MON DAY, NOVUM BEU 13, 18D9.
OUR COUNTRY : First, Last and Forcvef
Thk Chronicle is npain wrong, and
there is griive doubt thut it will ever
agnin be right. It was Republican
treachery that defeated Jenkyn.
Wk fait to see what the aspirations
of the editor of this paper has to do
with Chairman Quail ; but, neverthe
less, had the latter accepted the ad
vice of the Herald earlier in the
campaign the Republicans would
have elected their entire ticket, in
stead of half of it. Even the dis
crepant Journal and its manager will
acknowledge that.
Tub business end of our Pottsville
morning contemporary is evidently
conducted on the principle of sixteen
to one. The Journal professes to be a
Republican newspaper, but in view
of the fact that it accepts Democratic
literature "for the price" and refuses
Republicans the same consideration,
it is naturul to suppose the free silver
editor of our contemporary is run
ning both ends of that establishment.
The forty-four miners who left
Muhanoy City about ten days ago, ut
the solicitation of representatives of
a Montana mining company, upon
reaching their destination find that
they were deceived. The promised
good wages, steady work, cheap board
and fine surroundings did not ma
terialize ; instead, they were secured
to take the place of striking miners,
which they very properly refused to
do. It is useless to comment at length
on the unfortunate position in which
these miners find themselves, but it
teaches again the great lesson of the
various schemes resorted to bv un
scrupulous corporations to beguile
men, take them from their happy
homes and place them in surround
ings not at all to their liking. The
miners of the anthracite coal region
are getting along fairly well, and as
long as they can live contented and
happy.even if they do not accumulate
fortunes, they should remain here.
Thk announcement of the sudden
death of Hon. Etias Davis, County
Treasurer, was a serious shock to his
many personal friends in this town
and throughout the county. No man
in Schuylkill county enjoyed a wider
acquaintance, and few were there
more highly esteemed than Mr. Davis.
He was u man of many sterling qual
ities, affable, courteous and obliging
at all times. As a public official, and
he held many positions of trust, he
served the people honestly und capa
bly, and his administrations were
marked by unquestioned fidelity,
By nature a public-spirited man, he
early In life took an active interest in
public affairs. He was long identified
with the political movements of the
county, representing the Republican
party In many Btate and county con
ventions, and as chairman of the
county committee. He probably reu
resented his district in every county
and distriot convention for the past

DESPERATE FIQHT WITH INDIANS.
It Ends With Six Killed nnel Two Se
riously Wounded.
Flagstaff, A. T., Nov. 13. One white
man and five Navajo Indians killed and
two whites and one Navajo Indian
seriously wounded was the result of
an attempt of a deputy sheriff to ar
rest a Navajo Saturday ton miles south
of Walnut Station, news of which
has Just reached here. On Nov. 6 a
band of six Navajos, who were hunting
on Canon Padre, below Alderson Run,
in this county, held up William Mont
gomery, a cowboy, accused him of
stealing horses and threatened to kill
him. He came to Flagstaff and obtain
ed warrants for their arrest, and, with
Deputy Hocan, left to make the ar
rests. At Roden's camp they were
Joined by William Itoden and Walter
Durham. Arrivinc at the camp the
party dismounted, anticipating no
trouble. Hogan attempted to execute
the warrants and entered the brush
corral where four Navajos were, when
the Indians made resistance and a shot
was fired at Hogan, striking him in the
back, he at the same time being in a
tussle with one Navajo who was try
ing to shoot him. Hogan drew his
pistol and killed his antagonist. The
fight became general, and ended when
the ammunition of the white men was
exhausted. The result Is that five
Navajo are dead and one wounded.
Montgomery was shot through the
heart. Hogan was wounded three
times.

which had put off to rescue him. The

probable that tho murderer and the
steward, the only men left on board,
had gotten the schooner under way

Scotia coast. This was dlsproven later,
however, when the schooner was sail
