Washington, Dec. 27. Senator Frye
talked to a reporter today with respect
to the conditions attending and result
ing from the peace negotiations. With
respect to the frequently repeated
statement in press dispatches that the
sentiment of the powers, with the ex
ception of Kngland, was opposed to the
united States, and looked with disfavor
upon the attitude of this government
In dealing with Spain, Senator. Frye
said:
"I saw no evidence of such sentiment
existing outside of France, and in
France that sentiment appeared to be
confined to the press, which does not
reflect the sentiment of the nation nor
of the people generally."
Do you think there will be an early
restoration of cordial relations between
Spain and the United States?"
"I think that very soon after the rati
fication of the peace treaty and the
restoration of diplomatic relations thera
wilt be no dlfllculty about negotiating
commercial treaties and a treaty for
the release of prisoners, and such other
matters directed toward the perfect
restoration of friendly relations be
tween the two governments. I do not
believe that the Spanish government
will be at all disposed to keep up un
friendly feeling between the two gov
ernments."
'What has been published with re
spect to the treaty of peace seems to
Indicate, does It not, that this govern
ment Is not committed by these nego
tiations with respect to the future dis
position of the territory the Spanish
sovereignty over which has been re
linquished?"
'It Indicates very strongly that this
government Is not committed In any
way whatever with respect to the dls
position and government of these Isl
ands. If we are Insane enough to do
so we might give them all back to
Spain after the ratification of the
treaty. If we were fools we might
divide them up among the other for
elgn powers. The whole matter Is left
)n the hands of congress. Congress can
make any disposition of the Islands
it sees fit, The ratification of the
treaty will not In any way curtail our
privileges in this direction,

New York, Dec. 27. The question of
HUpremncy between human and ma
chine uaccmaklng for bicycle racers
has yet to be determined, Last night,
at Madison Square Garden, the Ameri
can Cycling KuchiR association held
one of Its tournaments, where amateurs
nnd professionals struggled hard for
honors, and the night's program was
to have been wound up with a 20 mile
race between II. D. Elkes, the world's
hour champion, of Glens Falls, N. Y
paced by regular pacemakers, and Jay
Eaton and Teddy Goodman, paced by
the French machine.
Oscar Hedstrom won the half mile
professional scratch race handily by
two lengths, with Caldwell and
Kreamer separated by half a wheel
for second honors.
F. L. Kramer, of East Orange, N. J.,
won the half mile race for amateurs
by a liberal margin, and during the
final heat he always held his com
petitors safely.
Kreamer, of Chlcaco, wrested the
professional laurels from Hedstrom In
the one mile race, defeating the
Urooklynlte In the final heat bv a
length and a half, after a very pretty
contest In the last lap,
The tussle between human pacemak
ers and the petroleum motor cycle, '
which was the event of the night, be
gan shortly after 11 o'clock. Fournler,
the French expert, made more than a
dozen laps of the track to get his ma
chine up to racing pace before the
pistol cracked for the start, and then
Jay Eaton Jumped In ehlnd the "loco
motive," which was on the pole, while
Elkes got In behind his tandem and
soon took a commanding lead. In the
first lap Elkes passed the machine, and
up to the end of the first mile gained
constantly. In the second mile the
human pacemakers gained a very de
cided advantage and had a lap to their
credit when the two mile mark was
passed. During the third mile the
driving strap on the motor cycle snap
ped with a loud crack, and Fournler
had to pull up. Then Eaton, who saw
that the task of overtaking Elkes un
paced was hopeless, got behind the lat
ter and Elkes slowed down a bit. All
Interest In the race was lost, as Elkes,
had a lap to the good and there was no
chance of hl3 opponents catching him.
Eaton was chosen to ride the first ten
miles behind the motor, and after the
break he finished his ten miles behind
Elkes, Then Teddy Goodman tackled
separate pacemakers, Goodman soon
found his pacers too slow, and tacked
on behind the Glens Falls rider, who
was flying around the track. At the
end of the 18th mile Elkes had a lead of
one mile, but he did not relinquish h
rast pace, wniie uopuman was taken up
by several fresh tandems. In the last
lap of the Uth mile Elkes rode ahead
of his pacemakers, and finished the dls
tanc In 41 minutes, 41 2-5 seconds, with
Goodman almost a mile behind.
Jimmy Michael's time for this dis
tance over the same track was 40 min
utes, 39 seconds.
Harry Gjbson. of Cincinnati, a lad of
JU, rode an exhibition half mile paced
by a tandem in 59 4-B seconds. This
performance stamps the young Ohluttn
a crackajack, (p tha time made beats
flint of Tom Cooper over the same
track by one-fifth of a second.,
The final of the one mile amateur
handicap was a rattling good race, and
tfchrleber won by half a wheel from
O. M, KrtB after uu fxciting struggle.
Unth writ xtartcd from scratch, but
Schrleber always showed In front, and
not a few of the spectators thought
that Frank, whom the lu'lsea p'seed
third, had beaten rlrtz uy a narrow
margin for seepnd placg.

When a man's head aches it is because
the tissues of the brain do not receive
sufficient nourishment from the blood, orre
ceive impure and unhealthy nourishment.
When a man gets nervous and sleepless, it
means that the blood is not properly nour
ishing the nerves. When his skin breaks
out with blotches and pimples and erup
tions, it means that the skin it being fed
upon the impurities of the blood. Almost
every known disease is primarily due to
improper nourishment through the blood,
which is the life -stream. Dr. Pierce's
Golden Medical Discovery is the (rreatest
of all blood-maljero and purifiers. It gives
edge to the appetite, corrects all disorders
of the digestion, makes the assimilation of
the life-giving elements of the food per
fect, invigorates the liver, promotes secre
tion and excretion, and vitalizes the whole
body. It makes firm, rauncular flesh, but
does not make corpulent people more cor
pulent It cures 98 per cent, of all cases
of lingering coughs, bronchial, throat and
kindred affections, which, if neglected,
lead up to consumption. It is the best of
all nerve tonics and restoratives. Kept by
all medicine dealers.
