Night School Teachers Assigned.
Superintendent J. W. Cooper and the com
mittee on teachers and salaries last evening
assigned the following night school teachers
to the following buildings: Misses Cantliu
and Qraeber, to the Union street building ;
Michael Rellly and Miss Kate Flaherty, to
the old White sticet building ; Misses Lilly
Llewellyn and Mabel Barnbart, to the Main
street building ; Misses Katie Brogan and
MIIllo Boyer, to the Lloyd stmt building;
Miss Lizzie Uand, advanced grade, and Miss
Mary Wade, who will have charge of the
only school for girls, are located iu the West
street building. Miss Kate McMenamin was
assigned to the Coal street building and Miss
JIary Parkor, to Turkey Run. There are a
total of 12 night school teachers.

Colliery to Resume.
It is announced that the Chamberlain col
liery, at St. Clair, which has been closed
down since last February, will resume opera
tions on September J5tli. Many repairs
have been made to the colliery.

respondent of The Morning Post tele
graphs: President Kruger told a
prominent Boer yesterday that war
was "practically certain." Every Boer
Is now armed with a Mauser and ha3
a hundred rounds of ammunition,
strictly for future uso,twith 40 rounds
for practice. The correspondent adds:
"I am convinced that tho reports of
the Boers not being prepared are only
a pretense, and that they will strlko
a blow when it Is least expected."
The volksraad has deferred the dis
cussion of the correspondence ex
changed between the Imperial and
Transvaal governments until Monday,
when a motion regarding the presence
of British troops on the Transvaal bor
der will be debated secretly.
The Johannesburg correspondent of
Tho Standard says: It Is generally
understood that there Is the strong
est Inclination in the volksraad to re
pudiate British suzerainty, A largo
section of the Boers Is strongly op
posed to a concession of the franchise
on the basis of a Ave year residence,
and the position Is still very grave.
It is reported at Aldershot that tho
First Royal Dragoons, under Lieuten
ant Colonel Bum-Murdcch, Is undor
orders to be in leadiness In the event
of hostilities In the Transvaal. Tho
regiment, which figured at Waterloo,
Balklava and Selmstapool, has not left
England since the Crimean war.

Allentown, Pa., Sept. 2,--Bralnard
Ibach was shot and instantly killed
yesterday by Mrs. Alice M. Itltter In
tho woman's room in the shopping part
of the city. Mrs. Itltter then killed
herself. Ibach was single, 32 years of
ago. Mrs. Hitter was older, and was
tho second wife of Charles F. Hitter,
from whom sho separated because of
Ibach's intimacy with her. Ibach and
tho woman had been meeting for sev
eral years. Recently ho ttVed of her
and she became jealous. When shot
Ibach was lying in bed.
