OUR COUNTRY: Hiit. Last and Forever.
And so it appears that England,
too, has been having u, little unpletis
tint experience with Americun canned
beef, designed for her soldiers.
Thosk responsible for the election
frutuls in Philadelphia, it is pleusing
to know, will be compelled to pay the
penalty for their crime a most
serious one.
RltYAN says the Democratic party
stands flrnily where it did in 1890.
He might go further back and say it
stands ilrmly where it stood in 1850.
It lias never shown any signs of mov
ing forward.
Thk entire country is interested in
the remtirkabltt political battle that
lias been, and is still being fought in
Kentuoky. Qoebol, the Democratic
candidate, is trying to steal the
Governorship, but ha is not likely to
succeed.
Tub most economical candidate
thus far heard from is the gentleman
who ran for register and recorder on
the Republican ticket in Monroe
comity this year. He says he started
on his campaign through tlie comity
on a bicycle with $15 in his pocket,
and when lie returned from the trip
lie had $10 of it left. He was also
"left" on election day.
EVIDENCE is multiplying. Here is
the Ashland News making tlie bold
assertion that just as the Hirers'
Journal was "given tlie widow's mite
(tlie Sheriff's proclamation) that
paper solemnly declared that the
battle had been declared off against
Opie in the west end and commenced
a more vigorous fight against the
balance of tlie Democratic ticket.,'t
The "old woman" of Schuylkill jour,
nalisiu is surely reaping what they
have sown. .
Next to furnishing direct informa
tion to the would-be purchaser who
knows what is wanted but is not sure
as to where to go to get it, ii chief re
sult of advertising is to create a de
mand for the goods whioh a merchant
may have on sale. In fact, an inter
esting advertisement is bound to at
tract the notice of thousands of
readers to a line of wares of which
the were previously Ignorant or to
which they had giyen no especial at
tention. It Is this constant and far
reaching Influence which helps to
render advertising so necessary and
profitable. t
There is promise of a lively con
test for the Congressional nomination
among the Democrats next year. The
free silverites, who have been badly
worsted for the past two years, have
brought forward John O. Olrlch,
Esq., and will rally their forces to his
support. The present Congressman,
Mr. Ryan, does not meet the demands
of either the silverites or the gold
wing of the Democratic party, and
he is, therefore, likely to fall by the
wayside at the expiration of his pres
ent term. He will be opposed by
both elements of his party. View.
Ing the contest at the present time it
is safe to offer the predietion that
neither Mr. Ityan nor Mr. Ulrioh will
receive the Democratic nomination
The gold-standard men of that party
are in control of the organization and
they will see to it that the Tamaqua
lawyer's political aspirations are
placed in cold-storage early In the
contest. Ex-Senator King, Judge
elect Wadllnger, SherllT Toole and
Judge Marr are now the recognized
leaders of the party in this oounty,
and the man of their choice will be
the Congressional nominee. That is

The government is recruiting an

with the alternative of $100 fine or en
listment. Foreigners are excluded, but com
mercial houses in Colon and Panama
are subjected to a forced loan of $100,-
000 at 12 per cent. Business la practi
