London, Oct. 26. The war ofrke re
turns' show that the total llrltlsh
caflualtlas alnee the beginning of hos
tilities in the Transvaal reach 587, 18
officers having been killed and H
wounded, and 76 men kilted and Ait
wounded. There are 13 unaccounted
for. This total, however, does not In
clude the Bquadton of the eighteenth
HiiflMrs, which .went astray near Dun

Fuslloers. Tho report of heavy losses
sent from Hletfonteln came as an tin
plpAttant HuriirUe, as General White's
telegram to tho war office on Tuesday
gave tlio Impression that there was
merely a brush.
A dispatch to The Dally Telegraph
from Ladysmlth, dated Monday, says:
Thirty of the Eighteenth Hussars, who
were sent from Qiencoe to intercept
the retreat ot the lloera from islands
laagte, were cut off by tho enemy. Un
der Sergeant Baldrey they brilliantly
fought their way across the Illggars
berg, the enemy pursuing and firing
nt them at a range of 300 yards along
the passes. They arrived here at 10

with a party, was driven back to Qlon
coe. Tho Dally Mall has the following
from Pletermarltzburg, Natal, dated
Oct. 23: The proclamation of martial
law throughout Natal has given great
satisfaction. Among the Boer prison
ers at Ladysmlth aro Wewltt Hamar.
member of the rand for Barberton, aud
Dr. Van, Leggole, public prosecutor at
Heldolborg. Among tho killed was
Mr. De Jong, secretary of the Trans
vaal educational department. It is
now expected that General Jan Kock,
the Boer commander, who was report
ed dead from his wound, will recover.
General White gave him the option of
being taken to Pretoria or remaining
at Ladysmlth, and ho chose the latter.
A delayed dispatch from Ladysmlth
says: The Boer wounded and pris
oners aro still coming In, and the for
mer are receiving every attention.
General Ben Vllijoen is wounded and a
prisoner.
Sluce It Is practically certain that
General Yule has now affected a Junc
tion with General White, and as both
are now In a position of safety, con
jecture concerns Itself chiefly with tlio
manner of General Yule's retreat from
Dundee. That It was hasty Is evident.
Was It disorderly? Was any consider
able camp equipment abandoned? Was
there any fighting on the way? Such
questions, and others like them, the
publio Is anxiously asking. Since the
receipt of General White's curious 11 rat
description of the Ladysmlth light, in
which the British lost a hundred men,
little reliance can be placed on the
official dispatches. While the conceal
ment of the facts regarding General
Yule's retreat can be amply Justified
on the ground of keeping the intelli
gence from the Boers, the hiding of tho
news respecting the Hussars and Kusll
eers, who were apparently captured In
the battlo at Glencoe, is severely crit
icized, no Intimation even having been
given that the officers were missing.
The British cruisers Furious, Pelorua
and Pactolus sailed from Queenslown
yesterday afternoon en route to Capo
Clear, where they will meet eight bat
tleships and two cruisers of the chan
nel squadron, from the north of Ire
land. The fleet will then proceed os
tensibly to Gibraltar, but it Is thought
that possibly the fleet's destination Is a
Spanish or Portuguese port, as tho
vessels have taken out bills of health
from the consuls of these countries.
Dispatches from the continent to Tho
Dally Mall say that the French fleet
has received Instructions to watch the
movements of tho British Mediter
ranean squadron, and that the Italian
fleet is under orders to concentrate
In tbe Bay of Spezla.
Although news has arrived that
General Sir William Penn Symons Is
doing well, there Is no Indication as to
his whereabouts. It is presumed that
he Is at Dundee, in tbe hands of tho
Boers.

London, Ky.,Oct.J. Three, ompanle
of militia have been requeued from
Governor Bradley pending the trial of
the Griffiths and Chadwells for the
recent killing of the Philpots Judge
Hversole has made a statement about
witnesses being afraid to appear, and
it is thought that troops will be se
cured, the same as for the Baker trial
Even with the troops present It Is
probable that there will be a motion
for a change of venue.
The grand Jury Impanneled at Man
chester at the term ofr court which
began Monday has a big task before it.
There are 12 murders, besides the as
sassination of Tom Baker, to be In
vestigated. Yesterday the Jury re
turned true bills against Sol, Jim and
Tom Griffin, charging them with th-i
murder of Deputy Sheriff Wash Tucker,
and Kddy and Floyd Chadwell, charg
ing them with complicity In the crime.
Eddy Chadwell confessed that the plot
was made and executed by the Grif
fliiB to revenge the advantage Thacher
had given the Philpots by his testi
mony agalnBt the Griffins after the bat
tle of July 17, In which four Griffins
and one I'hilpot were killed The
town Is full of witnesses and feudists.
The man who has lost a
leg on the field of battle
may find a fairly service
able substitute in a crutch
or a wooden leg, but the
man whose lungs have
been invaded by the dead
ly germs of consumption
mus. act promptly or give
up all hope.
There is no substitute for
j a destroyed lung, and there
is no nope tor lungs mat
are crippled, save in Dr. Pierce's Golden
Medical Discovery. Although sweet to the
taste it contains no syrup or sugar, which
so often disagrees with the dyspeptic atom
ach. It contains no alcohol to inebriate
or create morbid craving for stimulant.
It is the only known medicine that, acting
through the blood, will build new and
healthy lung tissues. It builds up the
lungs because it builds up tbe whole body.
It endows a man with tbe appetite of a
football player. It puts
strength and muscle into
the stomach and intestines,
and causes the digestive
juices to flow freely. It
fills the blood with the
elements that build up
every organ and tissue of
the body. It turns dis
eased lung tissue into
healthy tissue by aiding
nature in her own process
of tearing down and re
building. It cures bron
chitis, weak lungs, bleeding from lungs
and lingering coughs. It prevent con
sumption by curing the weakness that
leads up to it. Honest druggists do not
offer substitutes, and urge them upon you
as "just as good." Below is one of the
thousands who have testified to these facts.
Abram Freer. Esq., of Rockbridge, Greene Co.,
Ills., writes: "My wife had a severe stuck of
pleurisy and lung tlouble; the doctors gave her
up to die. She commenced taking Or Pierce's
Golden Medical Dlscorcry and she began to im.
Srove from the first dose. By the time she hud
iken eight or ten bottles she was cured, and it
was the cause of a large amount being sold here.
I think the 'Golden Medical Discovery' Is the
best medicine In the world for lung trouble My
wife Is now using the Favorite Prescription
&ir 'turn of life. '
