Schrlnk and His "Home."
Through the enterprise of our sov
eral county seat contemporaries, it is
learned that the Hon. Augustavus
Schrlnk, postmaster at Pottsville,
now occupies tho now federal build
ing as the place of his official abode.
At least one of the daily papers of
that town, Mr. Sohrink's personal
organ, describes Jthe new building ns
"the handsomest home in Schuylkill
county," and for fear that there may
be some doubt in the minds of its
readers on that score, adds that
"everybody is delighted with the now
building."
We are only too willing to accept
the statements of our contompornry
in this respect, but a critical inspec
tion of the cut of the building pub
lished in the same issue in which the
statement appears leads one to the
opinion that the editor's enthusiasm
has the better of his good judgment,
or else tho conclusion that it is "the
prettiest homo in Schuylkill county"
was reached after a comparison had
been made between Mr. Schrink's
"official home" and the barns of sev
eral of Pottsville's moneyed men.
Accompanying the cut of the build
ing is a picture of Pottsville's new
postmaster, and the fentures of that
fortunate individual does not corro
borate the statements of our esteemed
and usually trustworthy contempor
ary. One would think the day of the
.removal of the post'olllce from "the
old to the new" building would be
tho happiest day of tho new P. M's.
life, but his face, as produced in the
columns of our contemporary, bears
a troubled look; in fact, the expres
sion is not that of the usual jovial
'Gustavus. The cause, we are not
prepared to state, and on this point
our contemporary sheds no light, and
adds none to the features of its owner.
Up to the present time, prior to the
occupancy of the building, the county
seat newspapers have very wisely re
frained from commenting upon the
"architectural beauty" of the struc
ture, and whenever some "enterpris
ing" newspaper man did venture to
discuss the subject it was to ridicule
the government, the architect and
the gentleman (a worthy son of
Pottsvillo) who secured the appro
priation. In fact, since the building
assumed shape, our county seat con
temporaries delighted in nothing
better, when "copy was short" in
poking fun at their new federal
building. But this has all been
changed. A new candidate for pub'
lio favor has appeared upon the
scene, has taken the bit In his teeth,
and as "one who upholds and defends
popular rights" has braved the storm
nnd presqnts a reproduction of the
"architectural beauty" of this Btruo-
ture upon white paper. We certainly
commend the courage of our contain
porary, even if we cannot recommend
it as an authority on such matters,
notwithstanding, as it says, Super
vising Architect Slmonson "received
his promotion as a direct result of bis
clever work on the structure."
"The adverse critiolsm" on the part
of the threo other Pottsville news
papers, regarding the' 'new structure
must now pass away, and we expect
them all to join the lead of their
youthful but fearless contemporary,
and declare it to be "the finest home
in Schuylkill county."
