Auckland, N. Z., April 13. Dispatch
es received hero from Apia, Samoa,
April 1, say that a party of 105 Ameri
can and British sailors wore forced to
retreat to tho beach after having being
caught In an ambush on a German
plantation that day. Tho expedition
was led. by Lieutenant Freeman, of the
British third class cruiser Tauranga.
Lieutenant Freeman and Lieutenant
P. L. Lansdale, of tho United States
cruiser Philadelphia, and Ensign J. It.
Monaghan, of the United States cruiser
Philadelphia, were left dead on the
field. Ensign Monaghan remained to
assist Lieutenant Lansdale, and was
shot In retiring. Two British and" two
American sailors were also killed.
Tho natives engaged were somo of
Mataafa's warriors. They severed tho
heads of tho British and American of
ficers killed. Priests of tho French
mission afterwards brought the heads
into Apia. ,
Tho manager of the German plan
tation has been arrested and detained
on board the Tauranga, on affidavits
declaring that ho was seen urging the
rebels to fight.
In a previous engagement 27 of Ma
taafa's warriors were killed and thera
were no casualties among the European
force.
Eight hundred of Mataafa's men
were In tho ambush, and the American
and British force amounted to 105.
The fighting was terrific, the American
and British tars repeatedly beating
back their assailants, who sought to
overwhelm them by force of numbers.
After tho rebels had been driven off
the bodies of the three officers were re
covered. Mataafa's loss was 40 killed and a
number wounded, these being carried
off the field by the rebels when they
retired. The bodies of Lansdale, Mona
ghan and Freeman, as well as thoso

ther trouble. As put by a cabinet or
fleer, the killing of the sailors has not
materially changod tho general prob
lem, though it has undoubtedly added
to the difficulty of dealing with the
specific situation. The only official
news received touching the last inci
dent was contained in Admiral Kautz'a
cablegram. The secretary said that
no additional Instructions were to be
sent by him to the admiral. The sec
retary of state, however, has been told
that he Is at liberty to forward any
Instructions to the admiral that he
may deem necessary, but that if he
concludes to do so he must act lm
mediately, as the mall steamer leaves
the nearest cable point for Apia this
afternoon.
Tho Philadelphia was shorthanded

ant Lansdale and Ensign Monaghan,
and tho department yesterday promptly
sent telegraphic orders to Mare Isl

cruit the force. Lieutenant Schoutze

The diplomatic negotiations of the
day were not directed particularly to
the encounter, as the official informa-
tlon Is too meager thus far to warrant
positive official action. There were
many Inquiries, however, and the state
department and tho British and Ger
man embassies exchanged such ad
vices as they had on the subject. In
the main the diplomatic negotiations
continued to center around the high
commission. On this subject a breach
is gradually opening between Great
Britain and Germany because of the
refusal of Great Britain to have the
commission leave San Francisco on the
19th.
The action of Great Britain In or
dering two more warships to Samoa
has attracted considerable attention
here, and It was stated that if the

Manila, April 13. General Wheaton

when shelled by tho nrtlllory and
burned and abandoned tho town of
Santa Maria, whore a thousand rebols
wore reported to have been concen

tho enemy was In full retreat towards

ally a few of the rebels dropped to the

ly with tho Idoa that this would check

the Filipinos. Hut, finding these
tactics Ineffectual, theso rebels scram
bled after the main body. General

tions put to all aro:
Do you believo the Filipinos aro ca

Do you believo the Filipinos aro ca

Do you believo tho Filipinos aro ca
pable of self government in the archi
pelago? All of thoso who have been Interro
gated, including Filipinos who sym
pathize theoretically with Independ
ence, have replied to tho third ques
tion, with remarkable unanimity. In
the negative. Independence, they say,
would result in chaos, endless tribal
wars and European Intervention. A
few of them think that provincial self
government Is practicable, but most
of them favor self government In the
townships, with a form of American
supervision protecting the inhabitants
against the peculations and extortions
which tholr experience with the Span
ish regime has led them to consider
the natural perquisites of officialdom.
Tho commercial classes urge the
sending of detachments of American
troops, each numbering about 100 men,
to take possession of the towns in the
southern provinces and in tho Vis-

of Tagalos. They declare the natives
find the Tagalo oppression worse than
Spanish oppression, and that they will
welcome the Americans. The case of
tbe inhabitants of Gubat, in the prov
ince of Sorsogon, Is cited as a typical
Instance. The Spanish taxes amounted
to $18,000, but the rebel Tagalos ex
tort $112,000 from the people of Gubat.

WftahlnftUtn, April 13. Edward Mc
Kay, of Iluena Vista, Vs.. a member of
the executive committee of the United
Mine Workers' association, and George
W. Schlenderburg, a 1'ltUburg coal op.
era tor, who employs 2.000 miners,
were the wltnensea before the Indus
trial commlaalon yesterday. Mr. Mc
Kay said the association had grown
from 16,000 members In 1S77 to 80,000
In 1999, had obtained a reduction In
hours from ten to eight and an In
crease of wages of 20 per cent. The
troubles In the Pittsburg district dur
ing the past five years, he said, could
be traced to the New York and Cleve
land Gas Coal company. They em
ployed non-union men. he said, and
did everything In their power to pre
vent union men from coming In con
tact with their employes. This com
pany he aald. was responsible for the
reduction of the wages of 45.000 men,
though It only employed 1,000.
Mr Scblenderhurg said his remem
brance of labor unions In the coal re
gions extended back 30 years. At that
time the unions were overbearing, but
of late years they had been more sat
isfactory, especially since there had
been closer relations between tbem
nnd tho mine operators. He said his
principal objection to unions was that
they were not able to enforce condi
tions In competitive districts where
the product of the mines competed
with theirs. He deprecated strikes,
which ho said were Injurious to the
operator, minor and community. Un
organized miners brought on more
trouble than union men. and since the
operators and union had been work
ing together less trouble had been
experienced. Tho miners lived better
now than they did 26 years ago. Or
ganized labor, he said, had helped to
hold wages tip and had helped to raise
tho standard of men.

ite Prscription ' in October.
I took two bottles, and on
the first of January follow
ing I gave birth to a nine-nnd-a-half
pound boy, aud
was only in labor half an
hour. There was no one
with me at the time of con
finement but my husband. I would advise
expectant mothers to take Dr. Pierce's Fa
vorite Prescription for it will shorten labor,
and give greater relief than the doctors can.
I would not say anything about the medi
cine if I bad not used it for myself. There
is no need of suffering If Dr. Pierce's Fa
vorite Prescription is used during pregnan
cy. May God bless you for a medicine that
wilt preserve life. I am getting so I can
do some of my own work without getting
tired."
