Pennsylvania has two Senators, aftor alt. Tiik rough riders are to hold a re union in Chicago this summer. After an experience In Chicago they will be apt to think of El Civney as a mid summer picnic. The appointment of M. S. Quay to succeed himself caused a cold chill to run up the backs of the "insurgent" leaders. They await the next move with a great dealof apprehension. It must have been a proud moment for Colonel Bryan when he boarded the Raleigh and paced the same decks that Aguinaldo's feet had trod And he didn't make a speech. A correspondent of the New York Sun wants to know Colonel Bryan's means of livelihood. It's hardly a fair question, but we should say they are the same as those of any other walking delegate. The Superintendent of the Census Bureau has, it is reported, notiiled Congressman Ryan to the effect that of the number of appointments to be made in his district 40 per cent, will go to him and the other CO per cent. to the Republicans. Romney, W. Va., Times says : "Prices are acting very badly. Think of it I Sheep sold at a public sale in this county last week at $7.75 per head. If the people had any regard for the feelings of the Democratic party they would not permit prices Wtlo such naughty things. TlIEeleotion in this county next fall will be an important one, in that the people will choose most of the offi cials on the hill. The list of offices to be filled is a large one. It therefore behooves the Republicans, if they desire success, to present a united front to the enemy. Get together, gentlemen t Chairman Fow, of the bribery in vestigating committee, makes the assuring statement that the prosecu tion of the men charged with corrup tion will go on, notwithstanding the appropriation of $5,000 for that pur pose was not granted by the legisla- ture. He says the cases will be pushed to the bitter end. Archbishop Keane has asked for two years' leave of absence from Rome to return to the United States, and the Pope has granted his request. The question of Americanism being solved, Archbishop Kenne's presence at the Vatican is no longer necessary, It is stated that Mgr. O'Connell, rector of the American College in Rome, will also return to the United S'ates. One of the most remarkable trials in the annals of the criminal courts of Pennsylvania was concluded In Philadelphia, when Matthew Stanley Quay was declared not guilty of the charge of conspiracy. To the credit of all concerned in the conduct of the case, factional feeling did not creep into the trial, and the verdict was rendered in accordance with the testimony submitted. It was a trial most ably and fairly conducted in every particular. Senator Quay is certainly to be congratulated on the verdict of acquittal. Yesterday was certainly a field day for the Beaver statesmanacquitted and appointed Senator to succeed himself. The city of Toronto has had quite an interesting experience witli the Bell Telephone Company, in which they have had practical demonstra tion of the advantage of competition, having thereby secured not only cheaper service for subscribers, but also realizing a neat sum from the gross earnings. The Bell Company entered into an agreement with tho city to pay flvn per cent, of its gross earnings for the privilege of the ex clusive right of operating in Toronto for a period of live years. They paid tp the city Treasurer an average of $7,000 per year. There is a lesson in this story from Toronto for munici palities, both as to their duty to in sist on a cheaper telephone rate and to see to it Ingrantlngsuch franchises that a percentage of gross receipts Is given and the term for which such franchise is grunted is limited. If the blood fs disordered, the brain is starved, and no "dish is a feast' for the reason that the vitalizing elements do not reach the proper spot, A step in the right direction is to purify the body by the use of a natural remedy. Hood's Sarsaparilla is Nature's remedy. It acts upon tho blood, and whether the seat of tho dis order is brain, stomach, liver or kid neys, the purifying process of this medicine is equally sure and successful. It never disappoints. Diphtheria - " My little nephew was troubled for two years with sore throat and tonsllltls. Was threatened with diph theria but Hood's Sarsaparilla warded It off. He Is now entirely well." Inez G. Zlk mond threatened to kill Scott and tho latter ran at him with a pitchfork. Zlkmond drove a short dlstanco up tho nlloy. Horrowlng a small thrco pronged pitchfork, ho ran back to where Scott was working. Scott's weapon was ,t four pronged affair, and was much longer than that carried by Zlkmond. The fight lasted fully ftvb minutes, when Zlkmond struck Scott's pitchfork aside and then plunged the prongs of his own fork Into tho ne gro's breast, Scott staggered Into a nearby barn and fell to the floor. Zlk mond followed and stood over the dying man until tho latter died. Tho prongs of Zlkmond s fork entered Scott's heart. Gonornt Henry T.ntirtH Ills Successor. San Juan do Porto Rico, April 22. It does not require an expert lo detect the sufferer from kidney trouble. The hollow cheeks, the sunken eyes, the dark, puffy circles under the eyes, the sallow parsnip colored complexion indicates it. A physician would ask if you had rheuma tism, a dull pain or ache in the back or over the hips, stomach trouble, desire to urinate often, or a burning or scalding in passing it ; if after passing there is an unsatisfied feeling as if it must be at once repeated, or if the urine has a brick dust deposit or strong odor. When these symptoms are present, no time should be lost in removing the cause. Delay may lead to gravel, catarrh of the bladder, inflammation, causing stoppage, and sometimes requiring the drawing of the urine with instruments, or may run into Bright's Disease, the most dangerous stage of kidney trouble. Dr. Kilmer's Swamp-Hoot, the great dis covery of the eminent kidney and bladrtei specialist, is a positive remedy for such dis eases. Its reputation is world-wide and it is so easy to get at any drug store that no one need suffer any length of time for want of it However, if you prefer to first test its wonderful merits, mention Evening Herald and write to Dr. Kilmer &Co.. llingbatnton, N. Y., for a sample bottle and book telling all about it, both sent absolutely free by mail. Flrxt Xorth Carolina Mustered Olit Savannah, April 22. Washington, April 22. The report coming from Shanghai via London that another German war vessel has been ordered to Samoa was received with interest by officials here, though no particular importance was attached by them to tho report, the opinion be ing expressed that the German gov ernment was simply making an ad dition to its naval representation In Samoa so as to equal that of Great Britain, a step she had a right to take, because of her large commercial In terests there. From tho German point of view the dispatch of another war vessel to Samoa would be entirely con sistent with the maintenance of Ger many's prestige In the island group, where her material Interests are great er than those of other nations repre sented there. Theso, It is claimed, have been endangered by recent hap penings to the prejudice of the coun try. Such an act, a German diplomat said, could not be construed as un friendly to the interests of this gov ernment nor as a menace to existing conditions. Germany at this time has only one war vessel at Apia, while Great Britain has two and tho United States one. The suggestion was mado in German official circles somo days ago that an additional vessel might be sent to Apia. Tho report that an extra supply of ammunition would be em barked at Klao Chou Is probably a malicious Invention.
