WEDNESDAY. DECEMnEU 0, 1809.
OUR COUNTRY : First, Last and Forever.
Former Congressman Bruinm litis
' been In Washington the pust few
days not as representative of the
people, but in an effort to retain his
son In a Kovermnent position with' a
fat salary.
TlIOSK burglars are still ax large,
and the good people of Shenandoah,
who pay dearly for protection, are
nightly in danger of being "visited."
And still we have a force of six regular
pdlfeeuien and two or three special
watchmen.
The suggestion of a new combina
tion of Republican leaders in this
county, by our county seat corres
pondent, is still the topic of conversa
tion in Republican circles, not alone
in this county but at state head
quarters as well.
Senator Mark Hanna's advice to
young men "is to leave politics alone
as a profession." This admonition,
coming as it does from a man who
has achieved national prominence in
politics! seems rather Inconsistent,
yet it is true and can be followed with
profit.
The Miners' Journal says that B.
Jefferson Yost, of East Mahanoy
Junction, is a candidate for the Legis
lature "in the Second district." The
fact that Mr. Yost is a resident of the
Third district doesn't prohibit our
erratic contemporary from locating
him somewhere else.
Sensible Railroad rianager.
The general manager of the Dela
ware, Lackawanna & Western R. R.,
is evidently a man of more than aver
age good sense. Immediately after
the recent frightful accident at Pater
son ocourred the general manager
issued orders to the division officials
to afford the newspaper men every
possible facility to enable them to
prooure all the facts in order that their.
reports might be accurate and truth
ful. He preferred that the exact
truth should go out to the public
rather than possible exaggerations
based ou surmise.
This was sensible reasoning. It is
too much the practice of railroad
officials, when accidents occur on
their lines, to throw every possible
obstacle in the way to prevent re
porters from securing facts. The folly
of such a policy is readily seen. The
truth cannot be suppressed for any
length of time, and there is no possi
ble advantage to the railroad com
pany concerned in preventing the
facts from becoming known at once.
The Delaware, Lackawanna &
Western official went so far as to give
orders that, if necessary, special ar
rangements be made for the return of
newspaper men who might not be
able to leave on regular trains. This
was such a radical innovation from
what reporters have been accustomed
to that they were fairly dazed.
Virtually the company officials ren
dered the reporters all possible assist
ance, and as a result the first pub
llshed reports of the accident con
tained the exnot truth and practically
all the facts, even to the names of
those who were responsible for the
calamity. Here is a pointer for other
railroad officials.
What is true of railroads is equally
true of certain mine officials in this
section. It always pays to be honest
and frank with newspaper represen
tatives.
