Robbers visited tho butcher shop of John
G. liausor, corner of Cherry and Chestnut
streets, at an oarly hour this morning. They
gained entrance by forcing open a window of
the kitchen, whieh adjoins tho rear of the
shop office. They escaped by way of the
kitchen door.whlch Mauser found open when
he descended from the floor above after being
aroused by tbe barking of a dog IIo found
a small writing desk missing from the office
and traced It to Maybcrry alley, about ISO
feet south of the butcher shop. The desk
bad been forced opon, but all tho robbeis se
cured from It was a dollar's worth of revenue
stamps. A mackintosh, small light-colored
coat and a pair of shoes wero also taken from
tho office. Tho robbers have not been
traced.

Philadelphia, Nov. 10. The unusual scarc
ity of.coal In tho Now England States and
tbo fact that the Augusta Insano Asylum, a
charitable institution supported by the state
of Maine, is almost entirely out of fuel und
its Inmates are lu danger of freezing unless
a fresh supply can be had soon, are responsi
ble for tbo chartor of tho schooner E. C.
Allen, on her way to load 775 tons at $3.50 a
ton, tho highest freight paid out of Philadel
phia to a port in Maine for forty years. So
far as known the last rate on coal to Augusta
was between 00 cents and f 1 a ton.
Philadelphia coal shippers cannot begin to
fill the orders that aro pouring in from tho
New England states, and in tho opinion of
dealers it looks very much as though that
section of the country Is about to experience
a coal famine that will mean much eutfering
and heavy losses in tho manufacturing dis
tricts. Coal is scarco at tidewater points nnd
oven upon its arrival at seaport towns tbe
greatest dllllculty Is boiug experienced in
getting bottoms to carry it forward to the
points required.

At about two o'clock this morning robbers
made an effort to rob the house of Anthony
Crimes, at 20 North West street. By allow
ing a Tear kitchen window, which they had
forced open, to drop the visitors awakened
the occupants of the houso. The thieves got
away. This is the fifth robbery, or attempted
robbery, that has taken place In tbe neigh
borhood, and tho third in the Iramodlato
vicluity, since last Saturday night and no ar
rest has been made, or clue secured. What
Is tbe matter with tho police ?
