OUR COUNTRY : First. Last and Forever.
Alabama Democrats are quarrel
ing because the gold standard senti
ment is growing in tlie party. Tlie
silverltes can gain nothing by loslug
their temper as they slide down hill.
If Aguinaldo can begini war with
out the sanction of his rebel Congress,
he can stop it without reference to
that body. Gen. Otis is right in re
fusing to recognize the Pliiiipino
Congress.
Thk omission of wine from the bill
of fare at the recent Bryan dinner is
u bid for the Prohibition vote, and
another argument in favor of the
charge that it was not a Democratic
gathering.
No one can truthfully say that the
United States government is not
liberal in its contribution to pay for
the kind of soldiering performed by
the Pennsylvania Guards in the
Cuban war.
Thk country newspaper Is an iia
portant agoncy in the cultivation of
public spirit, and however humble it
may seem beside the metropolitan
daily it has a place in popular educa
tion which is too little regarded.
The Pottsville Republican yester
day was fourteen years old. Our
county seat contemporary is to be
congratulated, as few inlund papers
furnish their readers with an equal
service. It is leading its town con
temporaries a killing race.
Tns real victims of the Philadel
phia and Lancaster counterfeiters are
the wholesale and retail cigur dealers
who bought the fraudulently stamped
goods. The government Bhould, and
probably will, deal justly and fairly
with these people.
Thk reports of the damage to the
wheat crop may give some hopes to
the Democrats. Calamity furnishes
them their only chance for victory,
It is well to bear in mind, however,
that about this timo nearly every
year predictions are made that the
grain crop will be small.
It is believed that the veterans of
New Jersey were the first to make an
effort to have Decoration Day set
apart as a legal holiday. The etate
department of the G. A. It. in that
state appointed a committee in 1874 to
bring the matter to the attention of
th Legislature. A bill was intro
duced providing for the institution of
the holiday, but it failed.
Thk news of peace negotiations in
the Philippines, conveyed in our
telegraphic despatches of yesterday,
is an outcome generally desired by the
American people. The tenor of the
despatches is sufficient to warrant the
hope that the Philippine insurrection
is nt an end. In celebrating Dewey
Day next Monday, ina not the Amer
ican people also celebrate the down
all of Aguinaldo and his forces ? We
hope so.
THEitB is a soldier out in the
Philippines, and he hails from Kan
sas, who has written home to the
following effect : "I do not pretend
to say whether our government
Bhould keep the Philippines or not ;
I do not think it would pay me to do
it, but let men appointed for that
purpose decide the question. If they
do, I am going not to shirk my duty
in holding them against the world."
Say what you like, that is the spirit
that makes the American soldier the
peer of any other on the face of the
earth.
The indications are that the Bell
Telephone Company will not long
maintain a monopoly of the business
in this section of the state. A nuiu
ber of capitalists, headed by ex-Sen
ator Kline, of Luzerne county, are
interested in an independent tele
phone system that will include the
entire anthracite belt of counties,
with the junction point at McAdoo.
This will Include at least one of the
chartered companies in Schuylkill
county. Judge Savidge, of Sunbury,
and Alvan Markle, tlie Luzerne coal
operator, are financially interested in
the independent companies.

everything before it. Over 30 houses

By tho terms of tholr enlistments they
wero entitled to withdraw from tho

tarily, performing moro than was re
quired of thorn, which was moro than
the ordinary duty of a soldier.
It is expected that today thoro will
bo furthor negotiations with the in
surgent representatives. Whllo tho
hope Is expressed that our commission
will not hold out terms so severe as to
lead to a renewal of the fighting, or
the withdrawal of the Insurgents to
nnother stronghold further north, It
Is realized that Otis must exercise caro
to make sure that the robelB do not
take advantage of the opportunities
afforded by a suspension of hostili
ties to secure whatever of benefit to
themselves may come from the rapid
ly approaching rainy season.
General Otis dispatch was telegraphed
to the president, then at Philadelphia,
who sent the following cablegram to
General Otis: "Your message an

HOW TO FIND OUT.
Fill a bottle or common glasss with your
water and let it stand twenty-four hours.
a sediment or settling indicates an unheal
thy condition of the kidneys ; if it stains
your linen it is evidence of kidney trouble ;
too frequent desire to pass it or pain in the
back is also convincing proof thnt the kidneys
nnd bladder are out of order.
WHAT TO DO.
Theie is comfort in the knowledge so
often expressed, that Dr. Kilmer's Swamp-
Root, the great kidney remedy fulfills every
wish in curing rheumatism, pain in the back,
kidneys, liver, bladder and every part of the
urinary passages. It corrects inability to hold
water and scalding pain in passing it, or bad
effects following use of liquor, wine or beer,
and overcomes that unpleasant necessity of
being compelled to go often during the day,
and to get up many times during tlie night,
Tlie mild and the extraordinary effect of
Swamp-Root is soon realized. It stands the
highest for its wonderful cures of the most
distressing cases. If you need a medicine you
should have the best. At druggists fifty cents
or one dollar.
You may have a sample bottle and a book
that tells more about it, both sent absolutely
free by mail, if you send your address to Dr.
