rivers or this portion of tho statu out
of their banks and caused a great loss
of property, was much worso than re
ported Wednesday night. Many people
aro known to havo perished, meager re
ports plnclng tho number at 25.

ing that both towns had been swept
by the raging floods and wero badly
devastated. In San Saba eight people
wero arowneci, and tna entire town Is
reported under wator. Tho river at
that point Is ono mile wide, nnd Tun
ing like a mill race. At Manardvlllo
13 houses wore swept away, and yes
terday several more fell Into tho swirl
ing torrent and started on tholr vovaco
down tho stream. Tho river Is report
ed as rising at iotn places and gravo
fears aro ontertalncd that tho entlro
country In that neighborhood will bo
laid to wasto.
San Saba Is located In a valloy and
vast tracts of wheat fields are under
water. These crops will provo a total
loss. Many persons, according to re
ports received hero, had dimculty In
getting to high land before the rise
camo. The situation at Manardvllle
is oven moro serious. A small town
located to tho right, and In tho bond
of the river, In the valloy, It proved
on easy prey to the raging torrents.
Seventeen people are known to have
hoen drowned there, and there may bo
others. Of those drowned two were
young white girls, Lydla and Anna
Wells by name. Tho others wero all
negroos, who wero living In cabins
close to the river front and wero
caught In tho flood before they could
make tholr way to safety, owing to tho
aarkness of the night. The' town has
been laid wasto by tho floods and all
tho surrounding country Is Inundated.
This additional flood has not yet
reached Austin, but it Is expected hero
within a few hours. A 45 foot rise is
expected. The big dam and power
house at this point have been under
a heavy strain since Wednesday, ow
ing to tne terriiic lorco ot the flood.

retary Taylor has decided not to carry
out, at present, tho law providing lor
the erection of a public building at
Wllkcsbarre, Pa. It is stated that this
action was taken because of the high
value placed upon the available sites.
Congress appropriated 1125,000 for a
site and building, and up to this time
the lowest offer made for a suitable
site Is $50,000, leaving only $75,000 for
tho building. Tho matter probably
will be reported to the next congress,
with a recommendation that tho ap
propriation bo increased.

Little Rock, Juno 9. It Is reported
here that a landslide occurred at Ross
Hollow nnd engulfed 28 men, all ot
whom aro supposed to havo beon kill
ed. Ross Hollow Is a pass between
two small mountain ranges about 28
miles west of Llttlo Rock, on the line
of the Choctaw and Memphis road,
now under construction from Llttlo
Rock to Howe, I. T. A largo force of
gradors has been engaged In grading
the road through tho pass, and ac
cording to tho report It was a part of
this force of men that were caught
undor the falling earth. None of tho
officials of the road nor any of tho
contractors who aro at present In this
city have received news of the acci
dent. The report was brought In by
farmers traveling from the locality.
The scene of the accident Is 28 miles
from hero, over a rough stretch of
country, nnd It Is Impossible to get
news from there before night. Ac
cording to the farmers bringing the
news a large force of men were on
gaged In excavating In a deep cut
when the earth abovo, which had beon
loosened by heavy rains recently,
suddenly camo down upon tnem, bury
ing 28 men under tons ot earth.

lug with a rope drawn tightly around
his neck. It Is supposed the robbers
secured some money. Suspicion points
to men In the neighborhood, one ot

village ot Kluckwan.
