The careo, consisting of tobacco and
8.000 bales of cotton, and valued at
$250,000 to $300,000, la a total loss, and
the boat Is little hotter than a wrec.
It Is believed that the Leona, which
sailed from Galveston on Sept. 27,
caught fire at sea sevoral days ago,
since which time she has proceeded at
full speed, with battened hatches, for ,
this port. At 3:30 yesterday afternoon
the Leona came racing up East river
to hor pier, where haste was made to
debark tho passengers and open the
hatches. An hour later an army of
men was vainly fighting a flro in tho
steamer's hold. Finally tho ship was
scuttled.
As soon as the Leona made fast to
her piOr, about 4 o'olock, tho officers
of tho vessel, commanded by Captain
Wllbcr, ordered the members of the
crew to try to put out the Are In tho
hold without calling the fire depart

possible, and nn alarm of Are was Bent

playing from firs engines and six
streams from fire boats. Tho firemen

but had no accident until Saturday af

when the vessel suddenly shipped a
heavy sea and shifted her deckioad of
lumber. Sho Immediately began to
leak, and when the pumps were first
put to work she had 11 inches of wa

night thpre were seven and a hnlf feet
of water, and tho crew took to the

Tuesday morninsr, when a lifeboat was
