Tho body of "LIgo Strickland, a nogro preacher, who was Implicated In tho Cranford murder by Sam Hose, was found swing ing to tho limb of a porslmmon tree within n miio and a qunrtor of this placo yesterday, noforo death was al lowed to ond tho sufferings of the negro his ears wero cut off and tho small finger of his left hand was sev ered nt the second Joint. Thete troph ies nro in Palmetto today. On the breast of tho negro wan a piece of blood stained paper attached by an ordinary pin. On one sldo of this paper was written: "Wo must protect our la dies." The other side of the paper contained a warning to tho negroes of tho neighborhood. It road as fol lows: "Beware, all darkles; you will be treated tho same." Beforo being lynched Strickland wns given a chance to confess to tho mis deeds of which tho mob supposed him to oe guilty, nut no protested his In nocence to the Inst. Three times tho nooso was placed around his neck nnd the negro was drawn up off tho ground. Threo times he was lot down with n warning that death was in store for him should he fall to confess his com plicity in the Cranford murder. Three times Strickland proclaimed his In nocence until, weary of useless tortur ing, tho mob pulled on the rone nnd tied tho end around tho Blender trunk of tho persimmon tree. Not a shot was Ilred. Strickland was stranded to death. Tho lynching of Strickland was not accomplished without n desporato ef- lort on tho part of his emn oyer to save his life. The man who pleaded lor mm is Major W. W. Thomas, an ex-stnto senator, and ono of the most distinguished citizens of Coweta coun ty. He did all In his power to prevent the lynching of the negro. Said ho: "Gentlemen, this nesro Is Innocent. Hose said Llge had promised to give him $20 to kill Alfred Cranford. and I believe Llge has not had $20 sinco ho has been on my place. I do not ask you to liberate him. Hold him, and If tho courts adjudge him guilty, hang him." Mr. Thomas called attention to tho fact that Strickland had voluntarily told of having seen Hose on tho night of tho murder, and finally a vote wa3 taken, which resulted In a unanimous decision to let him live. With the as surance that Strickland would bo taken to Falrburn Jail the major re turned to his homo. A mile further on the lynching took place. Tho negro was a tenant on the plan tation of Major Thomas. When Sam Hose, the murderer of Alfred Cran ford nnd tho assailant of his wife. made his confession immediately prior to nis ourning, ne Implicated LIgo Strickland, Hoso contending that he had been offered money by Strickland to kill Cranford. It was known posi tively, nowever, that Hose had mado false statements in his last confession, and many of those who aided In his burning wero disposed to disregard his statement in regard to Strickland. Late Sunday night about IB men went to the plantation of Major Thom as and took Strickland from his llttlo cabin In the woods, leaving his wife and five children to wait and wcop over the fate they knew was In storo for the negro. Their cries aroused Ma jor Thomas, and that sturdy old gen tleman followed the lynchers In his buggy, nccompanled by his son, Will lam Thomas, determined to save, If possible, the life of his plantation darkey. As detailed above his efforts were futile. A ooroner's Jury held an Inquest over the body last evening nnd render ed the usual verldct death at the hands of unknown parties. Pierce js and for over thirty years has been, chief consulting physi cian at the Invalids' Hotel and Surgical Institute, of Buffalo, N. Y. Thousands of women have written to him describing their symptoms, and, on following the advice he gives freely, have become well, strong and happy. Many sensitively modest women write to Dr. Pierce nnd so ovoid the disagreeable questioning, ex aminations and local treatment so gener ally insisted upon by physicians. Dr. Pierce's medicines cure you in the pri vacy of your home, and Mrs. Heckert's case is only one of thousands that have been cured after the doctors failed. ,Dr.THEEL604HorihSWhst.
