Tho dearth of news slnco yesterday afternoon from tho Cape, on which nil attention is rlvot tcd, Is poorly compensated for by tho mass of minor details published con corning tho preparations for tho dis patch of tho army corps and specula tion as to tho length and character of the debates when parliament meets. In official circles there is said to be approhonslon that the radicals will offer protracted opposition to the gov ernment's policy In South Africa, which will possibly mako prorogation and Christmas near neighbors. Lord Salisbury's whip to tho lords. Issued last night, says parliament will deal with matters of gravo moment. The latest dispatch from Lourenzo Marques, relating to the chaBlng of the the steamer Quelph by tho cruiser Philomel, caused some stir, especially as It was announced that tho Quelph had landed at Durban 414 cases of am munition for tho Doers. There is a pretty general feeling that ammuni tion ought not to bo allowed to bo fur warded. The Poll Mall Gazette, rs- ferriug to the matter, says: "There is some hope that the am munition will be seized at Durban, as Natal possesses a ministry whose loy nlty Is unquestioned. Had not the Filipinos been given arms by Ameri cans with which to fight Spain, Gen eral Otis would long ago have been enjoying his ease at home. Similarly with the" Boers, we may have to pay heavily In blood for the apathy tho Cape government has exhibited in this matter." Lord wantage, president of the Brit ish Red Cross society, will shortly is sue an appeal for contributions to aid In the work ot the society, which, he says, will provide two hospital railway trains and a hospital ship. The Duke of Westminster and Lord Wantage have given 1,000 each, and Baron Rothschild has raised 11,000 among his friends. Some indication of the war office estimate of the duration of the cam paign is given by the fact that the au thorltles have contracted for eight months' supply of bread and other military requisites rendered necessary by the absence of the bulk of the army service corps, whom the war oOico thus evidently calculates will be at home again by the beginning of May. It appears that although the war office culled up 25,000 reservists, only the pick of them, some 5,000, will bp retained with tho colors. Tho author! ties nro pleased at the application of a number of reservists belonging to the unmobllized classes who are volunteer lng for foreign service. The war of fico announces that wives of reservists will 'get six pence and each child two pence dally -while the husbands and fathers are retained with the colors. The scarcity of news from South Af rica appears to be due to a heavy block on the telegraph llnesi which may mean that the lines are occupied by official dispatches, and that nego tiations are being actively carried on From Durban it is announced that no code messages will be accepted for any part of South Africa without the pro duction of the codes. The Dally News this morning pub lishes the report of an interview with Bertram Mltforu, the South African novelist, who spent 25 years among tho Capo Dutch, in which Mr. MItiord predicts that victory will only be at tained by the British after a long, bloody and costly war. He says: "Tho Boers will fight like devils. The Jame son raid roused them, and ever slnco they have been preparing for war and practicing shooting, and they will re sist to the bitter end. I don't believe the Boers will incite the natives against England, but it is impossible to say what the natives will do. The Basutos are loyal to the queen, but hate the Froo State. Though It would be a bad thing for white supremacy if the Basutos were to rise and con quer the Free State, yet It would be hardly possible to prevent them. The Swazls are equally bitter against the Transvaal, and it would need little en couragenienl to lead them to attack the republic. I don't think there Is any danger from the Zulus, but the Matabele and the Nashonas might try to repeat the horrors of 1896. All tho published estimates of the fighting strength of the Boers are exaggerated It does not exceed 15,000 at the out sido." Advices from Pretoria say tho Netherlands railway management as serts that over 800 carriages and trucks belonging to the Transvaal are now In the British colony. According to these advices the burghers are still arriving at Sandsprult, and It Is esti mated that 13.000 are now concen trated there. They are becoming very much dissatisfied because of their In activity, and heavy rains and bitterly cold weather render the conditions very trying for horses and men. President Krugor, in the course of an Intervlow yesterday, said he re garded the situation as very grave, and considered it very difficult to pre diet coming events. The landing of British reinforcements In Natal, he said, did not trouble him, as he had full faith In the Almighty. President Kruger Is celebrating his 75th birthday today. Last November Mr. Joseph James, painter, of 325 W. Pearl St., Indianapo lis, Iud., was at death's door with quick consumption. Wasted to a skeleton; his lungs n mass of ulceration; his death was hourly awaited by his doctor and family. He was kept in a constant stupor with opium. A friend, thinking to relieve his terrible cough, gave hint a bottle of Brazilian Halm. Seeing its wonderful efftct, the doctor advised Hs continued use. Mr. James soon after dismissed Ins doctor, and depended on the Halm alone. His recovery was rapid and complete, and in February he returned to work. His lungs are sound, and his weight greater than at nuy time in his life. His recovery is regarded as almost a miracle. COMMA nACILUJS. Chicago's great Auditorium never hold a creator gath ering than last night, when the Chi cago day ban a net was held within Its walls under the auspices ot the fall festival committee. The groat stage. pon which 1.000 noonle con easily find standing room, had been enlarged and n great lloor built out over the seats ot the parquet, quadrupling tho lloor Rpace or the stage. President Mc Klnley, who was the gueet of honor, sat nt a raised tablo on the right of Melville K. Stone, tlio tonstmaster. Other distinguished guests wero nt tho same table, among them being Vice President Don ignaclo Mnrlscal f Mexico, I'remler Wilfrid Lnurler of Canada, General John C. Illack, Gov ernor John It. Japanese Mlnlstor Jutaro Komura nnd Senators Mason, Allison, McMillan, McEnory, Penrose and Cullom. Tho opening hour of tho banquet was set for 6 o'clock, but tho streets were so densely packed by tho great throng that had come down to witness tho laying of the corner stone of tho new federal building and the afternoon pa rade nnd remained In groat part to see the parade of the evening that It was with difficulty one could mako his waj nlong the streets, and as a consequence It was nearly an hour later than that originally set when tho banquet was In full blast. The material part of the banquet oc cupied two hours, and It was nearly 10 o'clock when Mr. Stone rapped for order, nnd brought the Intellectual por tion ot the program to the front In an eloquent address. He was followed by Governor Tanner, Mayor Harrison, Senator McCulIom, President McKln ley. Premier Lnurler of Canada, Vice President Mariscal of Mexico, Secre tary Long, D. 11. Henderson and Gen eral Thomas M. Anderson. Secretary Long evoked thunderous of npplnuse by his tribute to tho unknown heroes. He said In part: You cheer for the mon behind the guns; you give swords and banquets hero and there to an admiral and both most richly deserve the tribute but remember that all up and down the line there are Individual? whose names never come to our ears, or if so. are already half forgotten, who have earn ed unhiding laurels. No man In the navy baa rendered such service, how ever great, that others were not ready to fill the place aud do as well. Tho navy is full of heroes unknown to fame. Who repeats tho names of the young officers who pleaded for Hob son's chnnce to risk his life In tho hull and hell of the Merrlmac? Who men tions the scores of seamen who beg ged to be of the Immortal seven who were his companions In that forlorn hope? In tho long watch before San tlago the terror of our gTeat battle ships was tho two Spanish torpedo boat destroyers. Yet when the great battle came It was the unprotected Gloucester, a converted yacht, tho former plaything and pleasure boat of a summer vacation, which without hesitation or turning attacked these demons of the sea and sunk them both. I have always thought it the most heroic nnd gallant Individual In stance of fighting during the war. It was as if some light clad youth, with no defense but his Bword, threw him gelt into the arena with armored gladiators and by bis very dash and spirit laid them low. And yet who has givon a sword or spread a feast to that purest flame ot chivalrous hero ism, Richard Walnwrlght?" Premier Laurier, In tho course ot his address, made this referonce to international disputes: "I am proud to say. In the presence of the chief executive of the United States, that It Is the belief of the Can adlan government that we should make a supreme effort to better our relations and make tho government of President McKlnley and the present government of Canada, with the assent of Great Britain, so to work together as to remove all causes of dissension be tween us. And regarding the commls slon which sat first in the old city of Quebec and sat next in Washington. We met a stumbling block In tho Question of the Alaska frontier. Well let me say here and now, tho commis sion couldn't settle that question and referred it to their particular govern ments, and they are now dealing with it. May I bo permitted to say here nnd now that we do not desire ono Inch of your land, but if I state, how ever, that we want to hold our land, will that be an American sentiment, I want to know? Howover, though that would not be an American senti ment, though it would not be a Brit ish or Canadian sentiment, I am here to say above all my fellow country men that we want not to stand upon the oxtremo limits of our rights. We are ready to give and to take. But though we havo many little bickerings of that kind, I speak my whole mind, and I believe I speak the mind of all you gentlemen, when 1 say that after all. when we go down to the bottom of our hearts wo will find that there la between us a true genuine affection. There are no two nations today on the face ot the globe so united as Great Britain and the United States ot America." The most spectacular feature of the entire fall festival, the parade ot all nations, took place last night, and was viewed by thousands, the streets in the down town district being literally a solid mHBS of humanity for the entire length of the pnrado. The parade, In which marched representatives of 14 countries, including Germany, Vene zuela, Switzerland, Brazil, the Nether lands, Austria and Hungary, Scotland, Armenia, Asyrla, Belgium, China. Italy and the United States, included nearly thirty floats, some of them extremely beautiful and novel. The one that at tracted the most attention was the great Chinese dragon, which was ship ped hero from San Francisco for the all-nations parade. The dragon, which was nearly three hundred feet long, was carried on the shoulders of 200 men, and In Its immense jaws and nos trils we.re burnou red and green fire in quantities that lit up the parade for blocks. Among the floats were two in the Germau section, one representing the triuuiDU of music, tba other. On tho return of the privates they were as Mitilted, Stout being very roughly handled. A general fight ensued among the men. Captain Jnnea, ot Company IC, whose quarters nro next to Com pany L's, had been aroused by the clamor, and called out the guard. Private Stout was removed to the hospital, together with two others, who suffered less serious Injuries than he did. The Tribune nays: A close friend ot the Yander-l-Ilt family yestorday made the fol lowing prediction as to what the con tents of the will of Cornelius Vander bllt would prove to be: "Mrs. Van derbllt will get the Fifth avonuo resi dence and the 'Breakers' nt Newport for life, and an Income of $500,000 a year to keep them up. These houses and the Income allotted to Mrs. Van dcrbllt will at her death pass to the third son. Reginald. The five children will receive $10,000,000 apiece, and the residue ot the estate will be divided into two equal parts, ono of which will bo given to Cornelius nnd the other to Alfred Gwynne Vanderbllt. Mr. Vanderbllt was I think, fur richer than he was popularly supposed to be, and I bellevo the shares of his two oldest sous will bo over $50,000,000 nplece." The Weak Spot. When a boiler explodes carry ing death and destruction with it, every body says "Why: we thought it was strong enough: It must have had a weak spot somewhere I " When a man who has the out ward appearance of being sound and strong sudden ly falls a prey to disease, his friends exclaim: "why we thought he was all right: He must have had a weak spot somewhere." The fact is, almost everybody has a weak spot somewhere. Death and dis ease are always looking for weak spots. If your stomach or your liver won't do its proper work, if your body fails to get its full nourishment from the food you eat, and your brain loses part of the sleep it ought to have, no matter how big your frame and muscular your limbs may be, you will give out; disease will find the weak spot, and nature will give way. "I wish to say to the world that Dr. lMerce's Golden Medical Discovery has proved a great blessing to me as I firmly believe I should be In a very bad state now if I had not taken it," writes Mrs. Ellen R. Bacon, of Shutesbury, FrankUn Co., Mass., tn a courteous communication to Dr. R. V. Pierce, of Buffalo, N. Y. " Prior to September 1897, 1 had doctored for my stomach trouble for several years, going through a course of treatment without any real benefit. In Sep tember 1896, I had very sick spells and grew worse; could eat but little. I commenced in September 1897, to take Dr. Tierce's medicine and Iu a short time I could eat and work. I have gained twenty pounds In two months." This glorious "Discovery" gives the stomach and liver power to do their nat ural work regularly and completely. It makes healthy blood and steady nerves. It builds up the weak spots sound and strong. It is the only medicine that can be relied upon to accomplish this promptly and thoroughly. Constipation Is nine times In ten the begin ning and one of the fir?t symptoms of dangeroui dUeases. When this tendency Is present Dr. Pierce's Pleasant Pellets should be used in con junction with the "Discovery." EVAN J. DAVIES, Livery and Undertaking.
