WEDNESDAY AUGUST I), 1800.
OUR COUNTRY : First. Last and Forever.
The name of ex-Governor Pnttison
is prominently mentioned in connec
tion with the Democratic nomination
for President. Why not?
Aguinaldo'S appeal to the Powers
will hardly have the desired effect.
He should have addressed his "note"
to Uryan and other American sym
pathizers. Latest news from the ex-Congress
man: "I have heen politically ship
wrecked, quarantined, and flred from
a catapult, but you can't lose mo."
Referred to Major Finney.
Thk Hazleton Standard Is again
wrong. "We made no attempt to be
little our contemporary, but simply
drew its attention to the fact that
the Hazleton papers wore at yarlance
in their views as to the condition of
tho workingmen in that region. And
the Standard has presented no facts
to show that its contention is the cor
rect one. The Hkhaxd, in unison
with all other newspapers in the an
thracite region, would gladly welcomo
a change in the "sliding scale as now
operated," aud will advocate any
movement inaugurated by the Senti
nel to remedy tlie evil. What say
our friends at Hazleton ?
Many persons question whether the
enormous advertisements put forth
by tho big department stores in large
cities really pay their cost. If re
turns are to be measured by actual
sales of goods advertised.it may safely
be stated that such advertisements
rarely pay. Their purpose is to bring
people into the store, where other
goods displayed and skillful salesmen
will do the rest. Tho item which
brought the customer to the store
may be only a spool of thread or a
cake of soap at half price, but the
chances are against the customer
leaving the store without making
other purchases. The same principle
applies to mail-order adyertising.
The profits from the direct sales of
the goods advertised in any adver
tisement seldom pay its cost. The
profit must come from subsequent
sales, and this depends upon skillful
following up of the Inquiry the ad
vertisement brings.
Give the Credit Due.
An onthusiastio welcome has
greeted tho Pennsylvania regiment,
just returned from tho Philippines,
as it paraded through the streets of
San Francisco, savs tlie St. Louis
Globe-Democrat. "The Pennsyl
vanians are a sturdy-looking lot,"
says a dispatch, and "their spick and
span appearance commanded great
attention." Three volunteer regi
ments from Manila have reached San
Francisco to be mustered out. The
Oregon regiment brought back over
1000 men. The Nebraskans report a
total loss of sixty-two men.
The Penhsylvanians lost an aggre
gate of only twenty-four men. Here
are three regiments which after a
year's service, largely on the firing
line in Luzon and in the trenches, re
turn to their homes with a combined
mortality of less than 130. All saw
mora or less hard fighting and march
ing. It wag the Pennsylvanians who
stood the brunt of a Spanish night
sortie during a storm. Tlie Nebras
kans and Oregbnians were in the
thick of the engagements reaching
from Manila to Malolos and San
Fernando, and passed through sev
eral ugly ambuscades. But they are
back home looking well and with
ranks but little reduced when com
parison is made with former wars.
In the face of figures so significant
it is useless to say that these regfr
juents huvo not been intelligently
handled and well cared for. They
are healthy, make a fine appearance
on parade and their mortality list isH
small. They have worked steadily,
fought bravely and seen some hard
ships, but all thisls in tlie line of a
soldier's duty. Those who do not
count upon such an experience should
not enter the service. Many a regi
ment in the civil war returned with
Jess than 200 men. The regular army
in that struggle wus literally shot out
of existence.
When the "yellow" Interviewers
circulate in these returning regiments
to oollect material to baok up the
claim that the war is a failure the
men in tho ranks might well point to
their long line tp Bhow hoy well their
comfort and health bus been guarded,
securing them the vantage ground in
(Iglitlng nnd preserved theiu from
disaster. Thono rocrtments nro not In
tho shapn that bespeaks an incom
petent administration.

BROUGHT BACK FROM THE GRAVS.
Last November Mr. Joseph James,
painter, of 325 W. Pearl St., Indianapo
lis, Ind., was at death's door with quick
consumption. Wasted to 'a skeleton;
his lungs a mass of ulceration; his
death was hourly awaited by his doctor
and family. He was kept in a constant
stupor with opium. A irieud, thinking
to relieve his terrible cough, gave him a
bottle of Brazilian Balm. Seeing its
wonderful effect, the doctor advised its
continued use. Mr. James soon after
dismissed his- doctor, and depended
on the Balm aloue. His recovery was
rapid and complete, and in February he
returned to work. His lungs are sound,
and his weight greater than at any time
in his life. His recovery is regarded as
almost a miracle.
COMMA D4CILI.ES.
In consumption beware of cough mix
tures and prescriptions that contain
opium. Opium paralizes the nerves,
and gives the comma bacillus a good
chance to destrov the lungs. It is
always fatal. Brazilian Balm does not
contain a trace ot any opiate, Dut stimu
lates the nerves with new life and power,
destroys the microbe, and restores all
that is left of the diseased lungs to a
sound and healthy state which no other
remedy has ever been known to accom
