Hnrrlsburg, May 13, The eauostrlnn Rtnttie of Major Gonoral John K. Hart ranft, In Capitol park, was unveiled with impresatvo ceremonlos yestorday afternoon In tho presence of a largo HIRTMN concourao or people. Tho exercises I woro followed by a parade, In which , tho survivors of the Third dlvUlon of , tho Ninth army corps, commanded by j General Hnrtranft In tho civil war, had the right of lino. The procession also Included the Ninth regiment of lmmunc3, from Camp Meade, n pro i visional brigade of tho National Guard. tho Grand Army of the Itopubllc posts I and Sons of Votorans camps of Harrls ! burg and vicinity and tho Harrlsburg fire dopartmcnt. A reunion of the survivors of the I Flfty-flrat regiment. Pennsylvania vol unteers, of which Ilartranft was col onel, was hold In the morning for tho election of officers and the transaction of routlno business. After tho meet ing tho old soldiers marched to the Executive Mansion to pay their re spects to Mrs. Hartranft and her two sons and daughters, who are the guoata of governor and MrB. Stone. The feature of the day's exorcises was tho unveiling coremonles, at which there were present many of the survivors of General Hartranft's di vision and several distinguished sol diers and statesmen. President and Mrs. McKInlcy wore expected to be present, but they could not como on account of tho condition of tho pres ident s health. Major General Mlle3, on account of official business atWrsh- lngton, was unable to come to Harrls burg. Postmaster General Smith, Secreta ry of War Alger and Adjutant General Corbtn were present to do honor to the hero of Fort Stodman. Another guest' of honor wob General H. Kyd Douglass, of Hagerstown, an aide on the saff of General Stonewall Jackson. The exorcises openoa witn music Dy the Carlisle Indian band, after which prayer was offered by Hot. William A. Houck, of Shamokln, chaplain of the division. After a selection by tho Stcelton band, the statue was unveiled by Miss Leonora Emblck, daughter of ex-nepresontatlvo M. A. Emblck, of Boiling Springs, a member of the Hart ranft division. As tho flags fell from the shining bronze thero was a mighty cheer. The Steelton band added to tho enthusiasm by playing tho "Star Spangled Dannv.' Major Isaac C. Brown, deputy secre tary of Internal affairs, followed with an oration. Short speeches were also made by General Douglass, Secretary Alger and Postmaster General Smith. General Corbln and Sculptor Rudcstuhl were Introduced to the audience. After the Carlisle Indian band ren dored "America" the atatuo was pro sented to tho state by Dr. J. E. Van- Camp, of Carlisle, and was received In short speech by Governor Stone. Tho coremonles closed with music by tho Steelton band, and then followed the parade, In which over 3,009 marched. Tho Hartranft statue was the work of P. W. Ruckstuhl, a New York sculp tor, and cost $18,000, appropriated by the legislature of 1895. In the statue the hero of Fort Steadman Is repre sented returning to his native town amid tho plaudits of the populace, who strew tho way with laurel and with palm. The gesture of the soldier pro claims that he Is answering the salu tations of the public; tho motion of his hand containing his cap Is arrested at the end of the sweep that has lifted It from his head. Hartranft repre sents a good Ideal of the men who fought out the civil war. Tho voterans of Hartranfts command who nave seen tho statue pronounce it a most perfect likeness of the general. In most equestrian statues the horse Is standing, but In this case the sculptor has tried, and most successful!)', to make a horse that to the eye of the apoctator appears to be In motion. It Is hard to find anywhere among eques trian statues a more animated horso than that upon which Hartranft, in bronze, sits. CASTOR I A Por Infants and Children. Charleston, May 13. With n splrltoil and at times stormy session, the ninth anniml reunion of the United Confed erate VeteranH yesterday was brought to a close. General John 11. Gordon and nil the old olllcors were ro-olectod. as follows: Commander-in-chief. J. B. Gordon; commander department ot Army of Northern Virginia, Wndo Ilnmpton; commander department ot Tennessee, Stephen D. Loo; command er department of trans-MlsslsslppI, W. L. Cabell. Louisville, Ky., was chosen as tho next place of meeting and the question of federal care of Confederate grave was disposed of by the adoption of a substitute resolution, which de clines the president's suggestion, ex cept as to those graves located tn th north, and reserving to tho women of the south the duty of caring for thoso In the seceding Btatos and Maryland. Tho adoption of this resolution and the report that accompanied It pre cipitated a debate which verged upon the sensational, and at times much confusion and disorder prevailed. Tho resolution ndoptcd In place of tho one offered by Stephen D. Leo Is In sub stance as follows: "The United Confederate Veterans deslro to place upon record their Bin cere appreciation of the utterances of the president of tho Unltod States con cerning tho assumption of tho euro of the graves of our Confederate dead by tho national government. Wo appre ciate every kindly sentiment expressed and wo shall welcome any legislation which shall result In tho care of the graves of our comrades In tho north ern states by our government. "In regard to our dead whose re mains are resting In the states which wore represented In the Confederacy and Maryland tho care of their final resting places is a sacred trust, dear to tho hearts of southern women, and wo behove that we can safely let It there remain." Several very vigorous speeches wore made In opposition to the wholo prin ciple Involved In the matter, but the final vote upon the resolution was practically unanimous, and the an nouncement of Its passage was cheered. Another Incident was the mention of tho southern lynching question by Dr. J. L. M. Curry, one of tho surviving members of tho Confederate congross, who, while denouncing mob law, do fended the south and declared her peo ple should see to It that the record of her future should be as unstained a that of her past. Tho all Important report of the com mittee on a school history wns also presented and adopted unanimously as meeting all questions that had led to the agitation of the subject. Tho ro port alluded to the wpr with Spain as a factor tn obliterating the shadows of the war betweon the states, and re ferred to the prompt response of tho southern states to tho call for troops ns showing the wholo country tho depth and fervor of southern patriot ism. Continuing the report says: President McKlnley displayed the spirit of the American soldier when he chose from his former foes the gallant Wheeler, the steadfast Fltzhugh Lee, the chivalrous Butler and many others of our own brave comrades to marshal the hosts of the Union. We are glad that General Wheeler had another op portunity to exhibit the fighting qual ities of the Confederate soldier and that Lloutenants Hobson, Victor Blue and Worth Bagley, In the navy, show ed tho country of what stuff, our young men aro made of. Once more the blood of north and south has been poured out together no longer be neath contending standards In the bit terness of war between the states, but now beneath one flag, to tho glory of on'o country. These dead, at least, be long to us all. The last hateful mem. ory that could divide our country Is burled with them. About their grave kneels a new nation, loving all hor children everywhere the same." Alluding to tho Confederate graves the report says: "The recent generous words of Presi dent McKlnley, commending tho Con federate dead to the nation's care, are the expression of a sentiment growing everywhere that the deeds of the Con federate soldier are the glory of the whole country and that his memory Is worthy to be cherished wherever sou sacrifice commands sympathy or brave actions striko a responsive chord in noblo hearts." Coming down to the question for which It was appointed, the committee says that Its duty Is now little more than to keep watch upon the histories of the day and to stimulate historical research and publication, and regards the prospect for fairness and candor In history as much improved, by the Spanish war. Continuing, the report says: The reception given our benevolent Intentions in the Philippines la certain ly of a character likely to Inspire a wholesome respect for the matter ot governing people of another blood who have started late in the race of civil ization. We aro not likely In the fu ture to hear so much about the right of men, who have not yet learned to govern themselves, to govern others by their votes. The difficulties of tho race problem abroad ought to bring a charitable Judgment of the. same thing bere at home, and we may reasonably expect our northern, brethren to meat us noreattor fattier in, a spirit ot In dulry than of rebuke," Last night at the auditorium a grand reception to the veterans was held and an address delivered by Colonel Henry I Turner, 01 unicago, commanding the YXi Illinois regiment, who has boon the guest of the city during the re union. A brilliant ball was glvon at the Isle of Palms tq the sponsors, maids of honor and Daughters ot tag tonreaeracy. The New York Time, In an editorial entitled "What Shall We Do For Dewr?'- -ays: "What mil we di for tho man who has done so much for usT That Is the question which has for n long time been agi tating the American people- It Is quite true that, according to our precedents, we have not been niggardly In recogni tion of the great service of "Commo dore" Dewey, as ho was n year ago. Hut there Is a persistent and prevailing feeling that we ought to do more; that the American nation. In norao unofficial nnd spontaneous way, should recognize the services of Dowoy as the British nation officially recognized the ser vices of Wellington, when It presented him with the eatate of Stralthfielday. "Evidently It will not do to make any 'exclusive' acknowledgment of tho services of an American hero to whom all Americans ftl equally grateful. Evidently It will not do to leave him at the mercy of a group of millionaire. Evidently It will not do to exclude fiom the national testimonial to the admiral any American citizen who de sires to bear his part In It.'" The editorial then propose) that the 2,119 dally newspapers of the country bo .authorised to solicit subscriptions to the amount of $600 each, and that Individual subscriptions be limited. Tho limiting of the amount to be col lected by each pap- to $600 would be moderate enough to prevent any news paper from exploiting the admiral for the purpose of advertising Itself. Half of thU should go to the erection of n residence for the admiral In whatever place In tho Unltod States he might prefer to put It and the other half for his personal use. The editorial pro ceeds: "This would be truly a national and popular subscription. The admiral would not be at liberty to refuse It, since It would not bo tho croatlon of nn obligation on his part, but only the recognition of an obligation on tho part of tho nation. THU TORCH TO POWDER. Touch a lighted torch to the contents of a powder mill and up tt goes I Hut it isn't the torch that blows up the mill; it's the pow der. The stuff is all ready to ex plode. It only needs one touch of fire to start it. V.' hen a man's blood is all ripe and ready for dis ease it only needs a little touch to start him going. Maybe be gets a slieht cold, eets wet feet or sits in a draft ; then off he goes into a gal loping consumption. liut tt isn't tnc uratt that does it; that only starts him. His blood was all ready for it in the first place. It was thick with bilious poisons; clogged with germs of disease all ready to be roused into fatal activity at the least touch. " My wife had a severe attack of pleurisy and lunp trouble," says Abrnm Freer, En., of koclt bridge, Greene Co., 111., in a thankfiii letter to Dr. K. V. l'ierce, of Buffalo, N. Y. "The doctors srnveheriiDtodie. She commenced taklnirDr. rierce's Colden Medical Dlscovcrv-'and she be gan to improve from the first dose. By the time she had taken eleht or ten bottles she was cured. and it was the cause of a large amount being cold here. I think the Colden Medical Discov ery is the best medicine in the world for lung trouble " Not only for luntr trouble Is it the most wonderful medicine in the world, but for every form of weakness and debility. It redeems the very sources of life from these subtle poisonous taints which lay the sys tem open to dangerous disease. It gives work; enriches the blood; builds up solid strength and vital force. when you find yourself losing flesh and appetite ; growing listless by day and sleepless by night there is an enemy lurking ready to apply the torch.
