Manila, Dec. 11. An expedition
headed by the battleship Oregon loft
Munlla for Subig Saturday night. It Is
reported that the Filipino commander
Goneral Alejandrlno, with his staff,
has surrendered to General McArthur,
and there Is also a rumor that Alejan
drlno Is at Agutlar, suffering from a
wound received In a fight between In
surgents and bandits, and that he will
be given an opportunity to surrender
and will bo properly cared for.
Major Spenco, with a column ot tho
Thirty-second regiment, captured a
now insurgent camp, an uncompleted
stronghold, In tho Tassan district. Ho
left Dinalupau at daybreak Saturday
nnd marched ten miles along moun
tain trails, finally encountering a
large band of insurgents, who retreat
ed after a brief skirmish. Tho Ameri
cans had no losses.
The records of the treasury of tho
so-called Filipino government, to
gether with a quantity of paper money
and another Nordenfeldt, have been
found at Mangntarem.
Three Americans who, wlthacommls
sary sergeant of the Twelfth Infantry,
were traveling from San Fernando to
Angels, left their escort for a moment
and went Into the bush. As they did
not return speedily a search was made
for them, but they could not be found.
They were probably captured by the
rebels. A mall orderly disappeared be
tween Angels and llamban. He also
Is supposed to have been captured.
A force of 100 Insurgents on Satur
day attacked near Baliuag a wagon
train escorted by 30 men of the Six
teenth Infantry. A sharp engagement
followed. The Filipinos lost 18 In
killed and nine captured. During the
recent attack by tho Insurgents upon
Vlgan the Filipinos obtained posses
sion of the plaza and of a church in
the center of the town, from which the
Americans dislodged them. It seems
that the escaped Spanish obtained guns
and fought with the Americans against
the insurgents.
Colonel Julio Delrlo, ho is among
the released Spaniards that have Just
arrived here, gives ah Interesting ver
sion of the famous Irene Incident in
Subig bay in July of last year. He
was formerly in command of the
Spanish troops in the Olongapo dis
trict. His narrative is corroborated by
Senor Rafael Rosello, a wealthy Span
ish merchant, who also fell into the
hands of the Insurgents.
Both declaro that the Spaniards sur
rendered to Captain Coghlan, of the
United States cruiser Raleigh, on an
express agreement that they were not
to be given up to the Filipinos, and
they assert that the Spanish govern
ment has promised to press their
claims against the United States for
their long imprisonment.
Colonel Del Rio says:
"Captain Coghlan gave his word that
our capitulation would be accepted
as It was made, that Is, to tho Ameri
cans. Ho promised that we should
not be given Into the hands of the In
surgents, nnd I believe he was sin
cere. Later the Concord went to Ca
vlte for Instructions, returning with
an order from Admiral Dewey that we
were to be handed over to the insur
gents." Story of a Slave.

Georco D Williams, of Manchester, Mich.,
tells how such a slave was made free. Ho

London, Dec. 11. It Is hardly too
much to regard General Qntacro's re
pulse near Stormberg ns the most serl
our defeat British arms have yet sus
tained In tho whole campaign. AN
roady tho oflloinl advices show that
two mon were killed, nine officers and
17 men woro wounded and nine of
ficers nnd 69G men are missing. Dut
it is evident that the worst is not yet
known. The proportion of wounded
nnd killed is so small, when compared
with tho missing who aro undoubted
ly prlsoiisrs In the hands of the Doers
that the supplementary list ot casu
alties is uwnitetl with serious misgiv
ings, as It is believed it will largely
Increase the casualties. It is algo
feared that there were serious losses
of guns nnd equipment.
General fiatacre left Putters Kranl
by train for Molteno, and then pro
ceeded by forced march 12 miles to
ward Stormberg. He had 4,000 men,
including the Northumberland Fusil
iers, the Hoyal Irish Hides and two
batteries of field artillery.
Tlie Urltlsh were unmolested by tho
Boers until the Boer position was
reached, whon a hot fire was unex
pectedly openedupon the advancing
column.
The engagement began at 4:15 n. m.
At 7 a. m., after a sharp artillery
duel, tho British retired. They aro
now marching toward Molteno. Gen
eral Gatacre found the enemy's posi
tion Impregnable. It was impossible
for tho British Infantry to get at the
Boors.
The column had arrived safely with
in a couple of miles of its destination,
the only incidents of the march being
an occasional sudden call of "halt,"
under the belief that the Boers were
near. Suddenly a terrific fire open
ed simultaneously on the British front
and right flank. The Itoynl Irish
Kllles, which formed the advance,
sought shelter behind a neighboring
kopje nnd wore speedily joined by the
remainder of the column, it was soon
found, however, that this position also
was covered by Boer guns, which wero
more powerful than had been sup
posed. The troops, therefore, sought
a safer position about halt a mile
away, two batteries In the meantime
engaging the Boers and covering the
troops In their withdrawal.
Tho action now became general nt
long range and a deatchment of
mounted Infantry moved northward,
with a view of getting on the enemy's
right flank. Suddenly a strong com
mando was seen moving from the
north nnd tho Itoyal Irish Rifles and
tho Northumberland regiment were
Bent out to meet It.
It was soon discovered, however.
that the Boers had machine guns well
placed, and the British wero compelled
to face a terrlblo flro.
Finding it Impossible to hold the
position In the face of an enemy ap
parently superior in positions, num
bers and artillery, tho British retired
on Molteno, the Boers following up
tho retirement closely and bringing
two big guns to bear on the retiring
column.
The Times publishes the following
dispatch from Molteno: General Gat
acre attempted to assault the Boer po
sition at Stormberg at dawn today
(Sunday). The guides led us wrong.
and wo were surprised while In fours
and after a very trying night march.
Our retirement was effected In ex
cellent order, there being no hurry,
oven at the most critical time. The
Northumberlands and Irish Rifles be
haved as if on review day. I fear our
losses are hfSavy. One of our guns wo
had to abandon.
A special dispatch from Ladysmltb,
by way of Frero, says: "General
Brocklehurst, with cavalry and artil
lery, reconnoitered In the direction of
Pepworth Hill with a view of cutting
off the Boer retreat, but ho found the
position still strongly held. The
Eighteenth Hussars, .pushing forward,
drew a furious fire and suffered heav
lly, losing four killed and 17 wounded.
we captured four Boer cannon.
General SchalU-Burger and Com
mandant Louis Botha aro In command
of the Boer forces Investing Lady-
smith. Their horses are said to be in
poor condition.
A heavy report was heard in tho
direction of Colengo yesterday. The
gound was followed by a big cloud of
smoke. The supposition is that the
enemy had blown up the highway
bridge.
The Transvaal government has de
elded to consider Mr. Winston Church-
Ill, who was captured Nov. 15 between
Estcourt and Chleveley, a combatant
officer, and to retain him as a prisoner.
Mr. Churchill has applied to General
Buller with a view of getting an ex
change. North of Modder River town the
British fired lyddite shells on the Boer
position, where the enemy was ap
parently constructing an emplacement
for a 40-pounder. The lyddite shells
appeared to do immense damnge, The
Boers retired, but the incident Is In
teresting ns showing that the Boers
are still in position quite close to
Modder River.
