New York, Oct. 7. The most Inter esting subject up for discussion at yes terday s sestilon of the Mazet Inves tigating romtnlttee was the Dewey i rade stands. Dr. Charles V. Iloborts, chief sanitary superintendent of the board ot health, submitted certain documents Bhowlng that tho Dewey stands were not constructed In a sani tary faBhlon. Dr. Roberts submitted certain documents called for In hit subpoena. The tlrst ot these read was a notification sent to Commissioner Brady, of the building department, and signed by President Murphy, setting forth that there wero no retiring rooms for women and children In thu Dewey stands, and declaring that at the time ot the centennial parade In this city tho lives ot 500 women and children were lost as tho result ot hav ing to stay for hours on tho stands without such accommodations. Stephen Dcrry, owner of one of the Dewey parade stands, testified that his partnor had settled matters by giving one inspector $5 and another Inspector $25. Mr. Berry testified that he had some trouble with the car penters on Saturday. They made a demonstration and he ran away, pur sued by tho men and calling "Police." Two policemen came up to him and said they had been sent to protect him. They took him to the Elevated station and then demanded $10. He de clined to pay, and thoy let him go away, with the excited carpenters af ter him. Tho next question brought up be fore the committee was the projected East river bridges. Attorney Moss hoped to prove that the city would bo obliged to buy out private franchises for bridge sites before tho public bridges could be constructed to the borough of Brooklyn, but this was de nied by Bridge Commissioner Shea. Peter F. Meyer, a dock commission er and partner in tho real estate busi ness with Richard Croker, created something of a scene by demanding of tho committee an immediate hearing, claiming that It was necessary for him to attend a meeting of the dock board. This was denied him, and an exchange of words followed, Mr. Meyer finally leaving the room. At the afternoon session Park Com missioner Oeorge V. Brower was be fore the committee, nnd an attemptwas made to induce him to explain troubles recently occurring in his department. He declared that he was ot revolution ary stock, and consequently would not rob the city. J. Seargeant Cram, presi dent of the dock department, when closely questioned regarding certain asphalt pavements put down by tho Uvalde Asphalt company took refuge behind the statement: "If I don't obey the law. there's the grand Jury." The day's proceedings wound up with an attempt to examine Peter P. Meyer, who had again been called Into tho room and placed on the stand. Mr. Meyer broke out with a passionate ob jection to being examined by Mr. Moss. He oven objected to "having any other reputable man examined by him." Ho said there was a matter of long stand ing between them a personal matter. Ths brought Mr. Moss to his feot. The attorney said he had been warned that the next time ho put a member of Tammany Hall on the stand his reputation would be ripped up. He as serted that he was willing to have his name blasted tomorrow if only today he could put one of them on the stand This was his reply to the threat and the warning. The examination then proceeded, the question of why Mr. Meyer voted for the Uvalde paving contracts being first taken up. Mr. Meyer was still on the stand when tho committee adjourned for the day. No Right to Ugliness. The woman who is lovely in face, form and temper will always have friends, but one who would be attractive must keep her health. If she is weak, sickly and all run down, she will be nervous and irritable. If she has constipation or kidney trouble, her impure blood will cause pimples, blotches, skin erup tions and a wretched complexion. Electric Bitters is the best medicine in the world to regulate stomach, liver and kidneys and to purify the blood. It gives strong nerves, origin eyes, smooin, vcivcty SKin, ncti com plexion. Philadelphia, Oct. 7. flttperlntend ant Wennmi, of thf Pencoyd Iron works, ot this city, and the seven skilled Iron workers who accompanied him to Kypt to erect the bridge over Attutra river. In the Soudan, arrived In New Ycrk Thursday evening or. the steamship Servla and were given a royal welcome when they rnohod tho I'encoyd works yesterday. They are looked upon as heroes by their thou sands of fellow workmen, and the whole force turned out to greet them. Work was susimnded, whistles were blown and quite a demonstration was made. The rapidity of the completion of the Atabara bridge by tne I'enroyd company has attracted the attention of the world, though Superintendent Wennaa remarked that he did not re gard the achievement as a great one. He said that If he could have had a big force of American helpers to assist him In the erection of the bridge. In stead of the convicts, the only help available, he could have finished the ork even quicker than It was dono. The English government wanted a steel bridge built for Its military road in Egypt, and wanted It built in a hurry. No English or European con structors could lie found with capacity or suRH'lent energetic action to un dertake the work, and the Pencoyd company took the contract on Kelt. G last. Tho structural parts of the seven spans, each 160 feet long, weigh ing 650 tons, and the cylinder caps, weighing 64 tons, were rapiuly pre pared and were shiped from Now York April 20. The material arrived at Its destination In the latter part of May. Superintendent Wennas and his Beven skilled assistants were ou hand. anu in two mouths after their arrival the completed structure was turned over to the English government, an almost unprecedented piece of en gineering enterprise. What a brute I That is what Is said of the man who abuses hit horse, but the man who abuses his body finds help and en couragement on every side. His mother mattes uira Borne of that good old fashioned mince pie, his daughter gives him hot bis- cuit, and his wife follows with deli cious ice cream. Presently the man has that unpleasant feeling in the stomach which is the beginning of a dyspeptic con dition. His nerves become unstrung, and he makes mother, wife and daughter mis erable with his moodiness. His liver is torpid. His blood is being poisoned by the impurities which the broken-down or. pans are incapable of taking care of. He is in just the condition to receive the germs of any disease. He is a shining mark for the germs of consumption. To that dis ease too, he becomes a victim one day or another, unless saved by the use of such a remedy as Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery. This will put htm on his feet again. It is a tonic and appetizer, a blood purifier, a liver invigorator, a nerve re storer, a strengthener for the weak, a cure for weak and bleeding lungs, bronchitis, lingering cough and kindred ailments, which if neglected or improperly treated lead up to consumption. Perhaps you think no medicine can cure so many ail ments, but when you remember that all these diseases start in the stomach and nu tritive system, and that "Golden Medical Discovery" cotrects that fault or derange ment at the starting point, it isn't so strange after all that it does so much. Mrs. Ellen E. Ilacon, of Shutesbury. Franklin Co., Mass., writes: "I firmly believe I should be In a very bad state now If I had not taken Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery. Prior to September 1697, 1 had doctored for ray stomach trouble for several years, going through a course of treatment without any realbenefit. In Sep tember 1896, I had very sick spells and grew worse; could eat but little. I commenced in September 1807 to take the "Golden Medical Discovery' and in a short time I could eat and work I have gaiued twenty pounds in two mouths." EVAN J. DAVIES, Liyery and Undertaking.
