OUR COUNTRY : First, Last and Forever.
Srvkuaii newspapers tlint sup

A WiLKKSiiAnrtK exoliange very
truthfully remarks that the Hoti.

often enough, as well defeated often
enough, to make room for some

Only a confirmed calamity party
could find encouragement to its de
feat In tho receut elections. All that
the Bryanites needed to complete
their happiness was the loss of Miss
issippi. Thk Charleston is the flrst vessel
lost by our navy since 1894, with the
exception of the Maine, whose de
struction was a mystery. The record
speaks well for the efficiency of
officers and men.
Gheat success attended the use of
voting machines in the recent elec
tions. The only trouble wasin Phila
delphia and Kentucky, where the
wheels became tangled : but you can't
impress that fact upon the Philadel
phia. Inquirer.
What has become of those news
paper calamity howlers? Some
months ago they had the courage to
intimate that it was only "apparent
prosperity" the country was enjoying,
but business is booming so much that
the "howlers" are as mum as Jersey
clams.

the enterprising spirit of its ' manage

Cotton is touching the highest
figures reached in a long time. The
planters, like the rest of the agricul
turists, are experiencing the Republi
can prosperity. Most of the cotton
growers doubtless voted against the
Republicans in 189C. A large part of
them will probably vote the same
way in 1900. Yet the Republican
party will win just the same, and the
prosperity which its victory three
years ago brought to the country will
be still farther, extended by the
triumph in'l00.
Albkady we see In windows and
on store counters the displays of
Christmas - toys. Not only are the
cheap attractive things for the holi
day season making themselves prom
inent, but the better class of goods
suitable for Christmas gifts are seen
everywhere. It is high time the
retailer had arranged for the holiday
advertising campaign. The man who
has been doing conscientious, per
sistent advertising all through the
fall, will have less difficulty inducing
a profitable and satisfactory business
for the holiday season. The man who
only uses advertising space when
business is good, ought to go after it
now with a determination to make
out of the holiday season what he has
lost In falling to advertise properly in
the past months. The Christmas
campaign should be a succession of
profitable advertisements. Money is
more plentiful than for years. Christ
