Chicago, May 12. Before the sen
ate pure food committee yesterday
four prominent witnesses tostlfled as
to tho effect on the. human stomach of
the use of antlsoptlcs and "embalming
fluids" and preservatives In foods and
drink. In general they were agreed
that the substances usod were delctori
oub and that In many cases they were
poisonous. Elthor prohibit their use,
they declared, or compel tho manufac
turer and user to brand them plainly
and explicitly, so that tho consumer
may know exactly what is being oaten.
These witnesses -were Henry O. Plf
fard, a New York physician: Abbott
C. Prescott, dean of tho School of
Pharmacy of tho University of Mich
igan and professor of hygonlc chem
istry; Victor C. Vaughn, dean of tho
medical faculty at Ann Arbor and pro
fessor of hygiene, and II. C. Adams,
dairy and food commissioner in Wis
consin. Dr. Plffard made specific referenco
to foods and drugs which are bolng
gonorally adulterated, sometimes with
dangerous results to the consumer.
Bromo seltzer, ho said, 1 one of these.
Properly, It should consist of bromide
of potassium or some other substanco
of that kind and tho Ingredients of
soltzcr water.
"But It appears," he continued "that
acotantllde Is being extensively used
Instead. In the now famous Adams
case the experts examination of tho
bromo showed the prosence, In addition
to the acute poison, of acetanlltde, so
that I believe Its use Is widespread."
Tho commissioners made this state
ment at tho close of the day:
"The things which seem to stick out
about tho details of the Investigation
are the facts that antiseptics are used
indiscriminately and to defraud and
deceive; that they are in most cases
deleterious and in some positively
dangerous. Second, that in the absenco
of explicit labels dishonest manufac
turers are enabled to put spurious
goods on the market. These things
will bo looked after in the proposed
legislation."
The testimony of witnesses already
heard has attracted wide attention in
all parts of the country. Letters are
beginning to pour in from New York,
San Francisco and other cities in gen
eral accord with the testimony as pub
lished. Among others a letter came
from Jacob Balso, of New York, em
phasizing the statements made on cof
fee by Qraeme Stewart.
Senator Mason left last night for
Horton, Kan., where he is to deliver
nn address. Senator Harris will ex
amine several witnesses today and will
then leave for New York. The com
mission's work in Chicago will be post
poned after today for an indefinite
time.
Beer is soon to be put to a severe
test by the committee. A scientific
analysis of all brands ottered In the
open market will bo made by the gov
ernment experts at Washington, and
their report Will become a. part of tho
commission's records. Senator Mason
said that the regulations in regard to
beer would rocelve serious attention.
Tho committee has purchased In Chi
cago many samples of butter, pepper,
coffee, t Jellies and canned goods for
analytical examination In Washington.
The samples will he freed of their
labels and the experts will make their
investigations without knowledge of
the brand or source of the articles.

I ill 10 COUGHED
A Wreck From Grippe,
Catarrh and Asthma.
RESTORED WITH
I was known as "The Woman who Coughs," for I coughed in
cessantly. I was a school teacher till my health failed. Catarrh had
eaten away the partition in my nose. It had produced Bronchitis,
Asthma, dreadful Stomach troubles aud weak kidneys. In fact it had
gone all through my system, making me an easy victim for the Grippe
which left me a wreck in mind and body. This was the condition the
doctors left me in, after dosing me with opium, quinine, etc. Then I
bought cough cures without end but they only made me worse, I was
in despair till I got hold of Brazilian Balm and Toxlcola Tablets.
They acted like magic from the first, aud in a few weeks I was cured
and better than I had been in years. Talk about wonderful remedies,
Brazilian Balm and Toxicola saved my life.

Charleston, May 12. Tho Confeder

terday, which shortly nfter noon save
wny to the Wlnno Davis memorial ex
ercises, at tho conclusion of which nn
adjournment until 10 o'clock was
taken. Tho announcement that Gen
oral Josoph Wheeler was to speak
filled tho auditorium.
After sorao routino buslnoea tho
feature of the day's sewlon took place.
It was General Wheeler's addrtes, nnd
tho scene that nttonded his Introduc
tion was one of frantic enthusiasm.
Advancing to the front of tho platform
General Gordon held up his hand, and
absolute silence was upon tho vast
audlonco as he said:
"Comrades, I have hore a roal treat
for you. If I should tell this conven
tion there is here the hero of San
tiago" General Gordon could get no further.
A wild burst of applauso thundered
forth, rebol yells split the air and hats,
canes and handkerchiefs woro waved
as tho great audience rose to its feet.
Finally securing quiot General Gordon
spoke of General Wheoler as "the man
who at Santiago hold to tho front placo
tho nrmy and Hag of America."
Agnln tho applauso burst out, and
rising tho assemblage continued cheer
ing until the sceno was one of the
wildest that has ever marked a re
union. Proceeding, General Gordon declared
Wheeler one of "tho wiliest wizards of
the Confederacy," and then repeated
tho apocryphal story of the famous
little cavalryman when at Santiago ho
exclaimed as tho Spanish lines broke
"Forward, boys; tho Yanks are run
ning." Again the applause broke forth.
The audience roso as General
Wheeler stepped forward, apparently
much affected. He wore a black Prlnco
Albert suit, with badges on each lapel
of his coat. Ono was yellow by chance
and the other was red. Ho spoko de
liberately, calmly and clearly, the au
dience giving him close attention. His
reference to tho general sorrow caused
by the death of Winnie Davis nffected
many to tears. He closed amid much
applause and the orchestra playeo.
"America."
Then occurred ono of tho most pic
turesque Incidents of the session. Gen
eral Gordon arose and advanced to
the front of the stage, followed by
General Wado Hampton, escorted by
Colonel Holmes and Major Barker, tho
rormer bearing a beautiful silk uatr,
one side of which was the battlcflag
of the Confederacy and the reverse tho
state flag of South Carolina. In a few
woll chosen words Colonel Holmes pre
sented the banner to General Hamnton
as the gift of the Daughters of the
Confederacy of Charleston to the Uni
ted Confederate veterans.
Turning, General Hampton presented
tho Hag to General Gordon, who ac
cepted It with a graceful little addross
Here, as on all occasions when he ap-
poars, uenerai Hampton was greoted
witn tremendous applause, the old vet
eran of tho famous legion that bore hla
name being the idol not only of his
state, but the whole sou'th. In present
ing the flag General Hampton also re
signed as commander of the Army
of the Northern Virginia, saying ho
would servo In the ranks as a private.
He gave as a reason that his declining
years and physical weakness rendered
him unable to givo to the ofllce tho
attention and energy It demands. Many
of the veterans were visibly affected
at the geueral's words, and for an in
stant absolute silence provatled. Then,
as If by common Impulse, they roso
and cheored lustily. Bowing his
thanks, General Hampton stepped back
and soon afterward left the rostrum.
Tho report of the Jefferson Davis
monument committee, which was sub
mitted yesterday, Indorses the sug
gestion that the task of tho completion
of tho monument be turned over to tho
Daughters of tho Confederacy. The
report shows the committee now has on
hand ?19,3S2. It urges an active and
aggressive movement for the com
pletion of the proposed monument at
Richmond, and says that the commit
tee has concluded from the ill succoss
which Its efforts have met with that
the co-operation of the women of tho
south Is absolutely necessary If the
project Is to be consummated.
The delegation and visitors devoted
the afternoon to excursions to nearby
resorts, trips down the bay and social
functions, and last night a concert was
given at the auditorium, where a su
perb choir and orchestra rendered a
program on southern war songs.
The committee on resolutions, to
which was referred General Lee's reso
lution accepting President McKlnley's
proposal that tho federal government
should make provision for tho care
of the graves of Confederate dead.
spont several hours discussing the mat
ter yesterday, and Anally a compromise
resolution was framed, and this will
be offered as a substitute. The sub
stitute is to the effect that It tho na
tional government desires to care for
the graves tho Confederate veterans
do not object to its taking charge oi
those in the north and in the neigh
borhood of the old war prisons. The
resolution will state that the women
of the south have voluntarily under
taken to decorate and properly pro
serve the graves In the south, and the
association does not feel warranted In
taking from them what they havo,
grown to regard us a duty.
The election of officers will qccur
this afternoon, General John B, Gor
don has no opposition to re-election as
commander-in-chief, and his election
probably will bo unanimous.

sensational story published In some
newspapers of a deep laid counterfeit

In the photographic room of the patent

According to the story referred to,
there had been discovered In a "low
and noisome vault" of the patent
office photographd' negative of small
bills from $1 to $10 From these there
had been printed large amounts or
high grade counterfeits whioh were
being circulated broadcast In Cuba.
Commissioner Duell sid:
"The whole story is a sensational

couple of photographic negatives, and
poor ones at that, found by a messen
ger last Saturday while cleaning out
some of tho-plgeon holes. I sent them
to Chief Wilkle, of tho secret servlco.

Gus Thlekuhl, formorly In charge of

run by the patent office, said:
"The story is a fake."
Chief Wilkle said:
"You could not make any counter

any bills made from those plates have
been circulated In Cuba Is wholly un
true." No arrests havo been made, and none

Henson, of Coalton, Boyd Co., Ky., write :
"In October 1889 I gave birth to a baby and
the treatment I received at the hands of the mid

They said I had liver, luna; and uterine

did get up, I was a sleht to behold. I looked
like a corpse walking about. I commenced tak
