Mnnlla, April . Genrl Mac Ar
thur's division fought IU way to the
Filipino trenches before CalnmpK
yesterday, ad vane Inn four miles, most
ly through woods and Jungte, and
crossing the IlaEbag river. This was
accomplished at a coat to the Amerl- i
cans or six Hilled and twenty-eignt
wounded, the First South Dakota re
giment being the heaviest loser.
After fording the river the South
Pnkotans pursued the Insurgents to
the outskirts of Calumplt, but thetown
wan found so strongly protected that
Genet-til Mar-Arthur deemed it best to
withdraw the tired fighters nnd to go
Into camp for a night's rest before
making the final assault.
The largest buildings In Calumplt
were being fired by the Filipinos while
the Americans were crossing the river
fully n mile away, Indicating tlio
enemy's Intention to abandon the place.
The insurgents seem to have adopted
n settled policy of retiring from one
position after another, nfter Inflicting
the greatest possible damage upon the
advancing army. Their forces yester
day were well drilled. Every foot of
the ground was tenaciously disputed
by thoroughly organized troops, who
tood remarkably Arm even before ar
tillery.
The enemy hnd plnnnod to wrecl:
our artillery transport train. Tho at
tempt failed, but a span of the Iron rail
way bridge over the river was destroy
ed, hampering tho American trans
portation for sorao time. Tho Filipinos
cut tho girders. Intending to have tho
stmcturo fall with the train, but it col
lapsed prematurely of Its own weight.
Tho Bagbag rlvor, which is nbout a
hundred yards wide nt that point, was
splendidly fortified, nnd the Ameri
cans were compelled to npproach
across an open spnee, from which the
rebels had cleared every obstruction
to sight. The bank of the river, a
high bluff, was surmounted with
trenches, capped with rocks, Ioopholed
and partly hidden by bushes.
General wheatons brigade ap
proached tho river along the railroad,
leavlne enmn beyond Malolos city.
General Hale's brigade, which started
on Monday, was earlier on the march,
and sweeping westward toward tho
railroad. The armored train was bo-
lng pushed by Chinamen, the Twen
tieth Kansas regiment advancing in
extended order on tho left nnd tho
irst Montana regiment, with tho
Utah light artillery, on tho right.
Tho rapid firing guns on the train
opened the battle about a mile from
the river, their popping alternating
contiguously wltn tho boom of the 6
pounders. Tho Montana regiment nnd the Utah
artillery batteries at the same timo
entered tho jungle, from which the In
surgents, who wero occupying a large,
draggling village of huts, poured
heavy volleys. In the course of an
hour tho Americans bad forced a pas
sage through tho woods to tho open
space In front of the river, and the ai
tlllery, Immediately on wheeling Into
tho open, began shelling tho Filipino
trenches.
In tho meantlmo Company IC, Twen
tieth Kansas, led by Captain Boltwood,'
performed one of the most brilliant
achievements of the campaign. Thn
regiment "was being held in reserve,
and Company K charged a distance of
a quarter of n mllo over a cornfield to
the bank of tho rlvor, near the bridge.
whero tho Insurgents from a trench
woie peppering the armored trnln, thou
nbout 200 yards down the track. The
company found Bhelter In n ditch.
C'olonol Frederick Funston called
for volunteers to cross tho river, and
tho colonel himself, Lieutenant Ball, a
private of Company K, a private of
Company E, Trumpeter Barafleld and
Corporal Ferguson, of Company I,
crawled along the iron girders.
While this was going on the men of
Company K, from the ditch, wero
fusillading tho trenches in the er
deavor to divert attention, but tho
Filipinos got tho range from a trench
down tho river, nnd their bullets soon
spattered the water under tho struc
ture. Having renched the broken span, the
small but valorous party of Americans
slid down tho caisson, swam a few
yards to the shore and crawled up the
bank, the little colonel leading tho
way to tho trenches, revolver In hand,
whllo the few remaining Filipinos
bolted.
Colonel Funston said nfterward:
"It was not much to do. We knew
they could not shoot straight, and that
our boys would attend to them while
we were crossing,"
Goneral Hale s troops, on tho right,
had tho hardest fighting. They fol
lowed the north bank of theriver, near
est the town, from tho east, with the
First Nebraska regiment on the lo(t
nnd the First South Dakota and the
Fifty-first Iowa beyond.
General Halo's right joined General
Wheaton's left soon after noon, a curve
in the rlvor enabling tho Americans to
pour an enfilading fire Into tho enemy'
trenches.
About this time tho cheers of tho
Kansas troops announced that the.
Americans had crossed tho river. Gon
eral Hales men began to ford tho
Chlco, a branch of tho Bagbag, stretch
ing to the northeast, Tho general him
self plunged in up to his neck, and the
regiments, all carrying flags, floundered
across the stream. The guns of the
Utah light artillery were dragged over
next and formed into an extended lino
to advance upon the trenches before
Calumplt, from which the Filipinos
were pouring continuous volleys.
The armored car had one man killed
and two wounded. The Kansas regl
ment had three wounded during the
charge and tho Utah light artillery had
one killed and two wounded.
It is difficult to estimate the In
surgent losses, but they had no fewer
than 70 killed, many of them by tho
artillery.

Korean advices say the emperor haa
leased three pori In eastern Korea to
a Itnaal in whallr t company. The con

length and 360 In width.
There hs been another disturbance
In Uie Korean cabinet Two ministers
were driven nut of olllce and banlsh-1
for termR of ten and twelve years, re
spectively. The incident wna due to an
Intrigue of l.ady Om, the favorite mis
treat o lie Korean emperor. She hai
m completely pntrnpped the emperor
that ho Is a puppet in her hands. Rus
sia had, by some means or other, se
cured her sympathy. .The two dis
graced ministers. It appears, did not
know this, and Imprudently rejected
the uemands of the Si. Petersburg
government In connection with whal
ing privileges for Ruswlan subjects.
The upshot of the affair was that Itus
sia appealed to Lady Om, who lectured
the emperor. The emperor listened,
burst forth Into terrible wrath and or
dered the two ministers out of the
cabinet into exile.
Though nothing remarkable appears
on the surface, a keen struggle Is be

Ilusala and Japan. It la expected that
Korea will lie practically a ItuMlan
