WnBhlngton, Aug. 0. Tho stnto de
nartmont has rccolvcd from the Italian
authorities a copy of tho complete re
port maao by tlio Marquis Romano,
tocrotary of tho Itnllnn embassy here,
on his personal Investigation of tho
locont lynching of nvo Italians at
Talulnh, La.
Tho reports presonts tho nffalr In n
lorlous light. As a whole, tho Itnllan
authorities view tho matter Of the
lynching as ono of unusual atrocity,
and without tho mitigating circum
stances which had been urged In pre
vious affairs of this kind.
In describing tho first affray, which
led up to tho lynching. Marquis Rom
ano's report states that Dr. Hodges
was tho first to draw his weapon, and
that not until ho had fired ono shot
and was about to fire tho second ono
at Charles Dlfata, who was at that
tlmo prostrato on tho ground, did tho
brother, Joo Dlfata, flro his shotgun
from tho store near by. This last shot,
It Is pointed out, was In defenso of the
fallen brother, and was not a wanton
attack upon Dr, Hodges, Tho circum
stances leading up to tho affray arc
described In detail. According to this
account Charles Dlfata was alono when
Dr. Hodges passed. Thofo Is no effort
mado In tho report to obscure tho fact
that Charles Dlfata made the first of
fensive overture But It Is contended
that this was not accompanied by tho
uso of firearms, or even a movoment
to draw them. It Is said, however, that
Charles Dlfata upbraided Dr. Hodges
In an offensive way for having killed
an animal and acompanted this by a
blow of tho fist. Then, It Is stated, Dr.
Hodgos shot at Dlfata. Whether or not
tho shot took effect It was not posslblo
for tho Italian authorities to loarn, as
the bodies of tho men, after bolng
lynched, wero disfigured and disposed
Of. But at all events It is stated that
Charles Dlfata was on the ground fol
lowing the shot from Dr. Hodges'
weapon.
Then followed tho lynching of these
two Italians, Joe Dlfata and Charles
Dlfata. The mob took them before they
had been arrested.
Up to this point, according to the
Italian report, only these two Italians
had figured In the affair. The report
goes on to stato that throughout tho
occurrence tho three other Italians
Frank Dlfata, Joseph Foduclo and
John CoramI wero In another street
and did not know what was occurlng.
It Is stated that they did not take
part In the attack on Dr. Hodges, and
that they did not oven know of It until
some tlmo after, when the local of
ficers camo to arrost thorn. This arrest
was accomplished and tho' threo Ital
ians wero actually placed In jail. The
report then brings out that the mob,
having already lynched Charles and
Joe Dlfata, turned their attention to
tho threo Italians under arrest.
Two of these men, Joseph Feduclo
and Frank Dlfata, were first taken
from the officers and lynched. Subse
quently, and some little time after
ward, tho mob returned and took John
Ceraml and lynched him. In this cir
cumstantial way the report brings out
that the mob mado three distinct
movements against tho Italians, and
that there was sufficient time for the
blood to cool and for tho angor of tho
lynchers to abato after thoy had dis
posed of the first two men. Particular
importance Is laid upon this feature.
The full report has been forwarded
to the Italian foreign ofllce and a copy
of It placed in tho hands of tho stato
department.
Tho report of tho special envoy and
that of Governor Foster clash at nearly
every point.

"I am glad of the opportunity to pub

remedies as I can testify from long experience.
They have kept me in splendid health, so I

that cures Grippe, so it leaves no evil effects

Toxicola is the most wonderful thing to put

corrects billiousness, tones up the nerves,
clears the complexion and purifies the blood.

The counsel for Dreyfus met yester
day, at his wife's rcsldenco, tho heads
of tho Dreyfuslto party, and consulted
on tho present aspect of tho affair.
They went there after thoy had ex

not see any possibility of repeating tho
Judgment of 1894.
Dreyfus was greatly fatigued aftor
Monday's ordeal. Ho asked anxiously
yesterday what tho press and public

opinion Is generally favorablo. This
is true. Tho representatives of na

Leading personages hero for tho trial
have much to say about tho late Gcn

In connection with Dreyfus, but Gen
eral Mercler and M. Hanotaux, former
minister of foreign affairs, refuse to
speak on tho subject. M. Hanotaux
looks dejected. It will be curious to
see whether ho and Mercler contradict
each other.
Thero seems danger that all the evl-
donce relating to foreign diplomatists
will bo given with closed doors. Tho
public trial will bo resumed on Sat

Dreyfus, a mombor of his family
says, has not yet got over his Rip Van
Wlnklo feeling. Ho was lost, as ho
put It. He remarked to his wife that
he was astonished to find himself
watched by tho whole world or Its
proxies, though ho showed no sign of
astonishment. He was thrown in a
heap by tho searching and, as ho
though, unfriendly examination by tho
prosldont of tho court martial. He had
expected mere formal proceedings.
MM. Demango and Laborl did not
prepare him for a hostile tribunal and
a scrutinizing public. Ho felt as If
x-rays were being cast upon him all
tho time ho was under public gaze. It
was as if tho Inmost thoughts of his
heart wero being peered Into. Ho Im
agined the proceedings would be only
formal, and that perhaps he might
leavo the court house to walk to his
wife's temporary homo.
His counsel wore quite right not to
dlscourago him beforehand, as his
strength is low and he Is condemned
to a diet of milk and eggs, which does
not enable him rapidly to recover his
lost strength. A full diet Just now
could not fall to bring on Bright's dis
ease. Ho was at first greatly depressed to
learn that he would be confronted with
a crowd of hostile witnesses and that
tho trial might last a fortnight or threo
weeks, or even longer. Then, steel
ing himself ho cried:
"You must prove yourself a man,
Dreyfus. You must struggle for your
honor and not glvo In until you have
cleared It onco and forever. But what
havo ypu done, Dreyfus, to make' peo
