Contrary to general oxnnctnMnnn. there were no bodies found during tho day in tho basement of tho Williams dry goods storo. All the fires which had been smoldering for 36 hours woro extinguished and a number of cellars In which dead bodios were supposed to be were cleared up. Supplies havo been coming in from all directions, and thero is no scarcity of anything to eat. Bedding Is not too plentiful, and blankets are needed. Food was so plentiful yesterday that tho relief committee made a largo sum of money by selling sandwiches nnd bread. All the funds derived from this source of revenue was turned over to the goneral fund, and from this source alone nearly $300 was derived. Ton cents was charged for a thimbleful of coffee nnd the same amount for a very aesperuto sanawicn. Tno cashior, moreover, mado It his business to bo forgetful of returning chango, and in numberless cases ho worked off his sandwiches nt BO conts apiece. When objections woro offered tho kicker was told it was for thp public good. The relief committee has recoivod tenders of inonoy from various sources amounting to about $5,000. Enough additional money is In sight, it is said, to supply nil immediate domands for cash. A building and loan associa tion plan has been talked of for re building tho town. IIo fny. nml AiItIhch Fnrniam to Form nTriiat WashlnRton, Juno IS. Mr. Henry O. Havetneyer. prnsldent of tho Amorlcan Sugar Refining company, was oxamln ed by tho Industrial commission yes terday In connection with its Investi gation ot trusts. His testimony re lated almost wholly to tho sugar In dustry, nnd he opened with a vigorous attack upon the customs tariff, which ho declnred was the "mother ot all trusts," becoming such by providing "an Inordlnato protection to manufac tured articles." This attack was made In n written statement, which the wit ness had prepared beforo making his appearance beforo tho committee, nnd which ho read In n ringing voice. Mr. Hnvemoyer's statement asserted that 10 par cent was as high as any tariff should bo. He contended thnt sugar Is discriminated against in the tariff In the Interest of tlio Ixnitslan cane growers, the beet sugar makers and tho sugnr growers of the Hawntlan Islands. To these Interests, ho con tended, the United States contributed $24,000,000, which was taken out of the pockets of the people. What congress should have dono was to havo put an Internal revenue tax on the American production of sugar. Tho representa tions made in con gross concerning the trust, he declared, were untrue, and If It was a fact that the people suf fered from trusts they must bin mo tho protective tariff, of which tho trusts wcro merely the machinery. Mr. Havemcyor declared that cor porations are under no obligations whatever to any of the states for their oxlstenco. Quito tho reverso. Tho HENRY O. HAVEMEYER. states aro under obligations to them. If tho plant of these Industries con solidated was capable of being put on wheels nnd moved from state to state, you would find very active bidding for them. It Is not nn unusual thing for certain localities to guarantee frco taxation for 20 years, free water, and in somo Instances glvo tho land to cor porations to havo them orgnnlze under tholr statutes and locate In their states. Hostility to capital meets with Its own condemnation. This Is illustrated by tho situation in New York, where n discrimination against capitat has pre vented its employment nnd driven it olsewhero, rssulting In n greatly in creased tax rate, and a tendency to incroaso the number of tho unem ployed. The true "communism of polf" is the customs tariff bill. It says to tho peoplo: "Hero Is tho law wo havo enacted for your robbery. Do not com plain of It, but do your utmost to at tack nnd injure tho machinery en gaged In extracting from you what wo legislate shall bo taken from you. Keep up the clatter whilo tho voters on tho tariff bill tnko advantage of tho nolso to enact laws that cause your impoverishment nnd thus contrlbuto to tho greed and avarlco of tho few." There is a prevailing hostility to wealth. This is perfectly illogical Every ono wants money. It Is the abuse of money, not its possession, which Is opposed to public Interest. This hostility finds Its outlet in hos tile legislation, in unequal and unjust taxation. All this is probably uncon stitutional. It is directly against tha interest of tho very class, tho poorer class, whom it is supposed to benefit. Corporations, whether directly such or In the form of trusts, are an ex pedient for uniting tno interests of a large number of persons of smaller means Into a large aggregation of cap ital. Attack upon them is, therefore, an attack upon their stockholders. In the case of many well conducted cor porations inese stockholders are vorv numerous and are oftan persons of moderate means, depondent upon their Income for their support. In the absence of all disturbing causes, the direct tendency of a com bination of capital is to nromoto economy, reduco expenses and dlmlnlsn price. After listening to Mr. Hnvemoyer's statement the next threo hours were, devoted to answering questions askad him in rapid succession by members of tha commission. He at first declined to state whether the company was making money at present, saying that was tha business of the company alone;, but he afterwards made an incidental statement which tho commission con strued Into an admission that tho busi ness was not profitable now, Tho witness confessed that his com pany had very little regard for the welfare of rivals. In business, saying that preatlgp. ability, experience and wealth would win in tho long run In the struggle and that trusts were ftn example of tho survival of tho fittest in business. "That is tiade," ho Fald, "and tho sooner you realize. It and quit trying to control It by federal legislation tha better for all. A man cannot expect to havo himself contin ualty wot-nursed by the government. If rrien do not want to btjy our stocks they need not. They do not need gov ernment protection. If they wade in and got stuck lot them got out, and it they wish wado in again, Tho fata of rival concerns Is their affair, not oura." Speaking of tho ethics of life, sug gested by a member ot the commis sion. Mr. Havemeyer said: "I don't care two conts for your ethics. I know nothing about them. I am talking about business." He declared that tho tariff enabled the steel rail trust to mulct tho public to tho oxtont of $9 per ton, and said incidentally that Mr. Carnegie had not yet stated what ha was going to do with his money. On the quostlon of labor Mr. Have meyer said the laboring olement was forced to form organizations, but thnt in dolnir SO tbov flncrlflrurl muMi Iniln. pendonco. and tho union had tho effect of "bringing othor men down tn a low level." He contomlpd that Jin was n friend of labor, and said thaf good men In the employ of the trust wern paid 10 per rent, more than they rould got MmwIibta. Mr. Havemeyer Mid thnt many things were done In btislnem which looked cold bloodod and harsh, but that btislnoM conditions required con duct Justifying such characterization The farmers, he thought, ought to es tablish a trust for their protection. Replying to a question as to how he could conduct business at n lota and still declare dividends, Mr. Have meyer declared, laughingly: "One K nn executive act and the other a mat tor of bnsttiMB." The wltneefl cloeed with a protnst against what he railed the tariff dis criminations agalnnt sugar, reiterating that It was due entirety to the feellnic against combinations in bnelnea. "The sugar refiners have never had a fair hearing at the hands of the ways and means committee," he said. Prpld'iit ICruui'P Ilntprinlntifi. Pretoria. June 15.
