The inauguration of Governor

The Director of the Mint reports
the gold production of 1808 greater

dreams of the free silverite.
The little coterie of Populistic
Democrats and Kepublicans who
were responsible for the outcome of
the Chicago convention in 189G, seem
to have determined to run their next
national show in the same way as the
last one. So be it.
Ex-Chairman Thomas-- V. Cooper
says Quay will be re-elected, and adds
that "he will get such Democratic
votes as he may need that's what he
is after." There is no doubt about
the latter statement. Even Schuyl
kill can furnish a portion of the re
quired quota.
Gov. Hastings in his annual
message recommends the prompt
payment to schools and institutions
of the state of moneys which have
been appropriated or set aside for
that purpose. This recommendation
should receive the hearty endorse
ment of the Legislature.
The Harrisburg Commonwealth as
serts that five Democratic members of
the House have positively declared
themselves as ready to vote for Quay
for Senator in case he needed their
votes in order to secure his re-election.
And how many will find it con
venient to be absent, if necessary t
In the scuffle for the United States
Senatorship everybody, but the ever
watchful sluth-hounds, had forgotten
John Wanamaker's reward of $20,-
000 and that of Senator Quay for
$10,000 for the arrest of bribers. Some
of the shrewdest detectives in the
state were at Harrisburg trying to
get a piece of the reward.
-The Kansas legislature has taken
the question of the regulation of
telegraph and express tolls within its
borders into its own hands and prom
ises a much lower figure than those
the companies have been charging.
There has been some little doubt ex
pressed as to the ability of the people
of this Commonwealth to enact laws
which are not too highly flavored
with populism, but success in this
direction should silence all such com
ment. If this state could only bor
row the legislature of Kansas for a
few weeks some long standing griev
ances of this kind might-be remedied.
It was very proper for Bishop
Nicholas, of the Orthodox Greek
Churoh, to urge his fellow believers to
bring up their children in the faith of
their fathers. But he grossly mis
states facts when in warning them
against our public schools he says the
education given in such schools in
this country makes thotve who attend
them come out of them not only with
out the fear of God, but without the
ordinary sense of shame. Sueh a
statement is a gross libel on the public
school system of our country. In
Christian character and the traits
which go towards making honorable
and upright oitiiens th graduates of
our public schools will compare favor
ably with those from any other
schools.

DELAWARE DEADLOCK ENDED.
TlioAddlokHCniulliliito DofVnted by the
Aid of Dmnooiut lc Votes.
Dover, Del., Jan. 7. The deadlock
which had been hanging In the Dela
ware house of representatives sfnee
Tuesday was broken yesterday, after
91 ballots had been taken, by electing
Theodore F. Clark, of Delaware City,
as speaker. Benjamin P. Sheppard, of
New Castle county, was elected clerk
on the first ballot. Andrew Esham was
elected sergeant-at-arma on the fifth
ballot. Hev. Joseph Brown Turner
(Presbyterian) was elected chaplain on
the fourth ballot.
The election of Clark Is a victory for
the regular Kepublicans, the faction
oppoed to J. Kdward Addlcks, and Is
therefore assumed to mean that the
"gas man" will not don the national
senatorial toga without a most bitter
struggle. Indeed, It Is generally be
lleved by his opponents that his can
didacy has had Its run, and that a man
upon whom all can unite and who has
no tectlon entanglements will be sent
to Washington.
Clark received five votes more than
hi opponent, William Tharp, the Ad
dicks candidate, the ballot being 18 to
13. But Clark's vote would have been
slim had It not been for the support of
the Democrats, ten of the twelve of
whom gave him their votes.

TUB ADAMS P01S0N1NG,
The I'cilloo Still llmillnir Clows, But
No A frost m lis Yot.
New York, Jan. 7. The World pub
lishes the following: These new points
were developed yesterday in tho pois
oning inystory: Professor Wltthaus
found that Kutnows powder wns mixed
with the cyanide of inerrury In the
falsp bromo seltzer bottle sent to Harry
Cornish the mixture which killed Mrs.
Adams.
This Is considered most Important, as
making absolutely certain that the
sender of the poison to Cornish was
one and the snmo with the Bender of
the cyanide of mercury to Harry Cor
mnti Barnet In a Kutnows powder box,
from the effects of which the latter
died. It leads to the presumption by
the police that some of the Kutnows
powder may even have been saved out
of the box sent to Barnet to be mixed
In the stuff sent to Cornish.
The wife of Itoland B. Mollneux is
now very 111. Her condition was de
scribed ns pitiable by her sisters. Mrs.
Mollneux received knowledge during
the day that the police had found a
letter signed "With love, Blanche,"
written by Mrs. Mollneux to Mr. Bar-
net, nnd that this letter had been sub
mitted to a handwriting expert for
comparison with the writing on the
package containing the holder nnd
false bromo seltzer bottle sent to Cor
nish. She became aware, also, that In
vestigations were being made Into her
past, her acquaintance with Barnet.
and her marriage to Mollneux.
Captain McClusky announced that
the 'letter In Mrs. Mollneux's hand
writing was an ordinary missive.
More discouraging for the police than
any development thus far was the fail
ure of the Newark false beard clew.
Young Mollneux was taken to Fischer,
me wig maker who sold a red wig to
a stranger shortly before Christmas.
Fischer declared flatly that Mollneux
was not his customer. The other New
ark wig maker, Zimmerman, also failed
to identify blm.
Further than this the case Is where It
stood a few days ago. The police havH
made no arrests.

Berlin, Jan. Letters received here
from Klau-Chau, tho German fortified

Tung, China, give details of an outrage
upon Father Stenz, the German Cath

missionary was about to leave Tle-Tau,
province of Shan Tung, owing to the
anti-Christian feeling. Finding himself
confronted by crowds of Chinese who
were clamoring for the destruction of
the Christians he took refuge in a
hut. He was dragged out, his clothes
were torn from his back, he was struck
with sticks and pricked with knives
and lances and his beard torn out. The
Chinese threatened to flay him alive.
On the following day his persecutors
prepared to hang him by the wrists.

behalf, but compelled him to leave the
district, with a promise never "to re

of the day the patient was delirious,

.What Shall We Do.
A serious and dangerous disease prevails
in this country, dangerous because so decep
tive. It comes on so slowly yet surely that it
is often firmly seated before we are aware of it.
The name of this disease which may be
divided into three distinct stages is, First,
Kidney trouble, indicated by pain in the back,
rheumatism, lumbago, frequent desire to
urinate often with a burning sensation, the
flow of urine being copious or scant with
strong odor.
If allowed to advance, this reaches the
Second stage, or Bladder trouble, with heavy
pain in the abdomen low down between the
uavel and the water passage, increasing de
sire to urinate, with scalding sensation in
passing, small quantities being passed witli
difficulty, sometimes necessary to draw it
witli instruments. If uric acid or gravel has
formed, it will prove, dangerous if neglected.
The Third stape is Bright's Disease.
There is comfort in knowing that Dr.
Kilmer, the great kidney and bladder
specialist, has discovered a Remedy famous
for its marvelous cures of the most distressing
cases aud known as Dr. Kilmer's Swamp
Root. It is sold by all druggists.
As a proof of the wonderful virtues of this
great discovery, Swamp-Root, a sample bottle

Washington, Jan. 6. The Judiciary
committee had the right of way, in the
house for three hours yesterday and
quite a number of bills of minor im

were passed. The remainder of the day
was occupied In continuing tlte consid

of Alaska. Some 21 pages were dispos

the 232 pages. A section in the bill,
copied from the statutes of Oregon,
providing punishment by fine and im
prisonment of persons who prevent or
endeavor to prevent employes from
working, aroused a protracted debate,
on the ground that It was an attack on
organized labor. It was finally stricken
out.
Little business except of a routine
character was transacted by the senate.

IN SENATEAND HOUSE.
A VlHory For tho Opponents of tho
Civil Sorvlfe Law.
V "lilnrrtnti. Jan. 7. The antl-clvll
service reformers scored a victory In
the house yesterday. The legislative,
executive nnd Judicial appropriation
bill wns taken up for consideration and
when tho appropriation for the civil
service commission was reached Mr.
Evans, Kentucky Republican, made a
motion to strike It out. This motion
has been made annually for a dozen
years or more, but hnS Invariably fail
ed. But yesterday the opp.mentB of
the law laid great stress on tho fact
that they could not get a direct vote
upon tho proposition, and were, there
fore, compelled to seek Its nullification
In this manner. Even these appeals
failed to bring out tho full strength
of the opposition, though the motion to
strike out carried by a narrow ma
jority 67 to 61. Tills was In committee
of the whole, where no record Is made
of the vote. Mr. Moody, of Massa
chusetts, gave notice that he would
demand a record vote In the house,
where the friends of the civil service
law expect to reverse the decision.
Immediately after the senate pon
vened yesterdny the resolution offered
Thursday by Mr. Hoar calling on the
president for Information as to the In
structions of the commissioners who
negotiated the treaty of Paris, to
gether with all correspondence and re
ports relating to the work, was laid
before the senate. Chairman Davis,
one of the commissioners, desired that
It be referred to the foreign relations
committee, but Mr. Hoar Insisted that
the senate had ns much right to such
information as the members of the for
eign relations committee, and that the
president should determine whether
the senate should have It. The resolu
tion was adopted In secret session. In
support of the resolution offered some
time ago by Mr. Vest In opposition to
expansion Mr. Caffrey delivered an ex
tensive speech.
