THE SUNDAY LAW.
Tho I'ennsylvanta Mlilillli Association
Issue u rnbllfl Appeal.
Wo aro in receipt of a communication from
tbo secretary of tho Pennsylvania Sabbath

changes in the present S.tbbatli law. The
W-tter follows :
Once again It becomes necessary to call to
you from tho watch-tower and warn you that
another assault is being mado upon our state
Sabbath law. John II Fow, representative
from tho seventeenth district, a resident
lawyer of tbo seventeenth ward. Philadel
phia, has introduced a bill In tho Ileuso of
Uepreseutatives calling for nine changos to
tho law which protects the laborer from op
pression and the worshipper from Interruption
and aunoysnco on the Lorl's Day. Tbo bill
is now in the hands of tho Committee on
Law and Order. Tho chairman of that com

I sent to him will go before the committee.
The chances proposed aro tho traditional
"Camei's nose" with tho boad and shoulders
in full view. They are nine in number ; all
in tbo interest of tbo lawless and disobedient
element. Its tossoeo would bo almost

all loyal and especially nil christian citizens
of the state to act immediately, as follows :
Write a short atid pointed letter to tho
membor who represents you in tbo House
and another to tho member who represents
yon iu the Scnato, urgiug them to veto
against tbo Anti-Sabbath Fow hill and use
each his earnest influcuce with his fellow
members to Induce, them to oto against it
You will all get answers to your letters.
Mark that. A member of the Homo told mo
to-day that petitions ordinal ily had but little
weight with those opposed to a moasure un
loss it caino from their own neighborhood,
but, said he, a personal letter from his con
stituents caused him to stop and think and
act carefully. Now get your pen, fellow
citizens, and write these two letters. It will
be too late whon tho law Is gone.
Pastors of tho churches and teachers or
the people, oh, for His sako who is "Lord of
the Sabbath" and who made you His am
bassadors to a lost world, writo and mail
these two letters before you sleep. A mem
ber of the Legislature said to mo to-day : 1
iave tho pulpits of my county behind mo as

every faithful pulpit has God behind It; and
that gives yon pretty strong backing." After
all, the representatives of tho people know
and respect the power of a faithful courageous
pulpit.

(lie Iilenl .Soldier of Fortune.
Most of tlio men lind simple souls.
They could rclato facts, but they said
very llttlo about what they dimly folt.
Buoky O'Neill, however, the Iron net-rod,
lroii willed lighter from Arizona, tho
sheriff whoso name was a byword of ter
ror to overy wrongdoer, white or red, tho
gambler who with unmoved faco would
stake and lose every dollar he had In tho
world ho alone among his comrades was
a visionary, an artloulate emotionalist.
Ho was very quiet about It, never talk
ing unless ho was sure of his listener, but
at night, whon wo leaned on the railing
to look at tho Southern Cross, ho was less
apt to toll tales of his hard and 6tormy
past than ho was to apeak of the mysteries
which Ho behind courage and tear and
lovo, b'eblnd animal hatred and animal
lust for tho pleasures that have tnnglblo
shnpo. Ho had keenly enjoyed life, and
he could breast Its turbulent torront as
few men could. Ho was a practical man
who know how to wrest' personal success
from adrerso forces, among money
makers, politicians and desperadoes alike
Yet down at bottom what soomed to In
terest him most was tho philosophy of llfo
Itsolf, of our understanding of It and of
tho limitations set to that understanding.
But ho was as far as possible from being
a moro dreamer of dreams. A stanchly
loyal and generous friend, he was also ex
ceedingly ambitious on his own account.
If by risking his life, no matter how great
the risk, ho could gain high military dis
tinction, he was bent on gaining It. Ho
had taken so many oliancos when death
lay on the hazard that he folt tho odds
wero now against him. But said ho,
"Who would not risk his llfo for a starf"
Had ho lived and had tho war lasted ho
would buroly have won tho eagle, If not
tho star. "Tho Kough Itlders," by Theo
