It Is learned that previous to the Btnrtlne of the train Marlbogo tele phoned Vryburg asking tnat tne train, be sent up, as nil was quite sare. Tiio operator nt Vryburg recognized the voice as that of a European storo clerk. In vlow of the subsequent ro- port that the Uoers woro removing the rails, It Is believed tho lloers com pelled the clerk to speak through the telephone. The nearest Boor command to Vry burg Is laagered north of Schwelzr renck, 20 miles distant and two miles insldo the Transvaal. The commando sent a message to the Vryburg railway station that If the delivery of three wagonloads of meal and two of sugar received n week ago wero refused tho Boers would send COO men to take them. A dlsoatch from Durban says: Tho general offlcor commanding at Lady' smith Issued forth on Friday morning with a strong flying column, and oc upled a position covering Ladysmith. Ho recounoltered for tho enemy, who liowed no disposition to advance. They are reported to be Inside the Berg at tho foot of Tlntwa Pass In force, with a second command at Ollvlors Hook. The troops have re turned to quarters. It Is reported from Glencoo that a large commando believed to be Free state Boers, under Commandant VII Joen, Is at the foot ot Bothas Pass, one and one-half miles on the Natal side of the border. The Transvaal flag has been hoisted at CharleStown, and Commandant Vll loen has sent a message to Newcastle aylng the Boers will hoist the Trans vaal flag there on Saturday, but that the people need not be afraid, as every thing the Boers take will be paid for, They want to slaughter cattle. Few people are left In Newcastle, includ ing women and children. A Cape Town dispatch says: The Modder River station master reports that firing has beon heard In the di rection of Kimberley, and the station master at Belmont telegraphs that a force of Boors is advancing south' ward. "When tho pilot engine was derail ed," said Flowerdew, "we spent a half hour trying to replace It on the tracks. Then tho Boers commenced firing, and several men were wounded. The firing was kept up all night, but without effect. The Boers were careful to con centrate their fire upon the engines, so as to save the armored carriage and ammunition trucks. At dawn they commonced to bombard the cars. I escaped by crawling a mile and a half on my belly In the sand. When both engines were destroyed Captain Nes bitt exhibited flags of truce, but the Boers continued their firing for an other quarter of an hour. There Is no doubt that all the others on the train are prisoners, and that the carriage and the ammunition in tact fell into tho hands of the- Boers. Another dispatch says: The Boera cut the railway at Belmont, have seized tho Spyfonteln railway station and constructed fortified earthworks. There nro strong defending forces at Modder Bridge and the Orange river brldgo. The object of these energetic opera tions is believed to be the capture ol Cecil Rhodes. Adalbert W. Cox, for several years prior to Oct. 1 a mombor of the Washington pollco force, and Ktta WIUIamH, a young wo man with whom he lived, were arrest ed yesterday morning by Detectives Miller and Peck charged with the lar ceny of $ 100 from James A. Stewart, CC yoars of age, and for a long time a clerk In the general land office. Back of this formal charge, accord ing to the police, is it most remarkable story. Stewart disappeared from his boarding house Sept. 6, nnd for four weeks on unavailing search was made for him. Ilo was finally found In the attic nt tho Iioubo whore Cox and the Williams woman lived in a stnte of col lapse and almost demented from the effects of drugs which It Is alleged had been adlmlBtcrcd to him by the pair under nrrest. Stewart was taken to tho hospital, and though at first his life hung by a thread, ho rocovorea in about ten days. Stowart Is a widower, with a mar ried daughter Jiving In Annapolis, Md., and roomed alone In Washington. Ho left his rooming place Sept. G to make a call, and for weeks no trace of him could be found. Finally the pollco gained a clew by learning as tho re sult of Inquiry at the local banks that he had $375 on deposit with tho Wash ington Loan and Trust company. All of this amount save J10, they ascer tained, had boen drawn out on checks payable to bearer, signed by Stewart and endorsed by Adelbert W. Cox. Tho first checks were clearly written, but the latter ones were In a weak and al most Illegible hand. Cox had explain ed this at the trust company's office by saying the old man was rapidly falling in health. With this clew the detectives found Stewart In the garret of a house whero Cox lived. He had had hardly any food for a month. He said he had called on Cox and the Williams wo man, who formerly boarded where he did, on Sept. 6. They sent him out for some liquor, nnd after that he remem bered things only In a vague way. On his statement the police nrrested Cox and his paramour on a charge of lar ceny, pending Investigation and con sideration of tho making of more seri ous charges. Both prisoners secured bail in 1,000 each.' Cox was compelled to resign from the police force a short time ago be cause of his relations with the Will iams woman and a suit for divorce brought by his wife. He denies having held Stewart a prisoner. Cox says that Stowart went to Atlantic City in Sep' tember with two women and about $00 In cash, and when he returned he said he had been robbed and beaten at the seashore. At Stewart's request he was permitted to use a room In the house where he (Cox) lived, and was cared for by Miss Williams. Stewart, Cox says, appeared to be afraid his where abouts would be ascertained by rem tlves. All the money drawn from the bank In Stewart's name, he said, was given to him. I also had dimness of sight and impaired memory. I had soells that when I would try to speak I couldn't think of the words I wanted to say, but would say something else. I have im- rjroved. oh. so much, and Dr. Tierce's med. iclnes have done the good work. It has been about a year since I commenced, to use the medicines. My health has been improving slowly but snrely. We cannot expect a disease that has been coming on for years to be cured in a few days. It any lady, suffering as I have, will write to Dr. R. V. Pierce, at riuffalo. N. Y.. and get his advice and use his medicines according to directions, a cure will surely result." Most dealers in medicine sell Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescription. There is no other medicine that is "the same" or just as good." Don't accept a suustltute. 2 Weekdays 913 am. 4 10. fimni,,. Mnnrf... -Chestnut St., 9 13, South St., 9 u in.
