OUR COUNTRY : First, Last and Forever.
CoNSlDKUAiiLU interest is being
uiuulfested among the Republicans
of this district in tho election of a
delegate to the state convention.
You oannot reach Herald readers
through any other medium. And
this paper has more readers than all
the other publications in Shenandoah.,
It is now almost three mouths
since tho Borough Auditors began
their work of auditing the accounts
of the ofllclals of Shenandoah, and
up to tho present time no report has
been made to the Town Council.
If tho Schuylkill Traction Com
pany desires to earn the good graces
of the people of this town, they will
abandon the narrowest thoroughfare
in the town, and lay their tracks on
West Centre street And none should
be better pleased than the residents
on Coal street.
Tub telegraph tells us that a Head
ing lawyer was assaulted on the street
in that city by two women, because
the limb of the law referred to them
in an uncomplimentary manner while
they were on the witness stand. Im
agine what would be the result, if
youcan, had the women in question
been witnesses in the Schuylkill
county court.
The silver wing of the Democratic
party in this county are much put
about because the members of the
Standing Committee refused to en
dorse Bryan and the Chicago plat
form. When it is considered that
tUoserwho favored the Ulriuh resolu
tions were not members of the com
mittee, but were merely substitutes,
it is plain that the committee acted
wisely in turning down these inter
lopers. Thb Democratio press, or to be
more accurate, the silver press, are
now abusing ex-Senator Pefter, who
has deserted their cause and returned
to his first love, the Republican party.
We are not sure that the latter party
is to be congratulated; but it might
be pertinent to inquire, if , Peiler
acted the Benedict Arnold in his de
sertion of the Bryan cause, what
position did'he occupy when he left
the Republican party seeking false
gods?
The committee having in charge
the solicitation of funds in behalf of
the widows and orphans of the
victims of the Latthuer riots in 1807,
have just made public their report.
The receipts of the charity fund is
given as $4, 305. GO, and the disburse
ments to widows and orphans and
other dependent relatives of the
-victims was $4,169.71, leaving a bal
ance of 1135.89. The committee also
collected $4,169.71 to prosecute Sheriff
Martin's deputies, and for that pur
pose they expended $1,751.58.
Christian Scientists are not a bit
dismayed by the popular clamor
directed against their cruel methods.
They conslderit a good advertisement
or them, and they are now going to
play the game to the last trick, now
thatthey have secured the attention
no matter what kind of attention pf
the public. To this end they have
decided to charter the Metropolitan
opera house in New York city, for
next Sunday, and they will then hold
a giant meeting to demonstrate to
the world 'at large the salient points
of their religion.
Editor Parkkr, of the Mahanoy
City Record, has just returned from a
trip throughout the state, and he
comments as follows : "While the
coal regions are dull to desperation,
in other sections of the state business
is enjoying a genuine boom, an un
mlstakable boom. In Philadelphia
idle men and women are compara
tively few. Said & man in the employ
of a large manufacturing establish
ment : 'It used to be that all we had
to do when we wanted a man for
xtra work was to go to the shop door
and pick out the best man from the
crowd' that were waiting there for the
crumbs of work. It isn't that way
now. When you want a man you
must seek him, and there Is a dicker
ing aboift terms. It is so in other
parts Of the state, "

Griffin, Gn., May 24. Thiv?o colored
employes of the IClncalde Manufactur
ing company were severely flogged by
whltecnps Monday night, according to
the story of the victims. It Is not pos
slblo to verify tho story from other
sources, but the mon show marks of
rough usage. One hundred lashes, it
is claimed, was given the victims.
During the flogging the leader of thq
whltecaps told the negroes that they
had been ordered to leave the town
and they had neglected to obey the
order, hence the whipping. The men
say they never received such orders,
but that they will go at once.
