Lafayette, Ind., Oct. 6. Although the
presidential train crossed the Indiana
line after dark last night, and despite
the fact that word had been tele
graphed ahead to the effect that no
stops of any considerable length would
be made, yet large crowds had as
sembled at Fort Wayne, Peru, Logans
port and Lafayette. The president In
variably declined to favor the people
with speeches, but willingly shook
hands with as many as he could reach,
and In most cases presented to them
the memhers of the cabinet. The
crowds were invariably enthusiastic
and hearty In their grating.

Mrs. Margery MoIIugh died at her homo in
Tuman.ua, Wednesday ovenlng, from the ef
fects of a fall received three woeks ago. Sho
leaves ono son. The funeral will take placo
to-morrow morning at 10:00 a, m. Solemn
High Mass will be celebrated in St. Jerome's
Catholic church and Interment will ho made
in tho parish cemetery.
Michael Gavin, of Schuylkill Haven, who
was seriously injured at tho P. & R, stomgo
yards Monday.diod at his late home yesterday
morning. He is survived by his wifo and
two daughters.
Mrs. Ellen Rcilly died at tho home of hor
sister, Mrs. Johu II. Quiun, at Pottsvlllo, last
evening, after a week's illness from apoplexy.
Sho was attackod last week while attending
the funeral of a rolativo.
Mrs. Anna M. Daubort died nt tho Potts
vlllo hospital yesterday morning. She bad
been unconscious for 11 days. Death was
due to paralysis and rheumatism. Mrs.
Daubert ia survived by four sons, one of
them, John II., residing at Frackvillo.
Mrs. Elizabeth Schmidt, wifo of Johu
Schmidt, died at her homo in Mahanoy City
last night, aged 50 years. Three children
survive Tho funeral will take place next
Sunday afternoon.
William Heisor. of Mahanoy City, died at
seven o'clock this morning, in his "3rd yard.
His wife is his sole survivor. Tho funeral
will take place next Monday afternoon.
Tho funeral of Mrs, Annto KoldholT took
placo at Mahauoy City to-day. The remains
were taken to Hazleton for interment.

The members of the Ushers' Association
held a social gathering in their hall, corner
of Main and Lloyd streets, last night and en
tertained a number of invited guests in royal
style. Games and vocal and Instrumental
music wore tbo pastimes of the evening and
refreshments comprising coffee, sandwiches
and fruit were served. Among tho guests in

The Oliver Estate Sale.
The postponed public sale of the Oliver
Estate on North Main street was started this
morning, but after several bids had been
made the sale was again postponed by the
auctioneer, Eugene Kudcr, of Mahanoy City,
by direction of John F. Dolphin, Esq , coun
sel for the trustee, Mrs. Martha BurcblU.
tieorge M. Roads, Esq., of Pottsville, who
represents one of tho heirs, Mrs. William
Marshall, made a bid of $0,200 and Mr.
Dolphin bid $9,300. The latter bid stood
for some time, when Mr. Dolphin
announced that ho had been instructed
to withdraw it, and told the auctioneer to
continue the sale on the $9,200 bid. After
protesting against the withdrawal Mr. Roads
announced that he would withdraw the bid
he had made and substituted a bid of $8,500,
Later he withdrew that bid and substituted
another of $3,000. There was no other and
Mr. Dolphin instructed the auctioneer to
postpone the sale until the 27th Inst., at 10
a. m., by direction of the trustee, as the bid
was not oqual to the valuation of the prop
erty decided upon at the inquisition and the
terms of salo provided that the trustee had
the right to reject any bid. Mr. Roads
entered a protest against tbo postponement
and claimed the property should have been
knocked down on his bid.
The T. A. II. Societies.
Extensive preparations are being made for
tho parade of the T. A. B. Societies which
will take placo at Centralia on Tuesday,
October 10th, All the societies embraced in
this organization will participate In the par
ade which will take place at 1 p. m. Immed
iately after the parade a danco and festival
will be held In the Parochial hall, a hand
some new building just completed, and this
together with the many other amussments
will make the 10th a day of pleasure for all
in attendance.
Miners to be l'ald.
To-morrow is pay-day at Mahanoy City for
the meu employed by the Philadelphia and
Reading Coal and Iron Company. The men
of the St. Nicholas district will be paid on
Tuesday. This pay will be one of the largest
of the year, because the miners are working
full time and the rate of wages is one per
cent, higher than last month.

Mias Anna Catherine Kestner, of Reading,
and Charles W. Allen, of Tamaqua, were

Patrick Ryan, a member of the Humane
Fire Company of Mahanoy City, wag awarded
the prize of a gold headed ouuo for being the
tallest fireman in the state parade at Scran
ton yesterday. He is 5 feet 71 inches tall
and he beat his uearest competitor, a man
from Media, by 31 Inubeg. ,
