Lieutenant
Commander Walnwrlght, who was ex
ecutlve ofllcer of the Maine and who
sunk the Pluton and tho Furor at San
tlago; Lieutenant F. C. Bowers, who
was assistant engineer of the Maine,
and Jeremiah Shea, a fireman on the
Maine, who was blown out of the stoke
hole of the ship through the debris.
escaping uninjured and most miracu
lously.
After the Marine band had played
the dirge, "Safe in the Arms of Jesus
tho Protestant services were held, and
were vjry simple. Chaplain Clark
read the burial service of tho Epis
copal church and then gave nway to
Father Chldwlck, who was assisted by
Ftevp. Holalnd and Brown and two
purple robed acolytes. With head
bared to the wintry blast thd Maine's
chaplain read a memorial service ae
cording to the rites of the Catholic
church, consigned the dead, blessed
tho ground, repeated the Lord's Prayer
and concluded with a fervent appeal
for tho repose of tho souls of the de
parted. A detachment of marines then
marched to tho right of the graves and
llred three volleys over the dead, and
In the deep stillness that followed the
crash the clear, silvery notes of a
bugle rang out the soldiers and sailors'
last good night.
With the sounding of taps the cere
monies ended. The president and his
party and the other distinguished
guests, the military and the crowds
then withdrew. Before leaving Cap
tain Slgsbee Introduced Jeremiah Shea
to the president. When asked for an
explanation of the mystery of his es
cape by the president Shea responded,
as he did to a similar Inquiry from
Father Chldwlck at the time of the
disaster: "I don't know how I got
through. I was blown out. I guess
I must have been an armor piercing
projectile."

the Leylnnds would very soon extend
thoir operations to Now York. It Is In

of Wind Gap. The three latter will
have to pay thr costs, which -.111) mint

regard to the rights of fishermen and
owners of streams are established. A
fisherman Is guilty of a trespass who
enters a s'.roam and fishes without the
consent of the land ownor. although
ho wades the stream and does not
touch dry land. The fact that the
ctato has stocked the streams with
fish does not make It a public stream.
