Labnm, and scattered them. The In

men dead on the field nnd tho Ameri

man was killed and two officers and
six men wounded.
Captain yrench took a reconnolter
Ing party beyond Labam after he had
met tho enemy, and was reinforced by
Major Bishop with two companies. The
insurgents brought up cavalry rein
forcements and there was a second
fight, during which their leader, Major
Salvador, was killed and many wore
wounded and carried away.
Colonel Bell has been given a free

Major Ballance's battalion of the
Twenty-second infantry entered Ca

resistance. The natives welcomed the
Americans, shouting "Viva Los Ameri
canos." The insurgent troops had lied
to tho mountains.
The Spanish' commission which en
tered the Insurgent lines a month ago
with money to relieve the wants of
soveral thousand military and civil
Spanish prisoners returned to Angeles
yesterday. Tho commissioners report
that they spent most of the time in
Tarlac and the vicinity, where there
are some 200 sick Spaniards in tho
hospital. The Filipinos ill treat and 111
feed them, refusing to surrender them,
as well as the other Spanish prisoners,
in the hope of, compelling Spain to
recognize the independence of the
Islands.
From Tarlac to Bamban, about two
thirds Of the way, the commissioners
traveled by train. Tho remainder of
the journey, from Uamban to Angeles,
they made on foot, escorted by hand
somely mounted Filipino cavalry.
There are 14 American prisoners,
they say, at Tarlac, all of whom are
well treated. Lieutenant J. C. Gill
more, of the United States gunboat
Yorktown, who fell into the hands
of the Insurgents at Baler, on the east
coast of Luzon, last April, is at Btngat.
The commissioners have brought a
letter to General Otis from a relative
of the murdered Filipino General Luna,
who wishes to avenge the assassina
tion by Agulnaldo's officers, and who
asks a personal interview with the
military governor.
According to the commissioners'
statement Aguinaldo, who is still at
Tarlac with 3,000 troops, wishes to
continue the war, although he has a
high opinion of the American officers
and soldiers. General Lawton he calls
"the night general," because that gen
oral ha3 attacked him so often in the
darkness that he never knows when
to look for him.
Aguinaldo is said to be well suppllert
with arms and ammunition, and ho
is able to get plenty of rice from the
northern provinces.
With the Spanish commissioners
came a large number of woraon, the
families of eight prominent officers of
the Filipino army, who recently ap
plied to General Otis for permission
to send their families to Manila. Gen
eral MacArthur compelled them to halt
about a mile beyond the outposts,
whore they will remain while their
credentials are being examined.

Ijndon, Oct. 31. The Dally Tel
Rraph liaa the following account of yw
UrtlHy'B engagement at Iadymlth
from its special correaixmuent at the
front;
An Indecisive reconnalwiance occur
red ywterdry. General Sir George
Stewart Whlto advanced before day
break with all the available forces
from Ladyiunith, moving toward Tlnto
Inyonl. Two brigades were under
Colonels lan Hamilton and Howard,
and another, with General Sir Archi
bald Hunter, went toward Ilulwan.
while two regiments, guided by Major
Adye, marched on our extreme left be
yond the old camp.
The first advance was made at dawn
with the object of shelling the Iloers
from tho position where on Sunday
they had mounted a number of guns.
On reaching the spot, however, It was
found that they had evacuated the po
sition. The British continued to advance,
and tho movement developod into a
reconnaisance in force. The enemy
were posted on a range of hills hav
ing n frontage of about 16 miles.
General White's plan of operations
was that as the movement developed
tho force constituting our center,
which was disposed under cover of a
kopjo about three miles from tho town,
should throw ltsolf upon the enemy,
while the left flank was being held by
the Fustleers and the Gloucesters. The
scheme was well advised, but failed In
execution, owing to the fact that tho
Doer position which formed our ob
jective was evacuated.
Our artillery quickly reduced tho vol
ume of the enemy's Are, but tho attack
delivered on our right flank was the
principal one. and tho column was
compelled to change. Tho Boer attack
had been silenced for a time, and our
Infantry advanced, covered by cav
alry. Tho enemy now began to develop a
heavy counter attack, and as they
were In great numerical superiority
General Whlto cave orders for tho in
fantry to bo gradually withdrawn.
The movement was carried out with
groat steadiness and deliberation, under
cover of our guns, which made excel
lent practice.
Some shells were thrown Into the
town from the cnomy's 40-pounders at
a range of over 6,000 yards, but no
damage was done. Tho engagement
lasted several hours and resulted, on
our side. In casualties estimated at
from 90 to 100. The Boer losses must
have largely exceeded this total.
Tho attack was admirably delivered
by our right and the Boers were fairly
driven out of ono of their strongholds
near Lombards Kop. It was not pos
sible, however, to push the success
much further, as beyond that point lay
a long, broken ridge, affording every
kind of natural cover. Of this the
enemy took the fullest advantage.
The naval brigade, which landed at
Durban, arrived on the scene toward
the end of the tight, and Immediately
brought their heavy guns into play.
Their practice was magnificent. At the
fourth shot the enemy's 40-pounders
had been knocked out of action.
The town is now freed from appre
hension of bombardment. Through
out the engagement the Boers held
their ground with courage and ten
acity, and, considering the Intensity o
our artillery fire, they must have suf
fered severely.
The Lady-smith engagement Is disap
pointing to the British public, as again
revealing tactical skill of an unex
pectedly high order on the side of the
Boers. In addition to the possession of
a number of heavy guns, the transport
of which causes wonderment hero,
they have available marvelous ability.
Unless commanded by skillful Euro
pean officers, it is hardly considered
probablo that Boer farmers would have
assumed a feigned position, as they
evidently did. In front of the right
column, with tho intention of retreat
ing from it to their real line of de
fense and of Inducing the British to at
tack over a Ore swept zone.
The special dispatches describing the
engagement again fail to confirm Gen
eral White's official account that the
Boers were pushed back several miles.
When It is considered that the censor
ship was very severe, the only con
clusion that can be arrived at is that
the action was extremely inconclusive.

New York, Oct. 31. Over 29 miles
of the Atlantic ocean, over housetops,
church spires, towering office build
ings, the Marconi electrical ripples
successfully carried and dropped mes
sages between two moving warships
yesterday. The naval test at sea prov
ed that within a radius of 21 miles
messages can be transmitted by wire
less telegraphy with all the accuracy
and precision of an ordiuary land line.
It also proved that hills, high build
ings, wires and wind currents do not
interfere in the slightest degree with
the transmission of messages.

David Dugmns lives in the town of
Jones, Ohio County, Kentucky. From
there he writes :
"When I began taking Dr. Pierce's Golden
Medical Discovery, I had nervous or general
debility of three years' duration. I took
three bottles of the DU- Jp' covery.' During
the time I was tak
ing it rnr slcen
became more re
freshing and 1 gain
ed fifteen rjounds
In welirht. and also
gained strength every
dav. It has been six
months since I took the
medicine and 1 sUU
good health."
When a man jrcts
run-down it is hard work
to run him up again unless
the whole condition of his
system ii first changed.
That is wh-t the "Golden
Medical Discovery" does
for him. It begins by re
moving from his dicestive
system all poisonous, effete matter. It
gives tone to his stomach, activity to his
liver, cleanliness to his bowels. While
tliis work is going on the "Discovery"
also manifests its potency through the
blood and nerves. It fills the blood with
rich, red corpuscles and sends them vig
orously circulating all over the body to
soothe and nourish the tired, abused,
screeching nerves.
When a man has nervous prostration
it isn't his nerves that are wrong. It's
his blood. Bad blood comes from bad
digestion bad stomach, bad liver, bad
kidneys. Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical
Discovery will put all these organs in
good order. "Golden Medical Discov
ery " contains no alcohol in any form. It
is entirely free from opium and other
narcotics and contains neither sugar nor
syrup which are injurious to some stom
achs. Without any of these ingredients
it retains its pleasant taste and healing
qualities in any climate and under all
conditions.
Don't let a careless or dishonest medi
cine seller cheat you out of your health
by giving you a substitute.
