ing cablegram, dated Manila, from
Colonel J,-C. Lopor, commanding tho
Fifty-first Iowa regiment, In reference
to Wednesday's battle: "The Flfty-
flrst Iowa saw somo of tho hardest
fighting It has encountered during tho
present campaign. Our force advanced
several miles from San Fernando, wad
ing through deep mud and fighting al
most constantly, tho Filipinos retiring
in considerable confusion, but main
taining a steady fire. Tho ongagoment
was general, 6.000 of the enemy being
engaged, while General MacArthur
had, In addltlonto our roglment, tho
Ninth and Twelfth regiments and now
Thirty-sixth, part of tho Seventeenth
regiment and a cavalry troop. Our ad
vanco was assisted by tho artillery, 15
guns being employed. Ono battalion
of tho Fifty-first accompanied tho ar
tillery in a successful movement m
the direction of Moxlco, the reglmont
ndvancinu with the main body of
troons toward Angeles. Tho Ameri
can loss was severo, several killed and
about 25 wounded.

A dispatch by cable from l'once says
tho town was almost dostroyed. Al
most all tho frnino buildings are down,
tho bridge Is swept away, and there Is
no communication between the port
nnd tho city proper. The damage to
tho port la estimated at J260.000. Two
natives aro known to have been drown
ed. The records and property of the
custom house are ruined, and all thu
vessels aro ashore.

there. The loss to property Is esti

Item in the disaster. Tho courier

Ebon Swift, of tho Fifth United Stnte3
cavalry, who says:
Humacno was totally destroyed by
tho hurricane. Forty-six bodies havo
been recovered, and thero are many
more in tho debris. Eight privates of
Troop C were injured, two fatally.
Sergeant King, of tho Eleventh In
fantry, was Injured. North, a dis
charged private. Is missing. At tho
port of Humacno 18 bodies havo been
recovered. Eight hundred peoplo are
starving hero."

the men came In with the pack trains
tent out from Telegraph Creek and
Laketon by the various trading com
panlM last spring.
The unfortunates tell heartreandlng
stories of hardships endured and com
rades lost and abandoned, and strong
ly denounce the trading and trans
portation companies, as well as the
Canadian officials and newsWters that
so profusely advertised this route as
n feasible one to the Klondike gold
fields. To outward appearances these
men certainly give evidence of the
awful suffering undergone since leav
ing Edmonton 18 months ago. Most
of them are sickly looking, with un
kempt lieards and greasy clothes pic
tured of physical and financial wrecks.
Several have grown gray and bear
marks of scurvy. A few havo Just
enough money to reach Seattle or
Victoria, but the majority are with
out funds. Many had narrow escapes
from starvation along the trail.
The last reports brought to Laird
Post were that many were dying of
scurvy and hunger, it Is estimated
that there are 30 or 40 sufferers at
Telegraph Creek awaiting the next
trip of the boat. The sick that had to
be carried on stretchers had not yet
reached Olenora when the Strathcona
: 'led. Several starvation cases are re-P-iited.
