New York, July 2S. The funeral of
the Into Robert U. Ingersoll took place
nt 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon nt
Walston, Dobbs Kerry, where he died
on Friday lmt. No clergyman wns
present to conduct the services; there
was no music, ami there were no pall
bearers. The body lay on a cot In the
room where he died. It was enshroud
od In white, and Just one red rose
placed on his breast. About tho cot
wero bnnhs of floral tributes sent by
friends, wreaths and bunches of blos
soms.
Mrs. Ingersoll sot bosldo hor dead,
nnd beside her were her daughters,
Mrs. Walston II. Drown nnd Miss
Maud Ingersoll. They wero very much
agitated, and wept almost continuous
ly. Mr. nnd Mrs. C. V. Farrell wero
presont and Charles Droadway Rouse,
Colonel Ingersoll's oldest friend, oc
cupied a chair by the side of the blor.
There wero somo 40 others present,
and they romalned standing through
out. The Intcnso sllonce was broken by
Dr. John Chirk Rldpath, who, In a
volco full of emotion, said:
My friends, It Is n very sad duty to
rend In tho presence of the dead the
last pooin written by Colonel Robert
Q. Ingersoll entitled, 'Declaration of
tho Freo.'"
This poem Colonel Ingersoll had
read and altered In somo of tho parts
only n fow hours before ho was
stricken.
Major O. J. Smith, who resides tn
Dobbs Ferry, and who was n. close per
sonal friend of Colonol Ingersoll, then,
without any preliminary words, read
another extract from Colonol Inger
soll's writings, entitled "My Religion:"
"To lovo JuBtlco, to long for tho
right, to lovo mercy, to assist tho
weak, to forget wrongs nnd remember
benefits to lovo tho truth, to be Bin
core, to utter honest words, to lovo
liberty, to wngo relentless war against
slavery in all its forms, to lovo wife
and child nnd friend, to make a happy
homo, to love the beautiful In art, in
nature, to cultivate the mind, to bo
familiar with tho mighty thoughts that
genius had expressed the noble deeds
of all tho world, to cultivates courage
and cheerfulness, to make others
happy, to Oil life with tho splendor of
generous acts, the warmth of loving
words, to discard orror, to destroy prej
udice, to receive now truths with
gladness, to cultivate hope, to sco the
calm beyond tho storm, the dawn be
yond tho night, to do the best that
can bo done and then be resigned, this
is the religion of reason, tho creed of
science. This satisfies the brain and
heart."
Dr. John Elliott, of Now York, read
tho funeral oration delivered by Colo
nel Ingersoll over his brother's dead
body. This concluded tho short and
simple services. Nearly all present
then took a parting look at tho dead
and passed out.
Aftor they had gone Mr. Rouss arose
from his chair, and as he Is totally
blind passed his hand over tho faco of
his departed friend nnd said:
Perhaps he is better now. No ono
can understand It."
Mrs. Ingersoll said to him: "Tho
colonel wanted you to put your hand
upon his heart," and suiting tho action
to the word, she directed his hand to
the left breast of the deceased.
Mr. Rouss asked what she was going
to do with tho remains.
"I cannot give him un." she said.
"I cannot put him in tho ground. 1
can't bear to think of It. We're going
to bring him back home."
The body will probably bo taken to
Fresh Pond, Long Island, tomorrow
for cremation, but this arrangement Is
subject to change.
During tho morning there wero
many visitors to look upon the faco
of the deceased. Among them wero
soveral old colored servants of tho
family who had como from Washing
ton and took four days off and paid
tnelr oxpenses to do honor to their
benefactor. Among these wero two
former butlers of tho family. Ono old
man who was a baggageman on tho
railroad came from down on Long
Island; others came from Chicago,
Syracuse and Buffalo.
Many additional telegrams of sym
pathy were received yesterday, ono of
them being from General Miles.

In a railroad accident tin- other day a
man sustained ten complete fractures of

and sprains, and yet he is recoveritij?. Men
auu women sometimes
withstand great physi
cal violence, but suc
cumb to the invisible
germs of consumption
so small that they
can be seen only under
a powerful microscope.
The starting point of
consumption is in me
stomach, which, when
deranged, makes bad
blood because diges
tion is not perfect, and
in bad blood the mi
crobes multiply and
flourish. Sooner or
later the lungs are at
tacked, and in the weak
spots the germs begin
their deadly work of
tearing down the tis

Golden Medical Dis
covery stops the encroachments of con
sumption microbes. It builds up nnd
fortifies the whole system by aiding the
stomach in its many functions. It assists
in the proper assimilation of food. This
scientific remedy cures lingering coughs,
bronchitis, bleeding at the lungs, and
every other symptom that eventually
leads to consumption. Dr. R. V. Pierce,
of Buffalo, N. Y., who makes this won
derful medicine, gives free, fatherly ad
vice to all who write him.
" Last spring I was taken with .evere pains In
my chest, and was so weak I could hardly walk
about the house," says Mrs. G. K. KerT, of Fort

I was very much better, I took five bottles of it
