raco was from Drenton's reef lightship,
off Nowport, to Now London. Thirty-
two miles of tho Ions stretch of water
was a beat to windward, with a stiff
brcezo blowing. Tho distance. In
cluding tho long boat to windward, wati

Neither yacht carried a working top
sail, and It was In this kind of work
that Columbia gained such a long lead,
averaging moro than a quarter of a
minute faster each mllo than tho Do
fondor, The water was very rough,
but tho now boat rode very easily nnd
did not buffet tho waves as much as
the Dofondor.

Nowhouse, a Slav, of Edwardsvllle,
this county, at about 4 o clock yes
terday afternoon, shot and killed his
wife and then sent a bullet into him
self. The attempt at suloldo was un
successful. It Is thought he was drunk
at tho time, and that ho bad been an
gered by the woman. His two step
daughters, aged respectlvoly 8 and 10
years, were the only witnesses to the

from Ghent, was badly beaten by tho
Socialists. A guard of soldiers on
duty finally cleared the galleries, nnd

minister of war. M. J. II. J. Van Den

nbuso by the socialists, who blamed
him for originating the uproar.
Numerous crowded meetings were
held last night to protest against thi
electoral reform bill. Thoee who at
tended subsequently formed them

paraded the principal streets. When

police drove them back. The troops
and tho civic guard woro confined to
barracks.
At a lato hour tho demonstrators

Finally a body of mounted gondarmes
repeatedly charged tho orowd, greatly

gendarmes, who thoreupon discharged
their revolvers.
This also failed to scatter the crowd,
and tho gendarmes finally charged
with fixed bayonets nnd drawn swords.
Two gondnrmos and sovoral rioters
were wounded.
Many arrests woro mado. Numerous
window and street lamps wore smash
ed, and tho scuffling continuod until
nftor midnight, when a heavy fall of
rain dispersed tho demonstrators.
Tho streots aro still held by tho
police and civic guards, and detach
ments of the gendarmorlo aro arriving
from tho provinces.

coronor's Jury held an Inquest ovor tho
remains of Ed Gills and Adam Sam

back. Kills' body was plorced with 25
buckshot and Samuels was killed with
a riflo. The Jury's verdict was that
tho negroes "mot death at the hands
of an unknown mob or unknown par

that tho law must be carried out, and
that ho was fully prepared to meet his
death. Howover, the noise of tho

for his nerves, and at times ho was vis
ibly affected. Ho rallied yesterday
afternoon when his daughtor called
and said good bye for tho last tlmo.
