THROUGH NY OTHSK '1A1LY rt'BMCATIO.V FRIDAY. OCTOBER 27, 1809. OUR COUNTRY : First. Last and Forever. m The Republicans Can Win. The time lias come now for every Republican to be up and doing in order that the party vote at the coming election, now bo near at hand, be made as Inre as possible. In the opinion of careful political observers the Republicans of this county never hud a better chance to win than they have this year, but the danger of over-confidence always looms up. We sincerely trust, however, that on this occasion no Republican will underestimate the value, not only of his own vote, but. of his personal effort to add something to the grand total. If the all realize the value- of this the majority for each and every one of the candidates -will be of im posing proportions. Then each will be iu a position to enjoy the fruits of victory. The Republicans have a uniformily strong county tioket, every candidate being fitted for the office to which he aspires, headed by D. C. Henning for Judge. G. A. Doerflinger will make a splendid treasurer. He is a gentle man of distinction as well as ubility and will make a most courteous and obliging public official. It is recog nized as the proper time to elect two Republicans as County Commission ers, and with thjs idea among the people of every political affiliation it is safe to say that Frank R. Kantner aud Horace Reber will occupy the Commissioners1 office during the next three years. For Prqtlionotary we have a popular and able candidate in the person of W- A. Leib, and like wise a faithful official in Register F. C. Reese. In the candidate for Recorder the miners deem it a pleasure to vote for Emanuel Jenkyn, and he has the support of the business element as well. Charles E. Berger, the candi date for District Attorney, is pledged to reform that office, something the people have demanded for several years. The name of JohnT. Schoener is known in every section of the county, and it is safe to say he will be re-elected Clerk of the Courts. Fred. Ahrensfleld, nominated for Poor Director, completes one of the strongest tickets placed before the people of this county in recent years. With tliis splendid ticket in the field and with an harmonious and active county organization, the re sults of the election should exceed the most sanguine expectations. The fact that the presidential election comes on next year should arouse every Republican voter to make as good a showing as possible this fall. ) We should urge upon the Republi cans of the county to get down to work now. Every man can devote a small part of his time to the perform ance of a duty in behalf of the con tinued prosperity of the nation. Be gin work now and keep it up until the election, now only a few days off. Republican prosperity is now with us. It struok all sections of the country before the anthracite region felt its welcome effects, but it is here at last and every coal operation in this region is working to its fullest capacity, considering the scarolty of cars. Every colliery within a radius of 13 miles of Shenandoah is working steadily while all of them are under going vast improvement, many new workings are being developed, in which means the increasing of the present output. Mrs. Mary Jane Colthar, aged 45 years, of Bunker Hill, Ills., whose husband died two years ago, leaving her a farm and $2,000, is penniless in this city, having been rob bed of $4,075 by a New York confidence man. Her story has been' verified by the Rochester police. Two months ai?o Mrs. Colthar, by a letter of Introduction through an agency, began a correspondence with James Monroe. A few weeks later, by appointment, they met In Indianapolis, and the same afternoon were married, The following day they started, to gether with Mrs. Colthar'a 11-year-old daughter, for New York to witness the Qewey day celebration. Before go ing, however, Mrs. Colthar placed a $2,000 mortgage on the farm and drew $2,100 from the bank. The trio arrived in Rochester a few1 days ago, and Monroo proposed to en gage in the drug business and pre vailed upon his wife to loan him $4, 075 and started for Now York, osten sibly to purchase stock for the store. Ho has not been seen since. On Wed nesday Mrs. Colthar received a letter from him, in New York, saying he bad been robbed and advising her to re turn to Bunker Hill. Mrs. Colthar has found employement as a nurse here. A Until of 1 oil urn For Mr, Cross. Connells vllle still suffers from the forest flrea on Chestnut hill. Yesterday olectrlo lights had to be burned in all the of fices and houses, as the sun was com pletely shut out. Wednesday night tho llames, ienplng ten feot high, camo down Solsson Park and threatened tho store building of tho South Connolls vllle Merchandise and Supply com pany at South Connellsville. A largo forco of mon fought tho fire for sev oral hours. A row ot houses on tho outskirts of town was threatened and the people remained up" all night, keep ing tho llames back. A Llgonlor dispatch says: Mrs. James D. Love, of Fort Palmer, had n frightful experience on Tuesday with tho forest flro now raging on Chestnut Illdge. She was on her way over the ridge when the flamos came sweeping toward the road a quartor of a mile wldo. Her horse becamo unmanage able, and tho deuso smoke almost suf focated her. By extraordinary efforts sho managed to escapo tho rush of the flames. Shortly after her escapo from the fire the road over whioh she pass ed, being covered with six inches of leaves, was all ablaze. At Blalrsvllle tho public schools are closed on account of the dense smoke that illls the town from tho fierce Arcs raging in tho forests. The children could not study for the choking smoke, nnd besides, the excitement over the fires is too great. Tho whole country for 12 miles round about Greonsburg is enshrouded In dense smoko emanating from the forest flrea on Chestnut Ridge. Tho Bell telephone lino to Ligoner has been damaged by falling timber. The los3 to timber owners Is very large. Tho farmers thus far havo been able to save their homes, but tho worst fears are felt. Fires are burning in the mountains on all sides of Johnstown. A pall ot smoke has hung over tho city for sev eral days. The light wind Wednesday saved much valuable property between here and Scalp Level, as the farmers had time to "lire back" on all sides. Flames are sweeping the woods on both sides the Allegheny and Negro ranges in the vicinity of Meyorsdale, and great damage is being done to tim ber, fences, etc. Smoke hangs over the town in dense clouds. Word reach ed thero yesterday that at a point on the National pike near Pocahontas dwellings, saw mills and barns are menaced by the flames, and that con tinuous fighting is necessary to pre vent their destruction. LOSSES FltOM FOHEST FIItES. T.nnd Commissioner Ilot'iiinn Snys Twenty Million Dollnrs Annually. Washington, Oct, 27. The annual report of Commissioner Hermann, of the general land ofllce, shows a grand total of 929,308,008-acres -of 'unappro priated and unreserved public lands in the United States. The disposals of public lands during the fiscal year show an Increase of 728.51G' acres, as compared with the aggregate of the previous year. The total cash receipts of the service increased $792,142 dver last year. The commissioner makes a num ber of recommendations. Protection against forest fires is especially urged. It Is estimated that the average yearly loss from this cause Is not les than $20,000,000. The proper utilization ot the grazing lands on the public domain also Is urged, and it is pointed out that so long as the laws require mlllmcn and other lumbermen to pay a fair price to the government for timber supplies drawn from public lands there should be an equal charge levied on the grazing products of public lands.
