Hon. M. 0. Wnlsoti, John 1'. Itoelim anil

ami hennl a number of parties Intetosted. A
larce number of residents of Union and East
Union townthlrx were present, and all ap
peared to favor tho proposed chango In the
road. K C. Wagner, assistant superintendent
of the Qlrard Estate, and Supervisor
Thickens attomled the nieetltie and nppcarcd
to favor the change. Next Monday Mr.
WnEiior will accompany the viewers over the
coarse the proposed new road will take
through West Mahnnoy Township M. M.
Ilurko, Esq , wits present as attorney for the
petitioners and viewers. The old road is to
be condemned on the ground that it is
dangerous and the grade exceeds the maxi
mum of Ave degrees for mountain roads.
The act of 1807 fixed the maximum grade
at three degrees, but that act is not yet in
force, for the reason that it is not to become
operative until the sum of $1,090,000 has been
appropriated by Act of Assembly to be dis
tributed among the several townships of tho
State for the Improvement of public high
ways. The new road will be given a grade of five
degrees, or lower if possible. The old road
averages twelve degrees. Tho proposed route
which the viewers will likely report will rim
along the mouutain side, below the present
road and cross the Mambeck road about half
a mile west of whero the present llraudou
vilte road crosses it, and to the east of the
Shenandoah Water Company's dams and con
nect with the present road somewhere near
tho dirt plane aud the Kehley Iiuu colliery.
It is claimed the new road will increase
travel to and from lirandonvillo.
1'OLITICAI. POINTS.
Can any one name the Democratic candi
date for 1'oor Director? .
Tho Republican League of Clubs will meet
in Harrisburg to-morrow.
The Republicans of Shenandoah havu
donned their fighting clothes.
If you want to voto in November see that
your taxes arc paid by Saturday.
Just keep your eye on Horace Kcber, the
Republican candidate for Commissioner. Ho
will knock the Democratic strongholds silly.
Tho past week has developed more ac
tivity on the part of the candidates Of both
parties than has been shown at any time
heretofore during the present campaign.
The Pottsvillo Chronicle, with much shuw
of spirit, denies that Al. Depew, the Demo
cratic candidate for Treasurer, runs a com
pany store. Who said he did?
Where, oh where, is Uncle Jimmy Miuogua
in the present campaign ? It looks very much
as if Sheriff Toole has "served a writ" upon
the fighting Ashland attorney.
Shenandoah's two representatives on tho
Democratic ticket, Higgins and Brennan, are
on the jump almost continuously and aro
putting up an active canvass.
Admiral Dewey doesn't seem to think the
United States government is making auy
mistake in making its control of the Philip
pines complete and permanent.
It is said Candidate McLaughlin is not
indulging in as many jokes as ho is want
to do. lie finds that the people are serious
in their determination to elect Charles Berger
tho next District Attorney.
John T. Shoencr, candidate for Clerk of
the Courts, Is a tower of strength to tho
ticket, because of the warm side the work
ingmcn have for him. When Mr. Shoener
was In the Legislature he secured the passage
of the Miners' hospital bill. This hospital is
located near Ashland, and has proven a great
boou to the working people.
Dr. Quaill, chairman of the Republican
County Committee, received a dispatch from
State Chairman Reeder last evening stating
that Col. James E. Barnett, Republican can
didate for State Treasurer, will visit Schuyl
kill county on Tuesday, October 10. Potts
ville, Shenandoah, Mabanoy City, Ashland,
and probably other towns will be visited.
The Democratic candidates met at head
quarters in Pottsville yesterday aud conferred
with Chairman Noonan. The latter has
arrrigued several itineraries for the candi
dates, and yesterday afternoon they stormed
the west end and wound up with a grand
pow-wow at Pinogrove. The candidates are
active, and are putting up a good fight for a
losing cause.
An important meeting of the Republican
candidates was held at party headquarters in
Pottsville this morning. The members of
the Executive Committee were present and
discussed the situation with the chairman
and the party nominees. Those of them who
have canvassed tho county confidently pre
dict the election of the entire ticket. This
bright outlook, however, will not cause tbetn
to relax their efforts and to swell the ma
jorities. Spain's Greatest Need.

in Arrests.
For a week past Policeman Michael Hcaton
has had a bouse on East Centre street under
surveillance and several times ho warned the
occupants that tbe neighbors were complain
ing about tbe place aud, unless the practices
complained of were discontinued, somebody
would get into trouble. His warnings went
unheeded and for hours last night there wero
quarrels in tho place, tho chief combatants
being a woman known as "Jersey Lily" and
one John Budell.
Policeman Hcaton got the "Lily" in tow
and she made disclosures which resulted in
tbe woman swearing out a warrant before
Justice Toomoy, chanting Budell with Inces
tous adultery. Heaton arrested Budell, who
was committed in default of bail. Budell
then swore out a warrant before tlie same
Justice charging the "Lily" with keeping a

trial at court.
In swearing out her warrant the "Jersey
Lily" gave her name as Carrie Hartwell.
